Visitors to Stoke Park in Worcestershire could be forgiven for thinking that the house had a timeless quality. Certainly this occurs to Frederick Jourdan, the American composer who has rented the place to escape from overwork and from his well-meaning but exhausting fiancée. He revels in the peace and beauty of the place, until, early one morning, he happens upon the heartstopping sight of the reclusive young occupant of the nearby Folly feeding deer at early dawn. He finds his life has been changed for ever. Time has indeed stood still for Fleur Fisher-Dilke, but for reasons that can't be guessed. Born to an ambitious surgeon and his social-climbing wife, Fleur has only ever been seen as a tool to improve the family's social prospects. Quite by chance, however, she finds she has a prodigious gift, and in spite of her parents' opposition, her talent blossoms. Choices are made, but not forgiven, and it is only when her life takes a sudden and tragic turn, and she meets a fascinating and irreverent figure who is her opposite in every way, that Fleur finds the courage she needs to move forward... *************************************************************************************************** 'Her imagination is thoroughly original...A fairy tale, which is all the more delightful as it is not something one expects from a modern novel...It's heady stuff'' -- Daily Mail 'Charlotte Bingham's devotees will recognise her supreme skill as a storyteller...A heartwarming romance which is full of emotion.' -- INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY 'Charlotte Bingham can't have written a better book than this one. Book The Music of William Schuman Vincent Persichetti and Peter Mennin

Download or read book The Music of William Schuman Vincent Persichetti and Peter Mennin written by Walter Simmons and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Schuman, Vincent Persichetti, and Peter Mennin were three of the most significant American composers of the 20th century, yet their music has largely disappeared from view since their respective deaths. Because they each spent the majority of their careers working at the Juilliard School and Lincoln Center, their music is often viewed as "interchangeable." In The Music of William Schuman, Vincent Persichetti, and Peter Mennin: Voices of Stone and Steel, Walter Simmons provides a thorough examination of the lives and work of these artists, clarifying their considerable individuality both as composers and as human beings. The book begins with a comprehensive introduction summarizing the conventional view of the history of American music, while noting the marginalization of traditionalist composers—those who preferred to work with the musical forms and developmental principles on which the body of Western classical music is based. In the chapters that follow, each composer is presented through a brief overview and a biographical essay, followed by a general description of his style. Extensively researched and including detailed discussions and insights, the sections include lists of the composer's "most representative, fully realized works" and then provide systematic overviews of most or all of their compositions, giving the reader a general understanding of the artist and his work. The overviews contain a description of each composition, information concerning first performance and first recording, excerpts from reviews as well as Simmons' own critical assessment of each, and a statement of its place within the composer's output as a whole. A selected bibliography and essential discography follows at the end of each chapter.

Book Teach Like You Imagined It

Download or read book Teach Like You Imagined It written by Kevin Lister and published by Crown House Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Lister's Teach Like You Imagined It: Finding the right balance shares a wealth of tools, ideas and encouragement to help teachers manage the conflicting pressures of teaching and become the educators they imagined. Teaching is an incredible profession, but it also comes with a potentially toxic workload. You do not have to put up with burn-out, however and one way to avoid it is to return to how you imagined teaching to be in the first place. Before you became a teacher, you pictured yourself as a teacher; in your imagination you almost certainly saw yourself as happy, efficient and able to manage your worklife balance effectively. Yet chances are that the reality of teaching is a little different, and it is this disconnect that can give rise to stress, anxiety and frustration. But what if you could use simple strategies to get a handle on your schedule and take control of your workload? Covering lesson planning, behaviour management, the streamlining of marking and getting the best out of CPD, Kevin Lister has drawn on his background in engineering to fill this book with trusted techniques and savvy suggestions to help you maximise your productivity and teach like you imagined it. Each chapter examines a different aspect of the day-to-day reality of teaching and suggests alternative, practical ways to look at or approach common tasks. Throughout the book Kevin touches on topics such as time management, prioritisation, educational research, leadership, psychology and other diverse concepts that his personal experiences and education have led him to explore. After each area of discussion there are prompts for action, where Kevin asks you to reflect on your working habits, question your practices and decide what you will do in response. Suitable for both new and experienced teachers looking to boost their day-to-day efficiency and find the right balance.

Book Troublemakers

  • Author : Carla Shalaby
  • Publisher : The New Press

  • ISBN : 1620972379
  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book Troublemakers written by Carla Shalaby and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radical educator's paradigm-shifting inquiry into the accepted, normal demands of school, as illuminated by moving portraits of four young "problem children" In this dazzling debut, Carla Shalaby, a former elementary school teacher, explores the everyday lives of four young "troublemakers," challenging the ways we identify and understand so-called problem children. Time and again, we make seemingly endless efforts to moderate, punish, and even medicate our children, when we should instead be concerned with transforming the very nature of our institutions, systems, and structures, large and small. Through delicately crafted portraits of these memorable children—Zora, Lucas, Sean, and Marcus—Troublemakers allows us to see school through the eyes of those who know firsthand what it means to be labeled a problem. From Zora's proud individuality to Marcus's open willfulness, from Sean's struggle with authority to Lucas's tenacious imagination, comes profound insight—for educators and parents alike—into how schools engender, exclude, and then try to erase trouble, right along with the young people accused of making it. And although the harsh disciplining of adolescent behavior has been called out as part of a school-to-prison pipeline, the children we meet in these pages demonstrate how a child's path to excessive punishment and exclusion in fact begins at a much younger age. Shalaby's empathetic, discerning, and elegant prose gives us a deeply textured look at what noncompliance signals about the environments we require students to adapt to in our schools. Both urgent and timely, this paradigm-shifting book challenges our typical expectations for young children and with principled affection reveals how these demands—despite good intentions—work to undermine the pursuit of a free and just society.

Book Understanding by Design

Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book It s the Teacher Stupid

Download or read book It s the Teacher Stupid written by Pierson F. Melcher and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine, if you will, a group of doctors trained in 1850 seeing for the first time a modern operating room. They would, of course, be overwhelmed - and not just with the equipment! Even the process of diagnosing the patient's problem would be totally alien. We can probably all agree that change for the sake of change, whether in education or elsewhere, is not necessarily desirable. In fact, Melcher's logic frequently takes us back to some of the successful structures and patterns of education which have been abandoned in a decades-long, discouraging parade of failure: our attempts at curriculum reform, the introduction of more and more social programs, the growing dominance of athletics and the ever-less-demanding levels of academic achievement. In the course of these observations he makes us realize that without substantial qualitative changes in the structure of the school "system(s)" themselves, the general quality of public education will continue its descent to ever-lower levels of mediocrity. And nothing of this accelerating process, which has been characterized by others as "the dumbing down of America," is as critical as the ever-shrinking pool of high quality teachers. Always in short supply, the number of bright and well-educated young people who graduate from college and enter the teaching profession is shrinking rapidly. Mostly because teaching salaries have never kept pace with the economic development in this country, a situation which in turn has been encouraged by the lack of professionalism projected by teacher unions, the young people who should be exercising their talents in the classroom are entering other businesses and professions where their efforts are more respected and better compensated. This is a book by a man who has worked with schools and school children for forty years, a man who appeals to our common sense to begin the painful process of necessary change.

Book Teaching Landscape History

Download or read book Teaching Landscape History written by Jan Woudstra and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape history is changing in content and style to address the issues of today. Experienced teachers and authors on the history of gardens and landscapes come together in this new volume to share ideas on the future of teaching history in departments of landscape architecture, archaeology, geography and allied subjects. Design history remains important, but this volume brings to the fore the increasing importance of environmental history, economic history, landscape history, cultural landscapes, environmental justice and decolonisation, ideas of sustainability and climate change amelioration, which may all be useful in serving the needs of a widening range of students in an increasingly complex world. The main themes include: what history should we narrate in the education of landscape architects? how can we recognise counter-narratives and our own bias? how should we engage the students in the history of their chosen profession? how can designers and researchers be persuaded of the relevance of history teaching to theory and practice? and what resources do we need to develop teaching of landscape histories? This book will be of interest to anyone teaching courses on landscape architecture, urban design, horticulture, garden design, architectural history, cultural geography and more.

Download or read book Be the Adult written by F. Lance Hoopes and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I will never forget the moment I first learned to “Be the Adult.” It was in my first job as an administrator after many years of teaching. I bested a kid in a passionate argument and sent him back to class while my boss and mentor looked on. I glowed with pride until he quietly deflated me with the five words that changed the rest of my career: “Remember, Lance: You’re the adult.” That phrase floods my mind with stories, the stories in this book. Some are heroic, some are embarrassing, but all of them can help you learn what I learned. I had to be the adult in a band room facing hostile kids, and facing students who played a passage so beautifully it brought tears to my eyes. I had to be the adult on 110-degree Tucson, Arizona, football fields, in band buses far from home — and facing concerned superintendents and furious teachers as an administrator. Schools can and do change students for the better, but only on one condition: Someone has to Be the Adult.

Book excerpt: This report (HCP 44, session 2009-10, ISBN 9780215542663) from the Science and Technology Committee looks at literacy programmes evidence check and concludes that expectations by the Department for Children, Schools and Families of the quality of the evidence base for reading programmes are worryingly low. It urges the Government to commission randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The Committee also states it is particularly concerned about the quality of evidence demonstrating cost-effectiveness of different programmes and further recommends that the Government reviews its guidelines on RCT design; it says even Wikipedia is more thorough and informative. The Committee also concludes, that: the Government's focus on early literacy interventions and phonics-based teaching is based on the best available evidence; the use of Reading Recovery is based on a lower quality of evidence than the Committee is comfortable with and that the decision to introduce Reading Recovery nationally is not evidence based. The Committee further expressed alarm that there was a complete lack of randomised controlled trials using standardised test scores for the Reading Recovery programme in the UK school system, before national implementation of the programme.
