Book Teachers Perceptions on the Use of Background Music in Classrooms

Download or read book Teachers Perceptions on the Use of Background Music in Classrooms written by Grainne Sheehan and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The benefits of background music use have long been studied. The results in general education settings have been equivocal but the benefits for students with special education needs cannot be denied. According to research, background music can have a positive effect on students with learning disabilities, students with ADHD, students with emotional disturbance, and also students with autism. In a general education classroom, music can be used to improve mood and result in an increase in academic achievement. The purpose of this research was to determine the extent to which background music is being used in general education classrooms while also discovering why teachers use background music. Many teachers are using music in their classrooms with the benefits, as described by the teachers, being increased task attendance, better focus, and happier, more positive environments. However, most teachers are not aware of the research involving music so it can be assumed that their use of background music is primarily because of the positive effects that they perceive. More importantly, teachers indicated that they would be willing to increase their background music use if lists were compiled for them for different beneficial effects. In the future, background music could be used as a tool to benefit all students in an inclusive classroom.

Book Effects of Background Music on Student Productivity in the Elementary Classroom

Download or read book Effects of Background Music on Student Productivity in the Elementary Classroom written by Maria Hargrove and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of music on student achievement have been widely researched, but implementing rigorous programs can be expensive. Since schools are often operating on tight budgets, music programs may not be realistic additions, making low-cost options such as playing background music appealing. The purpose of this study is to answer the question: To what extent does background music affect student productivity in the elementary classroom? The researcher looked at the effects of live music and recorded music since all prior research looks at recorded background music only. Prior research found that background music has some effect on student productivity, but the field of research is still relatively unexplored. To add to the existing field of research, this convergent parallel mixed-methods study was conducted on 21 first-grade students from one classroom to examine how background music affected student productivity. Quantitative data was collected through student surveys and qualitative data was collected through coded observations of student behavior. Through the use of comparative analysis, common themes emerged and the results were compared to the current body of research. Results found that background music may help student productivity and that live music is marginally more successful at decreasing distractive behaviors, such as talking and touching, in comparison to recorded music. Key findings found that when students preferred a type of music, instances of off-task behavior decreased. This suggests that student productivity may increase when students are allowed to choose the music played in the background. Since student preference appears to have an effect, it is recommended that students be given headphones or earplugs when teachers play background music so they can either choose the music they like or work in relative silence. The study concluded that background music has at least a limited positive effect on student productivity. While it is compelling to think something as simple as background music may help student success, it is important to keep in mind that other factors may play a larger role. For example, teacher expertise or access to outside resources may have a greater effect on student success. Although further research is needed, it is exciting to know that background music appears to affect student productivity because it is something almost any teacher can do.

Book PERCEPTIONS OF MUSIC EDUCATION AS A COMPONENT OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Download or read book PERCEPTIONS OF MUSIC EDUCATION AS A COMPONENT OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS written by Gary Michael Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this study was to understand public school educators' perceptions of music education. This mixed methods study utilized a survey, interviews, and artifacts to interpret to what extent teachers and principals value music education as a contributing component of the academic program. The researcher aimed to comprehend how educators perceive music when compared to other academic subjects, how underlying factors and experiences contribute to perceptions of music education, and how perceptions align between teachers and principals. The data gathered for this study drew upon practicing educators from Pennsylvania public schools who serve in primary and middle years schools. 135 participants responded to a survey distributed via email, and 10 of the respondents were selected for follow up interviews. The findings of the study indicated that classroom teachers and principals generally perceive music to be less important that other academic subjects. The findings of the study also indicated that an educator's background in music and exposure to music have an impact on their perceptions of music education, although the level of impact varies depending on the specific type of musical undertaking. The findings of the study also showed that the perceptions of the importance of music education aligned between teachers and principals: teachers and principals agreed that music was a vital component to the academic curriculum. Lastly, the findings of the study indicated that educators in K-8 schools generally value music education more than educators in K-5 schools.

Book Can Music Help Special Education Students Control Negative Behavior in the Classroom

This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music therapy has been researched and found to have a calming relaxing effect on students who fear large crowds, especially in classrooms. Music therapy has been proven to have a calming effect on those students who display signs of distress, or who have been diagnosed with psychological or physiological disorders. Some students show stress when taking tests. Research has proven that music significantly reduces stressful behaviors in these students. Background music has proven to have a positive effect on students who are assigned to inclusion classes. Music has been used as an effective intervention for maintaining and improving active involvement, social, emotional and cognitive skills. Music therapy has had positive effects on these students who deal with psychological stressors or physiological complications. Thus, it has been researched and proven that students who receive music therapy over a long period of time have a success rate that is higher than those students who receive music therapy over a shorter period. Long-term music therapy indicates that music sessions were most effective in increasing self-control, relaxation and comfort levels inside the classroom, allowing more time for teaching.

Book The Effects of Background Music in the First Grade Classroom

Download or read book The Effects of Background Music in the First Grade Classroom written by Nishida Sergent and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative action research study investigated the experiences of incorporating different genres of music into the classroom environment during math and journal writing. The three genres of music implemented into the classroom were classical, jazz, and Disney. Eighteen first graders participated in this study conducted at a high-achieving elementary school. Throughout the study, the researcher maintained an organized field log, while conducting and analyzing observations, student work, surveys, and interviews. These data were gathered and compared to show which genre of music produced the best work habits and classroom behaviors. Findings suggest that when any genre of music is incorporated into the classroom, positive peer interactions increase. These interactions created a learning-enriched environment. Analysis revealed that with jazz music, students exhibited diligent work habits. However, classical and Disney music produced more off-task behaviors. Overall, with the implementation of background music, students produced detailed journal writing and achieved proficient scores on math tests.
