Book Fundamentals of Mathematics

Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Mathematics is a work text that covers the traditional study in a modern prealgebra course, as well as the topics of estimation, elementary analytic geometry, and introductory algebra. It is intended for students who: have had previous courses in prealgebra wish to meet the prerequisites of higher level courses such as elementary algebra need to review fundamental mathematical concenpts and techniques This text will help the student devlop the insight and intuition necessary to master arithmetic techniques and manipulative skills. It was written with the following main objectives: to provide the student with an understandable and usable source of information to provide the student with the maximum oppurtinity to see that arithmetic concepts and techniques are logically based to instill in the student the understanding and intuitive skills necessary to know how and when to use particular arithmetic concepts in subsequent material cources and nonclassroom situations to give the students the ability to correctly interpret arithmetically obtained results We have tried to meet these objects by presenting material dynamically much the way an instructure might present the material visually in a classroom. (See the development of the concept of addition and subtraction of fractions in section 5.3 for examples) Intuition and understanding are some of the keys to creative thinking, we belive that the material presented in this text will help students realize that mathematics is a creative subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher's Manual for First-Year Mathematics is a book written by George William Myers, a Professor of the Teaching of Mathematics and Astronomy at the University of Chicago. The book is intended as a teaching manual for teachers instructing their students using a textbook called First Year Mathematics. Myers' book is intended as a companion piece to the textbook First Year Mathematics, released by the same publishing company, The University of Chicago Press. The book makes effort to assist the teacher by providing them with a detailed how-to regarding teaching the specific problems presented in the textbook. Teacher's Manual is presented in chapters, each corresponding to a chapter in First Year Mathematics. Specific references are made to page numbers and problems presented in the textbook. In total, the book contains fourteen different chapters. Teacher's Manual for First-Tear Mathematics can only be used in conjunction with the appropriate textbook. Without access to First Year Mathematics, the book is of no use. It is however an excellent companion piece to the textbook, and those able to access the original textbook will surely find this text to be highly beneficial. While a well-written teacher's manual, George William Myers' book assumes the reader has access to the original textbook. If you are interested in making use of this manual, do ensure that you are also able to access First Year Mathematics. Book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics

Download or read book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics written by Liping Ma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of teachers in the U.S. often document insufficient subject matter knowledge in mathematics. Yet, these studies give few examples of the knowledge teachers need to support teaching, particularly the kind of teaching demanded by recent reforms in mathematics education. Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics describes the nature and development of the knowledge that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such knowledge seems more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts. The anniversary edition of this bestselling volume includes the original studies that compare U.S and Chinese elementary school teachers’ mathematical understanding and offers a powerful framework for grasping the mathematical content necessary to understand and develop the thinking of school children. Highlighting notable changes in the field and the author’s work, this new edition includes an updated preface, introduction, and key journal articles that frame and contextualize this seminal work.

Download or read book Knowing and Learning Mathematics for Teaching written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-02-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many questions about the mathematical preparation teachers need. Recent recommendations from a variety of sources state that reforming teacher preparation in postsecondary institutions is central in providing quality mathematics education to all students. The Mathematics Teacher Preparation Content Workshop examined this problem by considering two central questions: What is the mathematical knowledge teachers need to know in order to teach well? How can teachers develop the mathematical knowledge they need to teach well? The Workshop activities focused on using actual acts of teaching such as examining student work, designing tasks, or posing questions, as a medium for teacher learning. The Workshop proceedings, Knowing and Learning Mathematics for Teaching, is a collection of the papers presented, the activities, and plenary sessions that took place.

Throughout it are large exercise sets well-integrated with the text and varying appropriately from easy to hard. Basic issues are treated, and attention is given to small issues like not placing a mathematical symbol directly after a punctuation mark. And it provides many examples of what students should think and what they should write and how these two are often not the same.

Each of the 52 lessons begins with a measurable objective and includes a clear teaching activity, numerous optional games, activities and ideas for teacher made supplemental materials. Added sections such as "special problems" and "older students" assist the educator in adapting the program to the spectrum of learning challenges. Available Fall 2005, the Second Edition Level One Teacher's Manual has been revised by the original author. Letter to the Reader Semple Math is a complete, basic-skills mathematics program for students of all ages and all learning abilities. We use a carefully ordered sequence of associative mnemonics in order to embed an accurate understanding of math concepts and skills in the long-term memory of our students, hence the expression, "Simply Unforgettable." We do not ask students to memorize math facts through repetition. We do not use learning by rote methods that teach only to a student's short-term memory. We have never encountered a math program or a supplemental material based entirely on learning by association, nor have we ever encountered a program that has enjoyed our level of success with all students across the learning spectrum. Now in its 25th year, the program has undergone both a business reorganization and a long-awaited revision of the Level One Teacher's Manual by the original author, Jan Semple. Semple Math materials were formerly distributed by Stevenson Learning Skills, Inc. Moving forward, Semple Math, Inc., a new company founded by members of the Semple family, will actively market our program while safeguarding the integrity ofthis tried and true process. A new number name, as six, should always be given in the presence of a group of objects of the degree of plurality indicated by the number. Second. What is commonly called counting without objects, i. E., uttering the words one, two three, etc., which name the different de grees of plurality, is a useful exercise, provided that no new number words are presented in this way. The teacher should understand, of course, that this is not counting, but is simply making pupils ready and facile with the word series which constitutes the scale used in measuring degrees of plurality.
