In teacher preparation programs, teacher education students are commonly expected to demonstrate achievement of program goals and objectives and national teaching standards in a "portfolio." Gaining in popularity, the electronic portfolio delivers meaningful rich data in an electronic format. Much of the research on electronic portfolios has centered in higher education and has been primarily focused on the delivery of portfolios from the perspective of faculty and on the role of the portfolio in assessment from an administrative perspective. With limited research on the student voice in the process of the creation and implementation of electronic portfolio, this research studied the perceptions of the electronic portfolio from the end-user, recent graduates in teacher education. Using a qualitative framework, recent graduates from a teacher preparation program were interviewed regarding their electronic portfolio experience. Qualitative data were collected via structured interviews on the process, preparation, and utilization of the electronic portfolio during the teacher education program. Additionally, the electronic portfolios of those interviewed provided document analysis. Several themes emerged that centered on the repetitive narrative of the narrative rationale statements, the utilitarian purposes of the portfolio, the impact of the portfolio assessment on portfolio changes, and the reflective nature of portfolio construction. The implications of this research extend to the use of electronic portfolios in higher education across disciplines and into k-12 education. Book excerpt: The qualitative case study approach investigated the perceptions that Teacher Education Faculty (TEF) developed as a result of using the electronic portfolio, or eFolio, in the teacher education program at the institution that was studied. The research questions were: (1) What are the perceptions of TEF of the success of the eFolio program at the institution? (2) What are the perceptions of TEF of the technical support provided for the eFolio at the institution? (3) What are the perceptions of the TEF of using the eFolio as an assessment of the teacher education program to meet accreditation standards? (4) What are the perceptions of the TEF of using the eFolio to meet technology integration in teacher education requirements? (5) What are the perceptions of the TEF of using the eFolio for teacher candidate assessment? The mixed method study used both qualitative and quantitative data analysis procedures. The study used three sources of data: email correspondence records between Teacher Education Faculty (TEF) and eFolio Support, an online survey, and follow-up semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Results (1), of analysis of data revealed that 85% of TEF members perceived the eFolio to be worth the time. (2), evidence indicated 75% of the TEF perceived the technical support candidates received for the eFolio to be beneficial. (3), analysis of data show that 60% of TEF perceived the eFolio's as a tool to be used in accreditation. (4), 65% of TEF in the study reported they did not perceive the eFolio as a way to integrate technology in the teacher education curriculum. (5), result of data analysis revealed that 65% of TEF reported the eFolio was a successful way to assess candidates. The study contributed to the emerging body of research concerning the use of the eFolio in teacher education programs. As the use technology continues to grow in teacher preparation programs, the eFolio will take the place of the traditional hard copy portfolio for candidate assessment, technology integration, and program accreditation.

Book excerpt: Documentation of outcomes associated with teacher education portfolios and the quality of the reflections contained within the portfolios is sparse. This collective case study (Stake, 1995) of six teacher candidates enrolled in an elementary teacher education program at a large mid-western university explores the outcomes of developing a portfolio based on state standards. The first question of this study focuses on the outcomes of the portfolio process for the teacher candidate; the second question is an investigation of the critical events that facilitate the outcomes associated with the teacher portfolio. Zeichner and Wray's (2001) critical dimensions of a portfolio process are used as a framework for understanding current research and the data from these portfolios. The third question addresses the nature and quality of reflections that accompany portfolios using Sparks-Langer, Simmons, Pasch, Colton, and Starko's (1990) Framework for Pedagogical Thinking. In this qualitative study, Glasser and Strauss'(1967) constant comparative method is used to analyze data within and among the six cases. Data sources include electronic-portfolios, observations of portfolio seminars, and interviews with teacher candidates, cooperating teachers, and center coordinators. Credibility and dependability is based on prolonged engagement, triangulation, a comprehensive member check, and an auditor check. A "reflexive journal" (Lincoln & Guba, 1985, p. 327) is used to increase the overall trustworthiness. Historical theories of reflection by Dewey (1933) and Schön (1987) are considered during the final analysis. The study identifies four outcomes of this portfolio process for the teacher candidate: it increased their understanding of standards; supported the organization and articulation of their thoughts; encouraged them to reflect; and provided a snapshot of their professional growth. Three additional critical dimensions support the portfolio outcomes: the rationale guidelines, the assessment process, and the entire portfolio process.
