Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid-state dc switching devices were studied as part of an investigation of solid state circuit techniques. In the study, two devices were used as a switch: a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) and a trinistor controlled rectifier with gate turn-off. The first part of this report covers the investigation of circuits and methods to accomplish turn-off of the SCR. The SCR can be turned on by a signal on the gate; however, additional circuitry is necessary to turn it off. The best results were obtained by using a circuit that connects a charged capacitor across the SCR, backbiasing it until it recovers its ability to block foward voltage. The last part of this report deals with the investigation of the trinistor controlled rectifier with gate turnoff used as a static switch. Tests were conducted to determine the device voltage drop, minimum gate voltage and current to fire, minimum gate voltage and current to turn off, and effect of overloading the device. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ternary combinational switching networks consisting of elements which are similar to familiar binary switching elements are studied by means of a ternary switching albegra. Simplification procedures using map methods are presented. Static and dynamic hazards, and methods to eliminate them, are investigated. It is found that some ternary switching functions have unavoidable dynamic hazards. However, the class of ternary switching functions for which all hazards can be eliminated is larger than the class of corresponding functions in the binary case. The hazard elimination method presented is based on the use of maps. (Author).

The purpose of this contract was to improve the producibility and reliability of the present 2.75-inch rocket launcher intervalometer through the improvement of manufacturing methods and techniques brought about by: a Conversion of all timing functions to solid state circuits; b. Conversion of all switching functions to solid state circuits, c. Provision for the sensing and bypassing of any open or shorted squibs; d. Pilot production of five prototype solid state switches to verify the techniques chosen, and e. Design of an assembly line capable of producing 1000 switches per week. The contract has been concluded with all above tasks successfully accomplished. In addition, a reliability analysis of the solid state circuitry was conducted, an EMI analysis was made, and some EMI testing was done. A detailed investigation into the conversion of the electronic circuitry to one hybrid circuit chip was performed. All of these activities are documented in the report. (Author).
