Ethnic Liason Officer Working Party No. 2 and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study assessing the welfare of immigrant and refugee youth in Australia is reported on in this document, which is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 summarizes findings and presents recommendations for government action and policy; overall, it was found that the personal, social, educational, and employment needs of the teenage immigrant population are not presently being acknowledged or met. Chapter 2 describes the background of the Ethnic Liaison Officer Working Party No.2, the government-appointed body that prepared the report. Chapter 3 reviews Australian literature on schooling and the adolescent immigrant. The review points to a need for research on the English language, education, and training needs of immigrants and refugees who arrive in Australia as young adults. Chapter 4 provides an overview of educational choices available to the immigrant student, including English as a Second Language and bilingual education programs. Chapter 5 assesses the educational needs of immigrants who are beyond the age of compulsory schooling. Problems of unemployment and acculturation are given special focus. The appendices list the Working Party's terms of reference and membership, and outline the information needs identified by the Working Party. (KH)

Book The Migrant Presence

Download or read book The Migrant Presence written by Jean I. Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work in Australian sociology examines the way in which Australian institutions have responded to the influx of migrants of non-Anglo-Saxon origin. Until the end of the sixties, the typical Australian reaction was that these migrants could be, and were being, assimilated into the mainstream of British-Australian society and culture. At the end of the sixties, both the assimilationist philosophy and the claim of successful and effortless absorption came into question, and migrants of non-English speaking background began to be defined as problems. Now, in a third phase, migrants themselves are rejecting the notion that they are, above all, problems or people with problems. Instead they are asserting their rights and dignity as legitimate minorities in an ethnically plural society. The author goes on to trace in detail the response of the institutions of education, health, and the trade unions to 'the migrant presence'. 'Well written, well presented, well documented and challenging.' - C. A. Price, The National Times 'Well written, sympathetic to the point of anger and should be included in any course on Australian society or public policy. an invaluable contribution.' - James Jupp, Politics

Book Linguistic Minorities Policies and Pluralism

Download or read book Linguistic Minorities Policies and Pluralism written by John Edwards and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistic Minorities, Policies and Pluralism examines the position of some linguistic minority groups, including policies that affect them. This book provides a useful perspective on group relations, emphasizing the aims, purposes, and values held by the societies in which linguistic minority groups exist. The structure of society and perceptions of pluralism and assimilation are also described. This text demonstrates that there is not a simple opposition between pluralism and assimilation, there are difficulties with educational programs intended to support minority group language and identity, minority views are not themselves homogeneous, and advocates of cultural pluralism often hold over-simplified and unrealistic ideas. This publication is a good reference for students and researchers conducting work on pluralism, assimilation, language maintenance/shift, and ethnolinguistic identity.

Book Languages other than English in Australian Higher Education

Download or read book Languages other than English in Australian Higher Education written by Jennifer Joan Baldwin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book researches the study of languages other than English, and their place in the Australian tertiary sector. Languages are discussed in the context of the histories of Australian universities, and the series of reports and surveys about languages across the second half of the twentieth century. It demonstrates how changes in the ethnic mix of society are reflected in language offerings, and how policies on languages have changed as a result of societal influences. Also discussed is the extent to which influencing factors changed over time depending on social, cultural, political and economic contexts, and the extent to which governments prioritised the promotion and funding of languages because of their perceived contribution to the national interest. The book will give readers an understanding as to whether languages have mattered to Australia in a national and international sense and how Australia’s attention to languages has been reflected in its identity and its sense of place in the world.
