Book excerpt: All previous tearing instability analyses for circumferentially cracked pipes require the use of a limit-load assumption. In this paper a more general approach is developed for power law hardening materials. Specifically, a simple J and (?J/?a)?T estimation scheme for a circumferentially cracked pipe subjected to four-point bending is developed using a power hardening law for the plastic part of deformation. The predictions of crack initiation and tearing instability are compared with experimental data. Comparisons with tearing instability predictions using the limit-load approach are also provided.
