Book Teacher Perceptions of which School Culture Factors are Most Important to Effective Implementation of a Character Education Program

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of which School Culture Factors are Most Important to Effective Implementation of a Character Education Program written by Yancy Poorman and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify perceptions of teachers regarding the factors of school culture that relate to the implementation of character education in rural schools. The relationship school culture has with the implementation process of character education has yet to be fully examined. In this study, the researcher administered the Degree of Implementation Scale survey (CSD, 1999) and the School Culture Survey (Gruenert & Valentine, 1998). The six factors of school culture (collaborative leadership, teacher collaboration, professional development, collegial support, unity of purpose and learning partnership) were analyzed for predictive relationships with the ten essentials of character education implementation (character education policy, defined traits, integrated curriculum, experiential learning, evaluation, adult role models, staff development, student involvement, and sustaining the program). Several significant predictive relationships were identified.

Book The Role of School Culture in the Implementation of a Character Education Program

Download or read book The Role of School Culture in the Implementation of a Character Education Program written by Kristin A. Denbow and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of school culture in the implementation of a character education program. Quantitative data were collected from 204 certified school personnel from ten elementary schools currently implementing the CharacterPlus character education program in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Follow-up, semi-structured interviews with five percent of the sample population provided qualitative data. Pearson product-moment correlations were run between the six factors of school culture (collaborative leadership, teacher collaboration, professional development, unity of purpose, collegial support, and learning partnership), as measured by the School Culture Survey, and the ten factors of character education implementation (community participation, character education policy, defined traits, integrated curriculum, experiential learning, evaluation, adult role models, staff development, student leadership, and sustaining the program). Significant correlations were noted between all factors. The strongest school culture correlations were found in the factors of Learning Partnership, Unity of Purpose, and Collegial Support. Backward elimination multiple regression were run on all ten character education implementation factors in order to determine whether predictive linear relationships existed between the factors of school culture and character education implementation. Strong predictive linear relationships were discovered between the school culture factors of Learning Partnership, Unity of Purpose, and Collaborative Leadership and the factors of character education implementation. Weak linear relationships were discovered with the school culture factors of Teacher Collaboration and Professional Development. This study supported the notion that building a strong partnership with the stakeholders of a school and having a defined and focused vision and mission can help the implementation of a character education program.

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Character Education Programs in Middle and High Schools written by Chelsea E. Graff and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document defines character and character education, as it applies to the school setting. It explores the history and purpose of character education, the impact that character education has had on school violence, programmatic attempts at character education, and the strengths and weaknesses associated with character education programs. The researcher also identifies developmental targets and explains the role of the school counselor in implementing character education. The researcher sought out to determine the core values that were being incorporated and the teachers' perceptions of the character education program at the middle and high school level. This project took place at a rural public school in Livingston County, located approximately 20 miles southwest of Rochester, NY. The individuals who were selected to participate were employed as full-time teachers in the middle and high school. Teachers were asked to provide their perceptions of the character education program in regards to planning and implementation. Overall, teachers indicated that they were supportive of the program and were successfully able to teach, demonstrate, and model the behaviors that they expected their students to exhibit. Teachers identified several core values that were being incorporated into their classroom curricula, but integrity, responsibility, and respect were identified as being the most significant.

Book Stakeholder Perceptions of an Exemplary Middle School Character Education Program and Its Implications for School Improvement

Download or read book Stakeholder Perceptions of an Exemplary Middle School Character Education Program and Its Implications for School Improvement written by Johncarlos M. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Character education (CE) in schools has been reported to support a safe school environment in which adults and students can embrace core ethical values such as respect, fairness, and responsibility, for example (Pala, 2011). It has the power to not only "cultivate minds [but] nurture hearts" as well (Pala, 2011, p. 26). The creation of a safe teaching and learning environment in which students and staff engage in critical discourse of ethical issues related character development can produce an atmosphere of human beings who feel better about themselves and their work. As a result, one cannot overlook the implications for school improvement that character education presents for those courageous enough to purposefully and intently engage its implementation in schools. Given the troubling trends in today's youth substantiated by research (Dahlberg, Toal, Swahn, & Behrens, 2005; Garofalo, Wolf, Kessel, Palfrey, & Durant, 1998; Lickona, 1996; Pena, Matthieu, Zayas, Masyn, & Caine, 2012), the purpose of this study was to investigate stakeholder perceptions of the influence of an exemplary character education program's implementation in a middle school and its contribution to school improvement. This study was a qualitative interview study in which 19 participants from teachers, support staff, administrators, and a parent were asked their insight regarding the implementation of an exemplary character education program that was grounded in the Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education. The interview study coupled with document analysis was the approach necessary to address the central research question: How did the three-year implementation of an exemplary middle school character education program contribute to school improvement at a middle school that was recognized for its exemplary character education program? Over a three-year period of character education program implementation, BOA Middle, experienced reductions in its out-of-school suspensions by over 65%, increased staff attendance, reduced teacher turnover from 33% to 11%, was named a PCS district Highly Enhanced School, met 29 of 29 academic targets, was named a Positive Behavior Intervention Support Model School for the state due to its exemplary character education program, experienced high growth as determined by student achievement and state accountability data, and met federal accountability growth standards. Through this study, the following themes emerged regarding participants' perceptions about the implementation of the exemplary character education program: " Character is Multidimensional " CE is 24/7/365 " Implementation requires consistency " CE fosters school improvement as Adults Lead and Students Achieve " School communities can support CE through Collaboration, Service Learning, and Reflection."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Teacher Perception of Character Education

Download or read book Teacher Perception of Character Education written by Lone Tuff and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores teachers' understanding of character education, their perceived role in curriculum development, implementation effectiveness, and their teaching practices. This two-part investigation surveys teachers from two schools, followed by an interview process with six of those participants. The school staffs of one elementary school and one elementary-junior-high school were surveyed to provide a general overview of teacher understanding of expectations, their knowledge of character traits identified in the curriculum goals of their Board of Education, and opinions about how their current teaching practice addresses the development of character. The interview data provided indepth information about teacher interpretation of character by their Western Canadian urban Public Board, details about their current teaching practices, including techniques and strategies incorporated, and their feelings about how character education should be taught in the school. The research revealed that teachers were generally unaware of the board's curriculum expectations of the 11 character traits to be taught in school. There were mixed responses about who was responsible for teaching character: Some felt the responsibility was on the parents, while others felt it should be all adults. The study found that teachers were, in fact, currently teaching and assessing students on many of the traits identified as being significant as part of the hidden, lived curriculum.

Book School Culture Development in China Perceptions of Teachers and Principals

Download or read book School Culture Development in China Perceptions of Teachers and Principals written by Kai Yu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School culture is playing an increasingly important role in school performance and educational development. Within the national campaign in China for the innovative and sustainable development of education, local governments in Beijing Municipality have encouraged and facilitated educational innovation toward better school culture. In recent years various initiatives have been undertaken by a select group of schools to develop strategies and further action toward innovation and change. This book documents an investigation of how teachers and principals perceive school culture development in China. A survey was conducted among 1,992 informants from 37 schools (located in four different districts) in Beijing Municipality. The results of this study indicated that the respondents had overall positive perceptions of school culture construction and development in the educational change process. In general, they showed a positive attitude toward the school culture improvement initiatives, reported satisfaction about their current school culture and held confidence in the direction their school culture is heading. The study demonstrated that certain factors, such as school geographical location and respondents’ job duty, job title, and gender, make a difference in how participants perceive their school’s culture. Teachers and principals from a less economically developed district had less awareness of, involvement in, and understanding of school culture development in all its aspects. A notable gap between teachers and principals was identified in their perception of the core values and norms of the school and of communication between teachers and principals. This study suggests that for educational development to be further carried forward successfully, there is an urgent need for better distribution of educational resources (both financial and leadership), common understanding, agreed-upon goals, and efficient communication between principals and teachers. Book Character Education

Download or read book Character Education written by Jason Alex Ampel and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While schools are academic institutions to prepare our country's youth for their future, developing a child's character and civic responsibilities is necessary and is often deleted from the explicit curriculum set forth in most school districts throughout the country. This study investigated the perception of character education of teachers in a Central Florida school district, as it related to teacher importance, teacher efficacy, and teacher practice of character education. This study investigated the responses of 497 classroom teachers surveyed within one Central Florida school district. The questionnaire used in this study was designed to illuminate teacher perceptions of character education, by examining a teacher's level of importance, efficacy, and practice of character education in their classrooms and schools. The three areas of importance, efficacy, and practice were examined to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference among Central Florida educators based upon demographic variables of a) grades level taught, b) years of experience, c) highest degree attained, d) gender, and e) National Board Certification. The results of this survey, in combination with existing research findings, proved to be beneficial in revealing the ideals and explicit actions that need to be prevalent in public schools today to insure a balance between academics and the development of civic behaviors and positive character values. This study was a step in a effort to depict the voices of all teachers as stakeholders in one Central Florida School district.

Book The Discourse of Character Education

Download or read book The Discourse of Character Education written by Peter Smagorinsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-05-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Peter Smagorinsky and Joel Taxel analyze the ways in which the perennial issue of character education has been articulated in the United States, both historically and in the current character education movement that began in earnest in the 1990s. The goal is to uncover the ideological nature of different conceptions of character education. The authors show how the current discourses are a continuation of discourse streams through which character education and the national purpose have been debated for hundreds of years, most recently in what are known as the Culture Wars--the intense, often passionate debates about morality, culture, and values carried out by politicians, religious groups, social policy foundations, and a wide range of political commentators and citizens, in which the various stakeholders have sought influence over a wide range of social and economic issues, including education. The centerpiece is a discourse analysis of proposals funded by the United States Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI). Discourse profiles from sets of states that exhibit two distinct conceptions of character are examined and the documents from particular states are placed in dialogue with the OERI Request for Proposals. One profile reflects the dominant perspective promoted in the U.S., based on an authoritarian view in which young people are indoctrinated into the value system of presumably virtuous adults through didactic instruction. The other reflects the well-established yet currently marginal discourse emphasizing attention to the whole environment in which character is developed and enacted and in which reflection on morality, rather than didactic instruction in morality, is the primary instructional approach. By focusing on these two distinct regions and their conceptions of character, the authors situate the character education movement at the turn of the twenty-first century in the context of historical notions about the nature of character and regional conceptions regarding the nature of societal organization. This enlightening volume is relevant to scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and students across the field of education, particularly those involved in character education, moral development, discourse analysis, history and cultural foundations of education, and related fields, and to the wider public interested in character education.

Book Implementation of a Character Education Program in Elementary Schools

Download or read book Implementation of a Character Education Program in Elementary Schools written by Angela C. Rufo and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been renewed interest, recently, in teaching character education in elementary schools. A literature review revealed characteristics of effective character education programs currently implemented in schools across the United States. A qualitative and quantitative study was planned to examine the perceptions of parents and teachers in three different elementary schools in a major archdiocese that currently have character education programs as part of their academic curriculum. Each of the programs evolved from a separate curriculum to one that is incorporated throughout the entire school day. Two of the schools were located in suburban areas and the third was situated in an urban setting. Separate surveys were designed for parents and faculty with some identical statements on each. The entire faculties in each school as well as all registered families received surveys and were asked to voluntarily participate. Analysis of the data from the surveys revealed that the programs in these three schools were perceived to be necessary and effective. Parents and teachers were asked to list the virtues that were stressed in their schools. Values identified were conflict resolution strategies, peer mediation, honesty, fairness, politeness, respect, kindness, and compassion. Participants agreed that character education should be taught in the schools. Parents stated that they expected the schools to reinforce the values and morals they were teaching at home. The results of the surveys supported the research that with the implementation of character education programs in elementary schools the students perform better academically and the atmosphere in the school is conducive to learning.

Book First Grade Teacher Perceptions of a Character Education Program

Download or read book First Grade Teacher Perceptions of a Character Education Program written by Gina Skinner and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study will be to describe perceptions of first grade teachers at a north Georgia elementary school regarding a character education program. Although the debate continues as to who should instill our children with values, little documentation exists concerning how educators perceive their role as instructors of character. Many character education programs exist, and many schools have adopted their use. However, school systems are struggling with budget issues, and when deciding where funding may be cut, non-academic programs such as character education are often the first areas terminated. Yet, teachers appear to have little voice in if or how the programs are implemented and/or used in their classrooms. This creates the need of this research. The purpose of the study will be to explore the phenomenon of teacher attitudes and perceptions concerning the instruction of character education using the book entitled The 7 Habits of Happy Kids (2008) by Sean Covey. Research revealing teacher perspectives on teaching character education through the use of this book will provide vital information to curriculum planners struggling with such budgetary issues and decisions.
