Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does an extended family, bound by shared history, affection, and duty but divided by generation, gender, status, and personality, memorialize its dead? This fascinating study shows how members of the prominent Yu family passed down their personal and familial memories over five generations, through the traumatic transition from imperial to modern China and amidst the radical change and destruction of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Their memory writing is unusual and compelling for its quantity, variety, and resonance of themes across generations. It reflects a particular cultural moment and family, yet offers insight into universal practices of writing and remembrance. Ink and Tears begins and ends with the Yu family’s two most famous members: the late Qing writer Yu Yue and his great-great grandson Yu Pingbo, each among the most famous and prolific scholars of their respective generations. Over a span of one and a half centuries, they and their lesser-known female and male kin made use of an impressive diversity of genres—poetry, prefaces, biographies, diaries, correspondence, and strange tales—to preserve their family’s memories. During the times in which they wrote, the technologies of printing and the institutions of publication and book distribution were being transformed, and by the time of the great-grandchildren the language of education and governance, definitions of scholarship and literature, and the map of literary genres had all been remade. The Yus’ memory writing thus reveals not just how different family members remembered and mourned, but the changing tools they had with which to convey their loss. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, Rania Huntington focuses on questions of how memory was crafted, preserved, and transmitted as much as on what was remembered, tracing common tropes and shared strategies. Her beautifully observed study will interest scholars of late imperial and early Republican literature and history, as well as readers more broadly concerned with the family, women’s writing, themes of memory and bereavement, and the personal functions of literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A masterpiece” (The Guardian) from the Nobel Prize–winning writer, an oral history of children’s experiences in World War II across Russia NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST For more than three decades, Svetlana Alexievich has been the memory and conscience of the twentieth century. When the Swedish Academy awarded her the Nobel Prize, it cited her for inventing “a new kind of literary genre,” describing her work as “a history of emotions . . . a history of the soul.” Bringing together dozens of voices in her distinctive style, Last Witnesses is Alexievich’s collection of the memories of those who were children during World War II. They had sometimes been soldiers as well as witnesses, and their generation grew up with the trauma of the war deeply embedded—a trauma that would change the course of the Russian nation. Collectively, this symphony of children’s stories, filled with the everyday details of life in combat, reveals an altogether unprecedented view of the war. Alexievich gives voice to those whose memories have been lost in the official narratives, uncovering a powerful, hidden history from the personal and private experiences of individuals. Translated by the renowned Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, Last Witnesses is a powerful and poignant account of the central conflict of the twentieth century, a kaleidoscopic portrait of the human side of war. Praise for Last Witnesses “There is a special sort of clear-eyed humility to [Alexievich’s] reporting.”—The Guardian “A bracing reminder of the enduring power of the written word to testify to pain like no other medium. . . . Children survive, they grow up, and they do not forget. They are the first and last witnesses.”—The New Republic “A profound triumph.”—The Big Issue “[Alexievich] excavates and briefly gives prominence to demolished lives and eradicated communities. . . . It is impossible not to turn the page, impossible not to wonder whom we next might meet, impossible not to think differently about children caught in conflict.”—The Washington Post

It is a roller coaster ride of reaching the ecstasy with love and then experiencing the fall; only to rise again. It is a book that paints some vivid images of the various stages that we experience in our journey of finding love. It depicts the times when we paint the world red and it also portrays the dark nights we experience in the absence of love. It shows how love can take us to heaven and the next moment condemn us to hell. It reveals the scars adorned by a loving soul and the ever-lasting imprint every kiss leaves on it, which is not any less lethal than a wound. This book is a journey from the young innocent adolescent love to the one which needs no physical proximity to be identified as love! It shows how love and pain change us and evolve us into a completely new person. It marks the metamorphosis that this beautiful rendezvous with love brings in us. The Semicolon promotes mental health and reinforces that it is totally okay to break down at some point or the other, to be vulnerable, to be fragile, as that is what makes us human! While doing so, it showcases the beautiful pictures we can paint with the pain we have experienced and proves that it doesn’t have to be something negative! It is important to feel the pain and hurt to create something beautiful. The worst days end up bringing out the best in us…! The Semicolon in its essence, is a way to convey that the story isn’t over yet!

Book Gladiator

Download or read book Gladiator written by Dan Clark and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggressive, explosive, and boasting awesome athletic ability, Dan Clark rose to tremendous fame as Nitro on American Gladiators. He quickly emerged as the most popular cast member and became a reality television superstar. But a twenty-year affair with steroids led to a life of pissing blood, smuggling drugs, destroying hotel rooms, getting arrested, growing breasts, and lying bloodied in the street after a vicious fight with his best friend. This is Clark’s riveting, fiercely candid account of his life, career, and steroid addiction. From an upbringing defined by tragedy and a difficult search for identity to tales of performing center stage at Madison Square Garden and bedding Playboy Bunnies and porn stars, Clark explores the price of fame, the pressure of stardom, and how the whole steroid-fueled fantasy finally imploded. What began in high school as a way to speed up recovery from injury rapidly turned into an all-consuming addiction. With self-deprecating humor and a trove of incredible stories, Clark provides an eye-opening report on the dangers of steroids both obvious and hidden—and offers his thoughts on why steroid use remains a persistent problem today. More than just a pulpy exposé, Gladiator is a triumphant story of self-discovery and redemption. “Clark played the character ‘Nitro’ on television series American Gladiators, and if you only read one book on vacation this year, this has to be it.”—Chuck Palahniuk, Author of Fight Club “Dan Clark possesses the emotional honesty, humility, and depth together with the innate literary talent and stylistic sensibility to execute this memoir with stunning eloquence and power. His lean, muscular prose never wavers off course as it leads us through his unspeakable loss, overwhelming success, and ultimately into a kind of acceptance and redemption...”—Augusten Burroughs, Running with Scissors “Enormously smart, brave-hearted, extremely personal. Filled with practical advice you can use right away. This book will help thousands of people.”—Myles Knapp, Contra Costa Times “Aspirational. Transformed. Edgy. Self-effacing. Larger than life.”—Mike A. Snyder, MD, Author of The Full Diet
