Book excerpt: L'Imagerie par Résonance Magnétique Nucléaire (IRM) est devenue un remarquable outil de diagnostic médical. En effet, elle offre intrinsèquement un contraste élevé entre les différents tissus, une orientation de coupe arbitraire et une innocuité biologique. Cependant l'acquisition de l'image par cette technique est encore lente (quelques minutes/coupe). Ceci implique un coût élevé de l'examen, l'inconfort du patient et la sensibilité aux mouvements.Un type de méthodes rapides, dit d'équilibre dynamique, consiste à exciter rapidement et périodiquement" l'aimantation. Ceci permet de réduire considérablement le temps d'acquisition en créant un signal d'équilibre permanent. Mais, le contraste d'image obtenu dans ce cas est complexe et difficile à interpréter avec les règles conventionnelles. De plus, des artefacts peuvent apparaître dans l'image.Une étude du régime d'équilibre dynamique en IRM a été réalisée à l'aide d'un simulateur d'IRM numérique dans le but de clarifier l'origine des artefacts et le mécanisme du contraste tissulaire. L'étude montre que l'on peut contrôler ce régime de manière à éliminer les artéfacts et à modifier le contraste de l'image.Quatre séquences conçues à partir de ce principe sont présentées, analysées et comparées. Ces séquences sont expérimentées sur un appareil à 0.1 Tesla (IEF d'Orsay). Elles permettent de produire des images 2D en quelques secondes et des images 3D en quelques minutes. Les types de contrastes d'image obtenus indiquent l'intérêt diagnostic de ces méthodes.
