Download or read book Technical Results from the Gipsy Moth Parasite Laboratory Vol 4 written by Harry S. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Results From the Gipsy Moth Parasite Laboratory, Vol. 4: The Chalcidoid Genus Perilampus and Its Relations to the Problem of Parasite Introduction It was less than three-tenths of a millimeter in length, and therefore almost invisible to the unaided eye, oblong - ovate in shape and dark brown in color. Examination under the microscope showed it to be a highly organized being with well-defined mouth parts, strong, curved mandibles, conspicuous tracheal system, etc. The 13 segments were well differentiated, the first forming a distinct head, which was armed with several recurved books. The dorsal segments consisted of a series of heavy, chitinous, and overlapping plates, which nearly encir cled the body. Most of these were furnished with one or two pairs of bristles. Ventrally the larva was furnished with several backward projecting spines, which were evidently ambulatorial in function. An attempt to rear the adult from this larva was unsuccessful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Importation Into the United States of the Parasites of the Gipsy Moth and the Brown-Tail Moth: A Report of Progress, With Some Consideration of Previous and Concurrent Efforts of This Kind The joint authorship of the bulletin is deemed desirable by both authors, but the writer takes it upon himself to sign this introduction for the explicit purpose of stating in his own way the conditions under which it has been prepared. The work from the beginning has been under the direct supervision of the writer, and he is therefore to be held responsible for any failures in the speedy accomplishment of results, but the greatest credit in bringing about the results which have been accomplished, he wishes frankly to state, belongs to Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects

Download or read book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects written by Mike Lehane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.

Book Biological Control Measures of Success

Download or read book Biological Control Measures of Success written by G. Gurr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as examining successful biological control programmes this book analyses why the majority of attempts fail. Off-target and other negative effects of biological control are also dealt with. Chapters contributed by leading international researchers and practitioners in all areas of biological control afford the book a breadth of coverage and depth of analysis not possible with a single author volume. Combined with the use of other experts to review chapters and editorial oversight to ensure thematic integrity of the volume, this book provides the most authoritative analysis of biological control published. Key aspects addressed include how success may be measured, how successful biological control has been to date and how may it be made more successful in the future. With extensive use of contemporary examples, photographs, figures and tables this book will be invaluable to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as being a `must' for all involved in making biological control successful.

Download or read book Parasitoids written by H. Charles J. Godfray and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasitoids lay their eggs on or in the bodies of other species of insect, and the parasitoid larvae develop by feeding on the host, causing its eventual death. Known for a long time to applied biologists for their importance in regulating the population densities of economic pests, parasitoids have recently proven to be valuable tools in testing many aspects of evolutionary theory. This book synthesizes the work of both schools of parasitoid biology and asks how a consideration of evolutionary biology can help us understand the behavior, ecology, and diversity of the approximately one to two million species of parasitoid found on earth. After a general introduction to parasitoid natural history and taxonomy, the first part of the book treats the different components of the reproductive strategy of parasitoids: searching for a host, host selection, clutch size, and the sex ratio. Subsequent chapters discuss pathogens and non-Mendelian genetic elements that affect sexual reproduction; evolutionary aspects of the physiological interactions between parasitoid and host; mating strategies; life history theory and community ecology. A special effort is made to discuss the theoretical background to the subject, but without the use of mathematics.

Kingsland chronicles the careers of key figures and the field's theoretical, empirical, and institutional development, with special attention to tensions between the descriptive studies of field biologists and later mathematical models. This second edition includes a new afterword that brings the book up to date, with special attention to the rise of "the new natural history" and debates about ecology's future as a large-scale scientific enterprise.
