Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined teacher and administrator perceptions of how Project-Based Learning (PBL) using a makerspace affects elementary students in 3 to 6 districts in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The participants in this study were 11 teachers and 2 administrators that had at least 1 year prior experience with makerspace education. Data were collected using an online survey that contained 32 items and utilized multiplechoice, open-ended questions, and 5-point Likert-type statements. The researcher conducted interviews with 3 teacher participants and 1 administrator participant. The results of this study suggested that teachers generally prefer PBL over textbook, citing high student engagement levels as a main driving factor; however, they found PBL more difficult to set up initially. The administrators reported a general agreement with their teacher counterparts, also referencing high student engagement; however, the preference for PBL was less pronounced. The teacher and administrator participants reported inconsistent or no professional development related to makerspaces on the survey. The teachers also reported their perceptions of the effect the makerspace had on students' learning; they reported a general positive effect on student learning. Teachers stated they would like more time in their schedule for makerspace activities: they wanted to see students more frequently, with less time between meetings. The administrators responded similarly to the teachers; they expressed that makerspaces provide a positive effect on student learning. Finding ways to mitigate issues of time and increasing professional development could enhance the effects PBL and makerspaces have on student learning.

Book excerpt: This study examined teachers' perceptions of the effects of Mass Customized Learning (MCL) on students in elementary school. Two schools from South Dakota and one school from Maine were the focus of this qualitative study. Teachers were questioned through online surveys containing Likert scale statements and through individual interviews. Data instruments were used to ask teachers about Mass Customized Learning and its effect on student engagement, student academic achievement, and student discipline. This qualitative study found that, in general, most teachers perceived MCL to have positive effects on student engagement, student academic achievement, and student discipline. Teachers reported increased student engagement and increased student academic achievement with the use of MCL. Teachers also reported that various aspects of student discipline decreased in their MCL classroom; however, teacher surveys showed less agreement toward this finding. Several questions on the teacher survey and interview focused on the general effectiveness of MCL in elementary classrooms. Overall, the results of the survey found that most teachers believe MCL is an effective teaching strategy. The United States Department of Education has endorsed personalized learning as a means to improve educational outcomes for students across the country; however, current research on MCL is limited. This study found that teachers from two schools in South Dakota and one school in Maine perceive MCL as having positive impacts on student engagement, academic achievement, and discipline.

Book excerpt: The concept of "funds of knowledge" is based on a simple premise: people are competent and have knowledge, and their life experiences have given them that knowledge. The claim in this book is that first-hand research experiences with families allow one to document this competence and knowledge, and that such engagement provides many possibilities for positive pedagogical actions. Drawing from both Vygotskian and neo-sociocultural perspectives in designing a methodology that views the everyday practices of language and action as constructing knowledge, the funds of knowledge approach facilitates a systematic and powerful way to represent communities in terms of the resources they possess and how to harness them for classroom teaching. This book accomplishes three objectives: It gives readers the basic methodology and techniques followed in the contributors' funds of knowledge research; it extends the boundaries of what these researchers have done; and it explores the applications to classroom practice that can result from teachers knowing the communities in which they work. In a time when national educational discourses focus on system reform and wholesale replicability across school sites, this book offers a counter-perspective stating that instruction must be linked to students' lives, and that details of effective pedagogy should be linked to local histories and community contexts. This approach should not be confused with parent participation programs, although that is often a fortuitous consequence of the work described. It is also not an attempt to teach parents "how to do school" although that could certainly be an outcome if the parents so desired. Instead, the funds of knowledge approach attempts to accomplish something that may be even more challenging: to alter the perceptions of working-class or poor communities by viewing their households primarily in terms of their strengths and resources, their defining pedagogical characteristics. Funds of Knowledge: Theorizing Practices in Households, Communities, and Classrooms is a critically important volume for all teachers and teachers-to-be, and for researchers and graduate students of language, culture, and education.

Book excerpt: In an interconnected world, global citizenship has become a goal of the Ontario Curriculum requiring an expansion of students’ sense of place from the local to global. However, little is known about the best methods to achieve this goal. Advocates of place-based education believe students should focus on the local, using it as a grounding point for larger issues (Greenwood, 2013; Smith& Sobel, 2010). Yet local places are becoming blurred in an interconnected world. Thus, begging the question, how can educators effectively situate students on a global landscape and with a global sense of place? Project-based learning is a teaching strategy that has seen a variety of benefits.This qualitative case study of a private elementary school in Southwestern Ontario explores what effects project-based learning has on students’ sense of place, particularly when utilizing multicultural and biodiversity themes. Qualitative data was collected through parent/guardian and teacher interviews, teacher anecdotal notes, and student projects over the period of two project-based learning assignments. Findings from this study identify implications for professional practice, offer recommendations for stakeholders, and recommendations for further research. Identifying what strategies best facilitate the expansion of students’ sense of place, not only benefits educators, but provides insight for parents, ultimately allowing students to better tackle the future interconnected world they inherit.

Enhancing student engagement has been something most teachers strive for throughout their careers. Project-based learning (PBL) is one method that can increase student engagement and motivation. PBL enhances engagement by giving students the ability to make choices regarding their educational experience. Increasing engagement and achievement can lead to changes in students' plans for their future by helping them find interests and abilities they were not previously aware of. I teach a population of Native American students. This demographic has traditionally had lower graduation rates than the national average. Increased interest in future plans can positively impact graduation rates for these students. My study will look at how working on a project grounded in their community changes students' perspectives on school and possibly their future. As such the purpose of this study is to determine whether participation in a community project increases engagement in the classroom for Native American students. The research question I am focusing on is to what extent does working on a community project increase student engagement and achievement and to focus further is the subquestion Does working on a Community Project impact students' plans for their future? My findings showed an increase in student engagement and a greater desire to achieve in school, as well as a more positive outlook in their future plans.
