Book Common Planning Time in Middle Level Schools

Download or read book Common Planning Time in Middle Level Schools written by Steven B. Mertens and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the ninth volume in the Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education, is a compilation of research studies focusing on the use and implementation of common planning time (CPT) in middle level schools. All of the studies were part of the Middle Level Education Research SIG’s National Middle Grades Research Project (NMGRP) on Common Planning Time, which provides additional evidence about teachers’ understandings, experiences, the benefits and barriers about CPT. Since all researchers participating in the SIG-sponsored project utilized the same data collection protocols and followed the same protocols, the overall data collection was systematic and is highly reliable. Five research questions were generated to guide the development of the data collection protocols. While the authors were encouraged to use their data to address these project-level questions, they were not required to do so. The project consisted of both qualitative and quantitative data collection. Phase I (qualitative) consisted of observations of CPT meetings and structured interviews with teachers. Phase II (quantitative) was comprised of an online teacher survey. Within the chapters of this volume, a variety of relevant and meaningful research questions are examined utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Book Teachers Perception of the Use of Differentiated Instruction Strategies on Teacher Practice and Student Learning

Download or read book Teachers Perception of the Use of Differentiated Instruction Strategies on Teacher Practice and Student Learning written by Dr. Althea Seivwright-Lue and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative case study was developed to explore teachers’ perceptions of the use of differentiated instructional strategies and the impact it had on teacher practice and student learning after engaging in a professional development initiative. Teachers were trained using two professional development modules; a 90-minute face-to-face module and/or, an eight-hour book club. The research questions addressed how targeted professional development, in differentiated instruction, changed teacher instructional practice and how teachers, who used differentiated instructional strategies and techniques, perceived these strategies impacted student learning. Data instruments included teacher perception surveys, demographic surveys, classroom observations, lesson plan checklists, semi-structured questionnaires, and book club evaluations were collected over a two month time period, were analyzed from themes using a manual coding system. Based on the multiple sources of data collected, teachers needed change for their instructional practices and more differentiated instructional strategies in their daily lesson delivery models.

Book Writing Portfolios in the Classroom

Download or read book Writing Portfolios in the Classroom written by Robert Calfee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents chapters by researchers, practitioners, and policymakers who study the impact of classroom portfolios in the assessment of writing achievement by elementary and middle grade students. The focus throughout the volume is on the tension between classroom assessment and externally mandated testing. It presents the efforts of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to understand the impact of classroom portfolios for the assessment of writing achievement by elementary and middle grade students. Under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Writing, the editors conducted a national survey of exemplary portfolio projects, arranged for a series of "video visits," and held several working conferences. The result of this work is a broad-ranging tale: the aspirations of teachers and administrators to move the machinery of schooling in the direction of more authentic and engaging tasks, the puzzlement of students when they realize that the assignments are real and that the teacher may not have a "right answer" in mind, and the tensions between ivory-tower ideas and everyday classroom practice. Divided into four sections, this research volume: * provides a historical perspective, develops the conceptual framework that serves as a background for many activities described throughout, and discusses numerous practical issues that confront today's researchers and practitioners; * views the phenomenon of writing portfolios through a variety of broadview lenses such as teacher enthusiasm, student reflection, assessment tension, the portfolio as metaphor, and the locus of control; * conveys important conceptual issues with a balance toward pragmatics; and * offers unique insights from the perspective of one individual who serves as scholar, researcher, and teacher.
