Many NATO countries operate fixed wing aircraft from ships. Additionally, the use of ships as helicopter platforms is extensive in the NATO community and brings another import dimension to the aircraft/ship interface issue. Thus, it seemed that both fixed and rotary wing aviation deserved equal billing in the Aircraft/Ship Interface Symposium which is the subject of this Technical Evaluation Report. This Symposium was held in Seville, Spain, from 20th to 23rd May 1991 and was the first Symposium sponsored by the AGARD Flight Mechanics Panel devoted to this topic. The Symposium contained twenty-five presentations grouped under the following topics: Keynote Addresses; Ship Environment; Guidance, Controls, and Displays; Flight Test and Simulation Techniques; Launch, Recovery, and Handling Systems Development; and Operational Views and Future Developments. The full texts of the papers presented at this Symposium are published in AGARD-CP-509. Book excerpt: In May 1989 the Flight Mechanics Panel of AGARD organised Symposium on Flight in Adverse Environmental Conditions (the Conference Proceedings of this Symposium are published as AGARD CP 470) Four aspects of adverse environmental conditions of interest to the flight mechanics specialists were addressed by this symposium: atmospheric disturbances, reduced visibility, icing and electromagnetic disturbances. All four of these can seriously affect flight safety, comfort and operational capability. This topic was and still is considered to be particularly relevant to the needs of military community which is putting increased emphasis on the ability of today's and tomorrow's aircraft to fly safely and effectively in the types of adverse conditions dealt with in this symposium.

Book excerpt: This report evaluates the AGARD Flight Mechanics Panel Symposium on 'The Use of Computers as a Design Tool (held from 3-6 September 1979 at Neubiberg, Germany. The primary conclusions were that the human being still plays a critical role during all steps of computerized aircraft design and that remarkable progress has been made in many areas related to aircraft design because of recent developments in computer hardware and software. However, there are still areas where the designer has to rely on wind tunnel and structural testing. The computer has reduced the routine work-load of the engineer to save time for creative work. But there is still a need for faster and larger computers that will probably incorporate new architectures. Recommendations are made for future activities by AGARD. The full papers of the Proceedings are published as AGARD Conference Proceedings No. 280. This Advisory Report was prepared at the request of the Flight Mechanics Panel of AGARD. (Author).
