Book excerpt: School systems across the state of Ohio, as well as across the country, are continually investigating ways to improve student achievement and student outcomes on standardized tests. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between school culture and student outcomes on the 6th grade reading section of the Ohio Proficiency Test. More specifically, this study examined the presence of a specific type of school culture based on resiliency theory. This study examined the presence of a resilient culture as perceived by the teachers within the school and the relationship to student outcomes on the 6th grade reading section of the Ohio Proficiency Test. The following conclusions were drawn: 1. This study indicates that school culture should be one variable considered when examining student outcomes and how to improve student success on high stakes tests. Furthermore, two sub-scales (Teaching of Life Skills and High Expectations) of a specific type of school culture known as a resilient school culture have been found to significantly impact proficiency scores in this exploratory study. 2. Even though one participating school had greater than 50% of its students coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, it was able to get more than 50% of its students to pass the 6th grade Reading Proficiency Test. This same school had the highest average response rate on 14 of the 36 items administered on the 3Assessing School Resiliency Building4 survey. The information discussed and the findings of this study have implications for school administrators, teachers, superintendents, state agencies, intervention specialists, researchers, parents, and most of all students.

A review of the literature focused on the impact of teacher perception on student resilience, the impact of grit and growth-mindset on student resilience, and the impact of social-emotional learning on student resilience. This study was guided by three research questions: (a) Based on teachers' perceptions, to what extent do students need resiliency skills to be successful in elementary schools? (b) Based on teachers' perceptions, to what extent are teachers able to teach, model, and provide alternative strategies to help develop students' resiliency skills in elementary schools? (c) Based on teachers' perceptions, to what extent are students provided with opportunities to independently apply resiliency skills and strategies in elementary schools? This study was conducted in two suburban school districts located in southeastern Pennsylvania. Thirty-eight classroom teachers completed the entire online survey on elementary teachers' perceptions of student resiliency and five teachers were interviewed to provide additional insight. The results of this study revealed that elementary teachers see a need for students to develop their resiliency skills to be successful in school. Additionally, elementary teachers indicated they do not have sufficient time in their schedules to help teach and model these skills for students on a consistent basis. The need to teach these skills emerged as teacher participants expressed that not all students in their classroom have the skills to be resilient due to their experiences outside of school, their support systems, and their personal mindset about challenging tasks or situations.

The book acknowledges that the substantial level of change required– cultural, structural, pedagogical and relational – to improve early career teacher resilience demands a great deal of cooperation and support from governments, education systems, schools, universities and communities: teachers cannot do it alone.
