Book excerpt: This handbook includes numerous activities to help teachers discuss prejudice and discrimination, and to help elementary students create an environment in which all people can develop to their full potential. Each activity aims to raise children's level of awareness, understanding, and tolerance of differences. In order to make this handbook relevant and timely, interviews were conducted with 101 children and 20 Utah teachers to determine which issues regarding prejudice might be of particular import. Findings from these interviews are discussed. Activities are organized into chapters corresponding to the following categories: (1) learning about prejudice; (2) disabilities; (3) race and ethnic differences; (4) appearance; (5) religion; (6) family and lifestyle; (7) gender; and (8) combatting prejudice and discrimination through books that can be read by children. Each chapter is divided into three sections. The first section discusses aspects of the particular prejudice. The second discusses what teachers can do, and the third describes individual classroom activities. A list of references is included. (PS)

Spirituality also plays a major role in finding and maintaining sobriety. The book section titled DNA, Life, and God is a depiction of Jesus Christ, who Dr. Dickerson acknowledges as his Higher Power. The term Higher Power is mentioned nine different times, in one form or another in the Twelve-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The founders of Alcoholics Anonymous were Christians who realized that the program could also work as long as members acknowledge that the Higher Power of their choice is greater than themselves.

Recognition as a teacher, or the strong and complex identification with one’s professional culture and community, is necessary for a positive sense of self. Increasingly, teachers are entering educational settings where difference connotes not equal, better/worse, or having more/less power over resources. Differences between discourses of identity are braided at many points with a discourse of racism, both interpersonal and structural. Teacher Identity and the Struggle for Recognition examines the nature of identity and recognition as social, cultural, and political constructs. In particular, the contributing authors to the book present discussions of the professional work necessary in teacher preparation programs concerned with preparing teachers for the complexities of teaching in schools that mirror an increasingly diverse society. Importantly, the authors illuminate many of the often problematic structures of schooling and the cultural politics that work to define one’s identity – drawing into specific relief the nature of the struggle for recognition that all face who choose to entering teaching as a profession.
