What kind of rope is best for each roping event? Since ranch cowboys have been team roping forever, why has it just become so popular? What makes a good roping horse? Frank Dobie once said, ?Facts are stubborn things. but they do make a good read!

Book excerpt: Virgin Spring is the story of Nic Nichols, a rebellious teenager from the Midwest who has long had dreams of becoming a rodeo cowboy. A year before he is eligible for military service in World War II, he gets a lucky break: his parents send him to Arizona in a last-ditch effort to encourage him to finish high school. There, his passion is broncos rather than books, and his penchant for trouble continues to plague him as he tangles with rustlers, wrangling, and rodeos. But it is his friendship with an old vaquero and his romance with a young Apache woman that transform Nic into a man. Through the legend of Virgin Spring, he discovers the timelessness of love. This poignant tale evokes both the history and magic of the Southwest. "In G. N. Buffington's engaging and strongly written Virgin Spring, Nic turns into a cowboy before our eyes " -Richard Bradford, Author of the Classic, Red Sky at Morning "An engaging novel that captures the spirit of a time and place over which World War II casts its long shadow. Highly recommended." -Marc Simmons, Southwest Historian and Author of Ranchers, Ramblers, and Renegades and Others

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1884, Malie Monroe Jackson began and named a canal Buckeye in honor of his native state, Ohio, the Buckeye state. In 1886, Thomas Newton Clanton added 10 miles to the canal. The following year, he applied for a post office, and on March 10, 1888, the post office, named Buckeye, was established. Clanton platted a townsite and named the town Sidney, though why he chose that name remains a mystery. Beginning in 1910, advances in transportation put the community on the map, and Sidney became Buckeye. Hugh Watson, founder of the Buckeye Valley Bank, became the town's first mayor in 1929. On January 1, 2014, Buckeye became the newest city in Arizona. This newest volume also celebrates today's Buckeye settlers, such as Levi Beard, Tony Youngker, Clemie Arnold, and Bob Doster, DVM, updating Buckeye's colorful history of notable residents.

Book Cook Like a Tie Down Roper

Download or read book Cook Like a Tie Down Roper written by Jody Westbrook Bergman and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people journal or keep diaries, but Jody has recorded menus for fifty years and remembers those whom she has served with great joy! Reviewing those menus, the author shares stories of guests; some funny, some poignant, some sad, and all uplifting. Sharing some of the menus, and a few recipes, she uses metaphors related to ranch life and rodeo stories. Stories include the night of a sliding chicken, the dreadful moment that she showed up without The Family Favorite and the day that the Methodists, Baptists and an Atheist appeared at her door with comfort food and other treats. Included are family favorite recipes and how they came to be, plus cooking tips and planning ideas which are woven into each chapter. An entire chapter on planning and table setting ideas gives permission for things to be imperfect, yet still wonderful and even memorable. As one reader said, “Reading these stories makes me want to invite myself to your house, eat a pimento cheese sandwich and hear more stories.”

Book excerpt: Miles circled the date on the calendar for the bull riding benefit that he had agreed to participate in with a sigh. He had already been wondering how long he could continue to make a living riding green-broke horses five days a week and rodeoing weekends, but it was all he knew. He did take heart that he had been able to stash back quite a bit of money lately with a good clientele wanting their horses broke, plus hed been on a winning streak at the rodeos, but, he knew, that could change in a minute. Miles Deroin starts out with one goal for the summer, and that is winning amateur rodeos calf roping championship. He has the talent, the want, and the horse that can get him there, but luck is another matter. Luck, however, can be what you make it, and Miles has always had a knack for making the best of whatever comes his way. But as Miles rodeo season unfolds he finds it a trip peppered with almost as many slumps as there are wins. And, making matters worse, after bumping into an old acquaintance, he comes to discover there is a bit more on the line than just winning a gold buckle. Living a simple life doesnt necessarily mean life is going to be simple. Just ask Miles Deroin.
