Book The Opposite of Loneliness

Download or read book The Opposite of Loneliness written by Marina Keegan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instant New York Times bestseller and publishing phenomenon: Marina Keegan’s posthumous collection of award-winning essays and stories “sparkles with talent, humanity, and youth” (O, The Oprah Magazine). Marina Keegan’s star was on the rise when she graduated magna cum laude from Yale in May 2012. She had a play that was to be produced at the New York Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at The New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash. Marina left behind a rich, deeply expansive trove of writing that, like her title essay, captures the hope, uncertainty, and possibility of her generation. Her short story “Cold Pastoral” was published on NewYorker.com. Her essay “Even Artichokes Have Doubts” was excerpted in the Financial Times, and her book was the focus of a Nicholas Kristof column in The New York Times. Millions of her contemporaries have responded to her work on social media. As Marina wrote: “We can still do anything. We can change our minds. We can start over…We’re so young. We can’t, we MUST not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it’s all we have.” The Opposite of Loneliness is an unforgettable collection of Marina’s essays and stories that articulates the universal struggle all of us face as we figure out what we aspire to be and how we can harness our talents to impact the world. “How do you mourn the loss of a fiery talent that was barely a tendril before it was snuffed out? Answer: Read this book. A clear-eyed observer of human nature, Keegan could take a clever idea...and make it something beautiful” (People).

Book Group Rings and Class Groups

Download or read book Group Rings and Class Groups written by K.W. Roggenkamp and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of the book centers around the isomorphism problem for finite groups; i.e. which properties of the finite group G can be determined by the integral group ring ZZG ? The authors have tried to present the results more or less selfcontained and in as much generality as possible concerning the ring of coefficients. In the first section, the class sum correspondence and some related results are derived. This part is the proof of the subgroup rigidity theorem (Scott - Roggenkamp; Weiss) which says that a finite subgroup of the p-adic integral group ring of a finite p-group is conjugate to a subgroup of the finite group. A counterexample to the conjecture of Zassenhaus that group basis are rationally conjugate, is presented in the semilocal situation (Scott - Roggenkamp). To this end, an extended version of Clifford theory for p-adic integral group rings is presented. Moreover, several examples are given to demonstrate the complexity of the isomorphism problem. The second part of the book is concerned with various aspects of the structure of rings of integers as Galois modules. It begins with a brief overview of major results in the area; thereafter the majority of the text focuses on the use of the theory of Hopf algebras. It begins with a thorough and detailed treatment of the required foundational material and concludes with new and interesting applications to cyclotomic theory and to elliptic curves with complex multiplication. Examples are used throughout both for motivation, and also to illustrate new ideas.

Book excerpt: Run No More is the story of Avery Lockhart, a gifted young girl who has been on the run for her entire life. Her uncle Finn has spent the last eight years raising her after her mother was killed by the same man they are still running from. Avery's mother, Luna, was recruited at the age of fifteen by an agency that operates under the guise of training young people with certain gifts so they are able to function normally in society. The real goal of the agency, however, is much more sinister. The story begins as Avery is about to turn fifteen, the age that her gift comes into full power. She and Finn have just moved to a new town and are trying to stay under the radar. It seems, though, that they have fallen right into the agency's backyard. Avery meets another young girl who also possesses gifts and watches in horror as she is kidnapped by one of the agents right before her eyes. The discovery that Finn's new romantic interest is involved leaves them both terrified. Desperate to stop running, Avery and Finn develop a plan to rescue Avery's friend and take down the agency. As they execute their plan, things go horribly wrong. Will they make it out alive, or will they be another statistic of the agency?

Book The Divisor Class Group of a Krull Domain

Download or read book The Divisor Class Group of a Krull Domain written by Robert M. Fossum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two main purposes for the wntmg of this monograph on factorial rings and the associated theory of the divisor class group of a Krull domain. One is to collect the material which has been published on the subject since Samuel's treatises from the early 1960's. Another is to present some of Claborn's work on Dedekind domains. Since I am not an historian, I tread on thin ice when discussing these matters, but some historical comments are warranted in introducing this material. Krull's work on finite discrete principal orders originating in the early 1930's has had a great influence on ring theory in the suc ceeding decades. Mori, Nagata and others worked on the problems Krull suggested. But it seems to me that the theory becomes most useful after the notion of the divisor class group has been made func torial, and then related to other functorial concepts, for example, the Picard group. Thus, in treating the group of divisors and the divisor class group, I have tried to explain and exploit the functorial properties of these groups. Perhaps the most striking example of the exploitation of this notion is seen in the works of I. Danilov which appeared in 1968 and 1970.

Book The Mapping Class Group from the Viewpoint of Measure Equivalence Theory

Download or read book The Mapping Class Group from the Viewpoint of Measure Equivalence Theory written by Yoshikata Kida and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author obtains some classification result for the mapping class groups of compact orientable surfaces in terms of measure equivalence. In particular, the mapping class groups of different closed surfaces cannot be measure equivalent. Moreover, the author gives various examples of discrete groups which are not measure equivalent to the mapping class groups. In the course of the proof, the author investigates amenability in a measurable sense for the actions of the mapping class group on the boundary at infinity of the curve complex and on the Thurston boundary and, using this investigation, proves that the mapping class group of a compact orientable surface is exact.
