Book excerpt: In the beginning, before Man and the insect Thranx became allies, in the days when the reptilian AAnn were just occasional raiders of the Thranx colony worlds, one young Thranx agricultural expert lived a life of quiet desperation. A dreamer in a world of sensible well adjusted socialised beings, Ryo buried himself in his work of reclaiming marshland until... Until he met the Aliens. Grotesque two legged creatures, unpleasingly soft skinned, gross in their appetites, alarming in their movements, all in all pretty revolting species, yet his curiosity overcame his queasiness and he befriended them. And discovered they were called Man.

Book The Topography of Tears

Download or read book The Topography of Tears written by and published by Bellevue Literary Press. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When you first view Rose-Lynn Fisher’s photographs, you might think you’re looking down at the world from an airplane, at dunes, skyscrapers or shorelines. In fact, you’re looking at her tears. . . . [There’s] poetry in the idea that our emotional terrain bears visual resemblance to the physical world; that our tears can look like the vistas we see out an airplane window. Fisher’s images are the only remaining trace of these places, which exist during a moment of intense feeling—and then vanish.” —NPR “[A] delicate, intimate book. . . . In The Topography of Tears photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher shows us a place where language strains to express grief, longing, pride, frustration, joy, the confrontation with something beautiful, the confrontation with an onion.” —Boston Globe Does a tear shed while chopping onions look different from a tear of happiness? In this powerful collection of images, an award-winning photographer trains her optical microscope and camera on her own tears and those of men, women, and children, released in moments of grief, pain, gratitude, and joy, and captured upon glass slides. These duotone photographs reveal the beauty of recurring patterns in nature and present evocative, crystalline imagery for contemplation. Underscored by poetic captions, they translate the mysterious act of crying into an atlas mapping the structure and magnificence of our interior lives. Rose-Lynn Fisher is an artist and author of the International Photography Award-winning studies Bee and The Topography of Tears. Her photographs are exhibited in galleries, festivals, and museums across the world and have been featured by the Dr. Oz Show, NPR, Smithsonian, Harper’s, New Yorker, Time, Wired, Reader’s Digest, Discover, Brain Pickings, and elsewhere. She received her BFA from Otis Art Institute and lives in Los Angeles.

Book The Crying Book

Download or read book The Crying Book written by Heather Christle and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bestselling "lyrical, moving book: part essay, part memoir, part surprising cultural study" is an examination of why we cry, how we cry, and what it means to cry from a woman on the cusp of motherhood confronting her own depression (The New York Times Book Review). Heather Christle has just lost a dear friend to suicide and now must reckon with her own depression and the birth of her first child. As she faces her grief and impending parenthood, she decides to research the act of crying: what it is and why people do it, even if they rarely talk about it. Along the way, she discovers an artist who designed a frozen–tear–shooting gun and a moth that feeds on the tears of other animals. She researches tear–collecting devices (lachrymatories) and explores the role white women’s tears play in racist violence. Honest, intelligent, rapturous, and surprising, Christle’s investigations look through a mosaic of science, history, and her own lived experience to find new ways of understanding life, loss, and mental illness. The Crying Book is a deeply personal tribute to the fascinating strangeness of tears and the unexpected resilience of joy.

Book excerpt: A first-contact novel written from an alien perspective by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek Into Darkness. Ryo is one of the Thranx, a race of social arthropods. From his larval years to now, his life has been normal, though his love of learning and insatiable curiosity set him apart. He has settled into his work as an agriculture specialist and is premated to a lovely female. Yet Ryo still feels something is missing from his life, and when he heroically defends his colony from the Thranx’s reptilian nemesis, Ryo gets a taste of excitement that’s hard to forget. Then his premate shares a garbled message from her starship-captain cousin—one that hints at the discovery of a completely new, completely alien space-going intelligence. Even when the captain backtracks and denounces the experience as a deep-space nightmare, Ryo can’t let it go. He becomes obsessed, leaving his colony and family behind to chase rumors of a murderous alien race, horrible beyond imagining. And when he finally makes it to an isolated military outpost rumored to harbor the captured aliens, he comes face-to-face with . . . humanity. Praise for Alan Dean Foster “One of the most consistently inventive and fertile writers of science-fiction and fantasy.” —The Times (London) “Alan Dean Foster is a master of creating alien worlds.” —SFRevu.com “Foster knows how to spin a yarn.” —Starlog “Alan Dean Foster is the modern day Renaissance writer, as his abilities seem to have no genre boundaries.” —Bookbrowser

Download or read book The Crystal Tear Series written by Stephan Erasmus and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crystal Series formed part of an exhibition in 2013, entitled 'Reconstruction' at the NIROX Project Space, Johannesburg, South Africa. This particular series of works originated from my artistic practice where I sample a body of text, that carries with it emotional triggers generally understood and felt by the broader public and the transformation of the text through encryption into a visual format. The body of text was sourced from a song by Delerium, entitled 'Innocence', released in 2000. The lyrics of the song takes the listener through the singers' discovery of and the anticipation of the lonely journey through the ending of a deeply felt relationship. In the song, the singer uses the 'crystal tears' as a metaphor expressing her sorrow at the sudden realization that she has not noticed her lovers slow and systematic withdrawal from their relationship. This combined with the realization that ' It's marching through my door now, The stoney cold of lonesome' gives way to her expression of surprise and anticipation of sorrow. The sampled text that announces the poetic arrival of the sorrowful crystal tears in the person experiencing the breakup. Using this as a starting point in the creation of this work, each crystal was constructed from the letters that make up the word in the sampled text. The construction process altered the letters through the use of a verity of fonts and the construction/encryption systems to form crystals. The font and construction systems were purposefully used to hide and obscure the text, transforming the text into a form which synthesizes the crystal structures. The crystals as part of the series were placed in the same order as it would be read in the sentence structure. Through the transformation of the sampled text into the Crystal Series, these images represent the shed tears of a lover at the end of a relationship.

Book The Glass Tears Poem Journal

Download or read book The Glass Tears Poem Journal written by Randal S. Doaty and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ray of sunlight came through a pane in the glass studio workshop. The scrap glass bucket was nearly full. On top of this heap was a hardened drip of glass that had carelessly fallen from a glass artists punti. Glimmering in the sunlight that morning was the very first Glass Teardrop. It may have remained just scrap until the simple words glass tears softly whispered in the imagination of a would-be poet. Two totally different art forms were about to be married. The story of Glass Tears is purely serendipitous. The need for a unique and meaningful sympathy gift happened at just about the same time as the glass teardrop appeared at the studio. The poem, Glass Tears came to Randal S. Doaty as unexpectedly as the teardrop itself. He had never written a poem before, but he felt the need to give his new teardrop a voice. The Glass Tears Poem Journal is a collection of what many different Glass Tears have spoken through the voice of this poet.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Edited by Irene Gammel and Suzanne Zelazo. Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) was an American modernist of German-Jewish heritage living in New York. She was a painter, designer, and poet. Together with her sisters Ettie and Carrie, Stettheimer hosted a legendary salon on the Upper West Side, where they entertained the likes of Marcel Duchamp, Carl Van Vechten, Henri McBride, and Georgia O'Keeffe. In 1934 Stettheimer designed the set and costumes for Gertrude Stein's opera Four Saints in Three Acts to much acclaim. In 1949, Ettie collected Florine's poems in CRYSTAL FLOWERS, a privately printed, elegant edition of 250. In addition to these rare poems, this new volume offers formerly unpublished material culled from archives, including three new poems and Stettheimer's libretto for her ballet "Orph e of the Quat-z-arts." Gammel and Zelazo have re-situated this overlooked poet among her modernist sisters, presenting her as an important practitioner of a modernism that integrates multiple art forms. Sixty years after it first appeared for a select few, her poetry shines for a new generation of readers ready to appreciate her irreverent camp aesthetic and her exuberant painterly style.
