Book Understanding by Design

Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book Student and Teacher Perceptions Regarding a Project Based Team Teaching Program

Download or read book Student and Teacher Perceptions Regarding a Project Based Team Teaching Program written by Daniel G. Daneker and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of teachers and at-risk students regarding a transition program utilized in one south central Pennsylvania high school. This program, known as Innovations, identifies students in eighth grade as at-risk for not graduating and places them into a freshman and sophomore instructional setting that delivers core classes within a team structure providing the students with project based learning opportunities. This qualitative study incorporated the use of on-line surveys for students and teachers as well student focus groups and teacher face-to-face interviews to gather perceptions regarding the Innovations program. The findings of this study suggest that the at-risk students who participate in the Innovations program and the teachers at the subject high school have a positive perception regarding the impact of the program. The team structure as well as project based learning were likewise viewed as components with a positive impact on the program's success.

Book The Alternate Route Teachers Transition to the Classroom

Download or read book The Alternate Route Teachers Transition to the Classroom written by Christopher Nagy and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) report in 2005 more than 3.7 million teachers were educating more than 54 million elementary and high school students across the country. Given the current teacher population of more than 3 million among 16,000 school districts across the country, the turnover rate is projected to be up to fifty percent (Feistritzer, Harr, Hobar, & Losselyong, 2004). With a focus on 21st century skill development, individuals with life experiences in the work place and industry will serve as a pool of candidates to fill these vacancies. According to Feistritzer (2009), all fifty states and the District of Columbia now have Alternate Route (AR) teaching certification programs to recruit individuals who have earned college degrees and worked in their chosen fields but had no prior teaching experience. The focus of this study explores issues related to the New Jersey high school alternate route teachers' transition process to the classroom in the following three phases.

Book Eighth Grade Transition to High School

Download or read book Eighth Grade Transition to High School written by Kristen Campbell-Wilder and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2009 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of eighth grade students and eighth and ninth grade teachers regarding academic, procedural, and social transition issues from middle school to high school. The research design was a multi-site, mixed methods case study of two suburban districts with single 6-8th grade middle schools feeding a single high school. Academic issues explored student concern about harder classes, homework, grades, more teachers, preparation for college, and preparation for life. Procedural issues included concerns about the size of the school, getting lost, getting to class on time, school rules, and expectations. Social issues covered included safety, sense of belonging, fitting in, bullying and freedom. The conceptual framework for this study was based on a study of elementary to middle school transition by Akos and Galassi (2004) which grouped transition issues into three components: academic, procedural and social. This study examined how these same issues are related to the transition at a secondary school level.

Book Perspectives on Transitions in Schooling and Instructional Practice

Download or read book Perspectives on Transitions in Schooling and Instructional Practice written by Susan E. Elliott-Johns and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on Transitions in Schooling and Instructional Practice examines student transitions between major levels of schooling, teacher transitions in instructional practice, and the intersection of these two significant themes in education research. Twenty-six leading international experts offer meaningful insights on current pedagogical practices, obstacles to effective transitions, and proven strategies for stakeholders involved in supporting students in transition. The book is divided into four sections, representing the four main transitions in formal schooling: Early Years (Home, Pre-school, and Kindergarten) to Early Elementary (Grades 1–3); Early Elementary to Late Elementary (Grades 4–8); Late Elementary to Secondary (Grades 9–12); and Secondary to Post-Secondary (College and University). A coda draws together over-arching themes from throughout the text to provide recommendations and a visual model that captures their interactions. Combining theoretical approaches with practical examples of school-based initiatives, this book will appeal to those involved in supporting either the student experience (both academically and emotionally) or teacher professional learning and growth.

Book Administrators and Teachers Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Transition Programs for Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Administrators and Teachers Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Transition Programs for Students with Disabilities written by Anthony J. Serafini and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of practicing high-school educators and administrators pertaining to the challenges associated with transition and the factors considered to be most effective in the transition process. Perceptual data were collected from 30 teachers and administrators working across five central Pennsylvania school districts through an online survey and in-depth interviews. An analysis was performed to determine notable similarities and differences across participants' perceptions. This study revealed that both teachers and administrators had similar perceptions in terms of effective transition practices, citing 16 specific areas of transition as having some level of importance. Respondents most strongly agreed that the availability of the high-school transition program would have greatest potential to impact the transition process. Furthermore, professionals taking part in the study indicated that (a) difficulty securing community-based work assignments, (b) educating parents, (c) accessing transportation, (d) competition from other schools, (e) difficulty designing programming and postsecondary goals for students with the most significant disabilities, and (f) access to appropriate coursework, were amongst the greatest challenges or barriers to the transition process.

Book Perceptions of Students of Color About Their Experience in an Alternative High School

Download or read book Perceptions of Students of Color About Their Experience in an Alternative High School written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public schools in Oregon have been struggling to include students of color and teachers of color for so long. Students of color represent more than one third of the school population, yet remain underserved, underrepresented, and over disciplined. Most of their teachers and support staff are White; the teachers of color represent less than 8% of the teaching staff. The students of color attend comprehensive high schools that generally ignore them--or push them out. Some students of color end up in alternative schools. My problem of practice was the oppression of students of color in urban schools. Specifically, my research problem focused on their experiences in an alternative high school. The purpose of my study was to describe and explain the perceptions of students of color about their experiences in that alternative high school. Using a critical race framework and phenomenological inquiry, I conducted nine interviews with three students of color who consented to a three-interview series in one month. Data analysis led to the identification of four themes: learning in an alternative school; welcoming and accommodating environment; lived experiences in alternative school, and absence of dominant discourse. My findings aligned with the tenets of critical race theory as they show that students of color were not welcome in the education system; they also reflected the findings evident in the research literature. My study revealed that schools should not focus on contents only, but should also use content to teach for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
