Book excerpt: Coronada y el toro (Coronada and the Bull) is a play written in 1974 by Francisco Morales Nieva (1924–2016), a prominent figure in the history of Spanish theatre. Even though the aesthetic quality of his drama competed with that of his contemporaries, with many of whom he interacted (Ionesco, Genet, Brecht, Grotowski, et al.), Nieva’s recognition was unduly delayed within Spain and, on the international scene, his name remains eclipsed by playwrights such as Federico García Lorca and Antonio Buero Vallejo. Traditionalist and populist yet cosmopolitan and neo-avant-garde, Nieva began writing plays in the late 1940s but never got the chance to perform any on the commercial stage until 1976, a few months after the death of General Francisco Franco, whose censorship machine forced his work underground. Hard to subject to any single classification, Nieva’s theatre is as complex as it is innovative in its combination of resources from a wide range of artistic trends, from the género chico to the Baroque to postmodernism. Coronada y el toro is a sophisticated masterpiece, rich in intertextuality, humour, and suspense.

Book excerpt: Since the latter part of the 1960's the pedagogic philosophy of Paulo Freire and the theatrical techniques of Augusto Boal have been reflected in the theatre first in Brazil, then in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and other countries. This study traces the emergence of the collaborative popular theatre movement in Latin America, as the teatro de concientización espoused by Freire and Boal revolutionized the content and structure of the Latin American performance text. Few attempts have been made to define this dramatic form and to accord it the recognition it so well deserves, since it speaks to the specific concerns of regional target audiences. The present analysis offers new insights into the evolution of collaborative popular theatre as an artistic form and, perhaps even more importantly, it addresses its sociopolitical implications. The uniqueness of this dramatic form is its ability to unite a populace in the task of codifying reality into symbols that can generate critical consciousness, empowering the spectator-participant to alter his relationship to nature and social forces and to fulfill his historical «vocation» of becoming part of many transforming agents of social reality in his community. The text includes the artistic contributions of groups such as Libre Teatro Libre, Teatro Experimental de Cali, Teatro La Fragua, and the dramatic movements of the Chilean Teatro Poblacional and the Nicaraguan Teatro Comunitario, among others.

Book excerpt: This is the first critical, in-depth study of the anarchist movement in Cuba in the three decades after the republic’s independence from Spain in 1898. Kirwin Shaffer shows that anarchists played a significant—until now little-known—role among Cuban leftists in shaping issues of health, education, immigration, the environment, and working-class internationalism. They also criticized the state of racial politics, cultural practices, and the conditions of children and women on the island. In the chaotic new country, members of the anarchist movement reinterpreted the War for Independence and the revolutionary ideas of patriot José Martí, embarking on a nationwide debate with the larger Cuban establishment about what it meant to be “Cuban.” To counter the dominant culture, the anarchists created their own initiatives—schools, health institutes, vegetarian restaurants, theater and fiction writing groups, and occasional calls for nudism—and as a result they challenged both the existing elite and the occupying U.S. military forces. Shaffer also focuses on what anarchists did to prepare the masses for a social revolution. While many of the Cuban anarchists' ideals flowed from Europe, their programs, criticisms, and literature reflected the specifics of Cuban reality and appealed to Cuba’s popular classes. Using theories of working-class internationalism, countercultures, popular culture, and social movements, Shaffer analyzes archival records, pamphlets, newspapers, and novels, showing how the anarchist movement in republican Cuba helped shape the country’s early leftist revolutionary agenda. Shaffer’s portrait of the conflict between anarchists and their enemies illuminates the multiple forces that pervaded life on the island in the twentieth century, until the rise of the Gerardo Machado dictatorship in the 1920s. This important book places anarchism in its rightful historical role as a vital current within Cuban radical political culture.
