Book Social Justice through Multilingual Education

Download or read book Social Justice through Multilingual Education written by Tove Skutnabb-Kangas and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principles for enabling children to become fully proficient multilinguals through schooling are well known. Even so, most indigenous/tribal, minority and marginalised children are not provided with appropriate mother-tongue-based multilingual education (MLE) that would enable them to succeed in school and society. In this book experts from around the world ask why this is, and show how it can be done. The book discusses general principles and challenges in depth and presents case studies from Canada and the USA, northern Europe, Peru, Africa, India, Nepal and elsewhere in Asia. Analysis by leading scholars in the field shows the importance of building on local experience. Sharing local solutions globally can lead to better theory, and to action for more social justice and equality through education.

Book New Methodological Approaches to Foreign Language Teaching

Download or read book New Methodological Approaches to Foreign Language Teaching written by Thomas H. Schmidt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how the traditional academic disciplines of linguistics, translation, literature and cultural studies can contribute to, or be integrated into, the teaching of a foreign language by means of innovative methodologies, techniques and instruments. The book begins with a selection of essays on applied linguistics that share some significant findings in the context of second or foreign language acquisition. It then examines the ways in which linguistics, translation theory, literature and cultural studies are brought into the foreign language classroom not just as objects of study but also as vehicles for language-learning. By presenting studies on four main foreign languages, English, Spanish, French and German, the collection offers, to the foreign language profession, an opportunity for the sharing and comparison of strategies across languages at both the secondary and higher education level. The text is a valuable resource for language teachers with a more philologically-oriented background who would like to learn how to apply their research knowledge and experience to the design and implementation of new methodological approaches.

The contributions by leading scholars and practitioners are structured to give a survey of the topic, highlight its importance, and provide a critical stance. The languages under the scope of this handbook are identified by the contributors as immigrant languages, indigenous, endangered, heritage, regional, minority, majority, and marginalized, as well as foreign and second languages, all of which are discussed in relation to early language education as the key concept of the handbook. Book Revitalising Indigenous Languages

Download or read book Revitalising Indigenous Languages written by Marja-Liisa Olthuis and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2013-01-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book tells the story of the Indigenous Aanaar Saami language (around 350 speakers) and cultural revitalisation in Finland. It offers a new language revitalisation method that can be used with Indigenous and minority languages, especially in cases where the native language has been lost among people of a working age. The book gives practical examples as well as a theoretical frame of reference for how to plan, organise and implement an intensive language programme for adults who already have professional training. It is the first time that a process of revitalisation of a very small language has been systematically described from the beginning; it is a small-scale success story. The book finishes with self-reflection and cautious recommendations for Indigenous peoples and minorities who want to revive or revitalise their languages.

Book World Yearbook of Education 1981

Download or read book World Yearbook of Education 1981 written by Jacquetta Megarry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. The phrase 'education of minorities' raises a variety of questions. As a World Yearbook theme it demands clarification. We are using the word 'minority' to refer not to relative numbers but to 'the condition of being inferior or subordinate'. This could be taken to include students with a variety of handicaps - physical, intellectual, socioeconomic, cultural; pupils with low literacy or language problems; and victims of race or sex discrimination. However, this book concentrates on the problems of students who are disadvantaged by differences of culture and language, especially ethnic minorities who do not possess the background, attributes and skills of the dominant group and are thus distanced from the sources of power and status in the country they inhabit.
