Book Irrigation in the Mediterranean

Download or read book Irrigation in the Mediterranean written by François Molle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean irrigation is diverse due to, among other factors, the relative importance of water in the economy of each country, varied levels of aridity, heterogeneous levels economic, social and technological levels of development, and differences in political and social organization. However, most of the Mediterranean countries face similar problems to meet their water demands because of the scarcity and variability of renewable resources, growing water requirements from non-agricultural sectors, increasing environmental concerns related to water quality and environmental degradation, a social demand for larger public participation, and important technological changes. The time has come to reconsider the “not one drop lost to the sea” philosophy of yesteryears largely and to 'live within limits'. This book focuses on eight selected countries (Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Israel and Egypt) and provides a comparative perspective that both thoroughly explores their specificities and identifies the common challenges faced by the irrigation sector in these countries. The book has been written at a critical moment, when the continued application of a supply-side water management model is revealing its unsustainable nature in numerous places; when significant technological changes are taking place in the irrigation sector; when new forms of management and governance are widely held as badly needed; and finally, when climate change is compounding many of the difficulties that have characterized irrigation policies and practices in the past decades. This complicated future context makes Mediterranean irrigation face various political dilemmas on water management, raising social tensions, triggering territorial and land conflicts, and stimulating new technological developments. This book provides a timely analysis of the particular trajectory of eight Mediterranean countries in these uncertain transformations, and attempts to identify the best strategies to avert or overcome future risks.

Book Irrigation Development and Public Water Policy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Irrigation Development and Public Water Policy Classic Reprint written by Roy E. Huffman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation Development and Public Water Policy This is a study of the economic and social considerations that are part and parcel of irrigation development and public water policy. No longer can an irrigation project be considered solely in terms of the engineering problems it raises. Indeed, its success depends equally upon economic feasibility and social use. Although the federal government has carried on organized activity in this field for more than fifty years, no comprehensive coverage of the problems in irrigation development has been attempted since 1927, when Ray P. Teele published his notable work on the economics of land reclamation. New concepts, new approaches and procedures, have been applied and ever more attention is being paid to the socioeconomic implications. Admittedly, the problems of irrigated agriculture and its place in public water policy are complicated and controversial; nevertheless, a full, up-to-date survey seems necessary to assess the accomplishments of the past twenty-five years. Book excerpt: Since unification, Italy has grown from a backward agrarian society into one of the world's leading industrial powers. Yet her history exhibits spectacular disunities, inconsistencies and paradoxes. Dominated by political Catholicism, she has also been home to Fascism, the mafia, and the largest Communist movement outside the Eastern Bloc. Her politics are notoriously fissiparous - yet policy itself never changes. Until now. This timely, absorbing and richly illustrated account of the historical development of the Italian nation-state traces the main paradoxes of what `Italy' has been, and questions what she may become.
