Book Blind Equalization and System Identification

Download or read book Blind Equalization and System Identification written by Chong-Yung Chi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-20 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absence of training signals from many kinds of transmission necessitates the widespread use of blind equalization and system identification. There have been many algorithms developed for these purposes, working with one- or two-dimensional signals and with single-input single-output or multiple-input multiple-output, real or complex systems. It is now time for a unified treatment of this subject, pointing out the common characteristics of these algorithms as well as learning from their different perspectives. "Blind Equalization and System Identification" provides such a unified treatment presenting theory, performance analysis, simulation, implementation and applications. This is a textbook for graduate courses in discrete-time random processes, statistical signal processing, and blind equalization and system identification. It contains material which will also interest researchers and engineers working in digital communications, source separation, speech processing, and other, similar applications.

Download or read book Chaos Applications in Telecommunications written by Peter Stavroulakis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-10-31 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of transmitting information from one chaotic system to another derives from the observation of the synchronization of two chaotic systems. Having developed two chaotic systems that can be synchronized, scientists can modulate on one phase signal the information to be transmitted, and subtract (demodulate) the information from the corres

Book Blind Adaptive Channel Equalization Algorithms for QAM Signals Based on the Constant Modulus Algorithm

Download or read book Blind Adaptive Channel Equalization Algorithms for QAM Signals Based on the Constant Modulus Algorithm written by Antoinette Michele Beasley and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of a blind adaptive equalizer in digital communications is to compensate for the effects of intersymbol interference (ISI) without knowledge of the channel or the intended signal. Instead, only the statistics of the signal constellation are used. The constant modulus algorithm (CMA) is the most popular blind adaptive equalization algorithm used today because of its relative simplicity and effectiveness in equalizing constant-modulus signals. Although CMA does offer some equalization of non-constant modulus signals, such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), it can suffer from slower convergence and higher residual ISI when considering such two-dimensional signal constellations. In this dissertation, the well-known constant-modulus algorithm (CMA) and its shortcomings when applied to QAM signals are discussed and illustrated. Then some algorithms designed to improve the performance of CMA are discussed, specifically the alphabet-matched algorithm (AMA) and the multimodulus algorithm (MMA). The use of algorithms such as AMA and MMA is intended to make a CMA-based blind adaptive equalization algorithm better suited for the equalization of QAM signals, as they, unlike CMA, consider both the amplitude and the phase of the equalizer output. Using AMA, a combined CMA+AMA cost function technique and a block decision feedback equalization (DFE) scheme are proposed, which allow for compensation of a number of the shortcomings of CMA only equalization and improve equalizer performance while adding only minimal complexity. The improvements in equalizer performance are shown through performance evaluation via simulation. It will be shown that the proposed algorithms provide faster, and sometimes more accurate, convergence, reduces residual ISI and/or increases final accuracy. -- Abstract.

Book Generalization of Widely Linear Filtering Concepts for Equalization and Interference Suppression in PAM QAM Systems

Download or read book Generalization of Widely Linear Filtering Concepts for Equalization and Interference Suppression in PAM QAM Systems written by Kiran Kumar Kuchi and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In PAM/QAM transmission systems, standard minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear (LE) or decision feedback equalization (DFE) methods are often used to suppress the detrimental effects inter-symbol and/or co-channel interference (ISI/CCI) effects of the channel. The main aim of this thesis is to show the benefits of widely linear (WL) filtering for equalization applications in wireless systems. For this purpose, we introduced generalized widely linear MMSE/MMSE-DFE equalization structures for both PAM systems that use real constellations and QAM (that use complex modulation alphabets) with multiple antennas and multiple co-channel interferers. In the proposed implementation, the WL receiver, unlike conventional methods, first separates the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) parts of the complex baseband received signal and jointly filters the two branches for signal detection. We derived the filter settings for both infinite and finite length implementation and analyzed the receiver performance in various channel conditions. This thesis has three main contributions. First, we analyze the advantage of WL filtering for PAM signaling in a white noise channel. When the ISI channel response is complex, we show that WL LE/DFE receivers outperform conventional methods both in complexity and performance. We obtained closed form mean square error (MSE) expressions that clarified the MSE advantage, and lower noise enhancement properties of WL receivers. Second, we show that WL receivers outperform conventional receivers in the presence of PAM-type interference. For both PAM and QAM signaling, assuming that the WL-DFE feedback path is error free, we show that, a receiver with N antennas can reject up to 2N - 1 PAM interferers or any combination of M1 PAM and M 2 QAM interferers satisfying the constraint: M 1 + 2M2
