Book excerpt: This study explores and identifies the qualities characteristic of the magical teacher. Five components contributed to the resulting concept of the magical teacher: (1) an investigation of the instructional philosophies and methods of magical teachers throughout history; (2) a review of existing literature describing qualities characteristic of teachers defined as effective or competent including a comparison of those descriptors to the descriptor, magical; (3) five discussion sessions with a group comprised of graduate students of psychology and experienced teachers identifying the qualities characteristic of the magical teacher; (4) self-reflection, analysis, and detailed examples of my own attitudes, beliefs, and behavior as a magical teacher in a fifth-grade public school classroom; and (5) a survey of the fifth-grade students with whom I have worked over the past two years of the cognitive and affective benefits of having experienced a magical teacher. Based upon these five methods of data collection, a comprehensive portrayal of the essence and value of the magical teacher are developed. Specific, concrete, practical examples are provided drawn from my actual classroom experiences as a magical teacher. This study concludes with recommendations for becoming a more magical teacher with particular focus on the impact of the human elements of teacher-student interactions on student learning and affective development. In a final revising and analysis of the profile of the magical teacher, two patterns become evident: (1) the final profile of the qualities characteristic of the magical teacher is identical to the qualities the magical teacher attempts to nurture in his or her students; and (2) Although being a magical teacher involves one's manner of being with one's students as well as the type of instructional activities and methods through which one facilitates student learning, the former is a much more critical component to being a magical teacher than the latter.
