This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how the participants perceived their principal's transformational and transactional leadership style and whether differences existed in their perceptions based on the demographic variables of age, gender, experience, educational attainment and ethnicity. Transformational leaders were considered influential, change agents who motivated teachers to work collaboratively as a team to achieve defined goals. On the other hand, transactional leaders developed impersonal relationships and motivated teachers according to their personal self-interest. They focused on social and economic exchanges, using contingent rewards to reinforce positive behaviors and administered punishment to reform negative behaviors. One hundred and thirteen participants from six elementary schools participated in this study. The Multi-Leadership Questionnaire was used to collect data. Cronbach alpha was used to establish internal reliability consistency of the instrument. The data were analyzed using mean scores, percentages, chi-square, t-test and ANOVA. The research findings indicated that perception scores at both school levels were higher for transformational leadership than transactional leadership. According to the mean score interpretation (Table 2) and the participants' mean scores, 92.9 % of participants perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and 7.1% of participants perceived their principal as frequently a transformational leader. Ironically, 100% of participants perceived their principal as sometimes a transactional leader. The research findings further indicated that overall, teachers at both levels perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and sometimes a transactional leader. Based on the demographic findings, an ANOVA revealed statistically significant differences in teachers' perceptions of their principal's transformational leadership style based on years of experience. Participants with more years of experience perceived their principal with significantly higher mean scores than those with fewer years of experience. Recommendations include: (a) conducting further research to determine the impact that principals' leadership style have on student performance from a national perspective, (b) conducting a Longitudinal Research study to determine the impact that leadership styles have on student performance, and (c) exploring leadership styles extensively to identify the leadership traits exhibited by both public and private elementary school principals.

An explanatory cross-sectional survey design with a concurrent mixed approach using both primary and secondary data was employed. A total of 202 teachers provided evidence on their heads of school’s attributes in influencing students’ academic performance using questionnaires, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The collected data was analysed using SPSS version 23 for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. A significant relationship between integrity and the students’ academic performance was revealed. However, inspirational attributes negatively correlated between students’ academic performance. In addition, the results reveal that there was weak, positive and significant relationship between competency and academic performance. The study concluded that integrity and competency attributes significantly influence the students’ academic performance, while inspiration negatively influences students’ academic performance. Therefore, the study recommends the government to allocate enough funds to the professional development of the aspirant and to review the educational policy on the training and development of teachers before and after their appointment into a leadership position.

This study investigates whether the principal’s leadership styles influence student achievement in rural secondary schools in Nigeria. Firstly, the study determines the overall type of leadership style adopted by upper and lower rural secondary schools in Nigeria. Secondly, it establishes the principal leadership style behavior in both upper and lower secondary schools. Book Transformational Leadership and Academic Performance in Montessori Schools

Download or read book Transformational Leadership and Academic Performance in Montessori Schools written by Folasade Gbekeloluwa Ololade and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the effect on leaners' academic performance of a specific transformational leadership style adopted by Montessori school principals. The literature on principals in South Africa deals mostly with the leadership style of principals of government schools; there is limited research on the effect of the transformational leadership style of Montessori school principals on learneraÌ22́Ơ4́Øs academic performance. The relevance of this study is not limited to geographical boundaries, as Montessori schools are a growing international phenomenon and the role of the leadership style of a principal in the development process of the quality and outcomes of education cannot be over-estimated. Quantitative data was collected through the use of questionnaires administered to selected school teachers, using a simple random probability sampling technique. This quantitative research tested hypotheses and estimated the significance of the problem statement and research questions. The theoretical framework of this study is based on the mediated-effect model (Hallinger & Heck, 1998). This theory addresses the research question of the effect of the leadership style practiced by Montessori school principals on learnersaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø performance, their school environment and learning process. The mediated effect model explains relationships by comparing two variables, the independent and dependent variables. The independent variable is leadership styles while the dependent variable is learnersaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø academic performance. This study aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on the transformational leadership style of Montessori school principals. The findings will also serve as tools of analysis for future researchers and policy makers through which a Montessori transformational approach can be appropriately used to achieve useful learner outcomes.

Book Principals Leadership Styles Effect on Teacher Collaboration

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of this writing, little research had been done regarding principals’ leadership styles and its effect on teachers’ collaboration in a Professional Learning Community (PLC). I completed a quantitative study in which I surveyed 66 teachers in a large school district in the southeast region of the United States about their principal’s leadership styles and their collaboration in PLCs at their schools. I found teacher collaboration in a PLC positively correlated with each component of the transformational leadership style. Similarly, I found there was one positive correlation and one negative correlation between teacher collaboration and the components of the transactional leadership style. Additionally, I found there were two negative correlations between teacher collaboration and the components of the passive-avoidant leadership style. I also found all components of the transformational leadership style were predictors for teacher collaboration while only one component of the transactional leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Similarly, only one component of the passive-avoidant leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Finally, I found the transformational leadership style could predict shared and supportive leadership, supportive conditions- relationships, and shared values and visions among the school. I also found passive-avoidant leadership is not a predictor for collaborative learning and application among the staff. Lastly, I found no leadership styles were predictors for shared personal practice and supportive conditions- structures.

Download or read book The Relationship Between Teacher Perception of Principals Leadership Behaviors and Student Achievement written by Monte Damon Ladner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to determine whether a relationship exists between student achievement, as measured by school Quality of Distribution Index score, and school leadership based on staff perceptions of school leadership, as measured by the Survey of Supervisory Behavior. The leadership of seven schools was assessed by staff members in five different sub scales of leadership domains: human relations, trust/decision making, instructional leadership, control, and conflict. The seven schools sampled were comprised of four rural or county schools and three city schools. The subjects for this study were principals of standalone schools containing grades five, six, seven, and eight or some combination of the four grade levels. All 60 respondents to this study were teachers from a rural southern state. Of the respondents, 48.33% held a Bachelors degree, 71.66% had been at their schools six years or more, 81.66% had taught for six or more years, 95.00% were white, and 91.66% of participants were found to be teaching in their subject area. The survey instrument was comprised of five domains. All five domains and the instrument were correlated with QDI to determine whether relationships exist. None of the five domains were found to be statically significant in relation to QDI. Additionally, the Survey of Supervisory Behavior Instrument was not found to be statistically significant in relation to QDI.
