Book Teacher and Administrator Perceptions of the K Plus Kindergarten Program and Its Effects on Literacy Development

Download or read book Teacher and Administrator Perceptions of the K Plus Kindergarten Program and Its Effects on Literacy Development written by Stephanie Gates and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examined a supplemental, literacy-focused kindergarten program for students found to be at-risk in reading. Specifically, this study explored teacher and administrator perceptions of the K Plus kindergarten program. Archival student data were collected from Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) 6th Edition benchmark tests to assess the extent in which student data support teacher and administrator perceptions of the program. To acquire perceptions, 13 kindergarten teachers, 12 first grade teachers, and 7 administrators affiliated with the K Plus program were asked to participate in an online survey with open-ended questions regarding program purposes, comparisons to the half-day kindergarten program, and student benefits. Subsamples of four teachers and two administrators were asked to participate in interviews to gain additional insights into perceptions of the K Plus program. Student DIBELS data were analyzed to determine whether or not student progress supported teacher and administrators perceptions. Results demonstrated that teachers and administrators have similar views on the purpose of the K Plus program supporting at-risk students in literacy development and believe the program benefits students. However, program logistics and management should be examined to ensure efficiency in program enrollment. Student performance increased in the second year of implementation. Student performance supported perceptions that the program positively impacts student achievement.

Book Transition to Kindergarten

Download or read book Transition to Kindergarten written by Dawn R. Lawless and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to analyze parent, teacher, and administrator perceptions on the transition to kindergarten activities at three elementary schools in a large, suburban school district in Pennsylvania. This research examined results and analyzed for trends based on the responses of 78 parent surveys, 21 parent follow up focus group participants, 9 teacher surveys, 7 follow up teacher focus group participants, 3 administrator surveys, and 3 follow up administrator interviews. The 3 surveys were very similar and each contained a Likert-scale response tool which listed a variety of transition activities along with open-ended questions. The follow up focus groups and interviews included open ended questions regarding transition to kindergarten at each of the schools and provided additional insight into participants' perception. Analysis of the data indicated that parents were pleased with their children's transition into kindergarten despite one key linkage, preschool to elementary school, not being strong. The findings also identified that negative parent perceptions were broad and varied and could be categorized as their desiring improved communication and the addressing of safety concerns. Teachers' perceptions, however, were less varied than parents and typically included the desire to dialogue with preschool personnel and to be compensated for transition work that would be best done in the summer. Administrators' perceptions mirrored the specific needs of their individual schools and depended upon their own definition of school readiness. All three participant groups expressed an interest in having teachers, students, and parents interact in a meaningful manner shortly before the start of school after class lists have been disseminated.

Book Preschool and Kindergarten Teachers Perceptions of the Academic Social and Behavioral Influences of Preschool Education on Kindergarten Readiness

Download or read book Preschool and Kindergarten Teachers Perceptions of the Academic Social and Behavioral Influences of Preschool Education on Kindergarten Readiness written by Kimberly A. Guyer and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions of preschool and kindergarten teachers on elements present in a preschool program that are impactful to a child's transition to kindergarten. A total of 23 preschool teachers and 35 kindergarten teachers in the southern central region of Pennsylvania completed the researcher-developed online survey. Four preschool teachers and four kindergarten teachers consented to semi-structured interviews. Participants in the study specifically addressed academic, social, and behavioral factors that influence preschool education on kindergarten readiness. The participants noted that although students attended a preschool, there were significant gaps when entering kindergarten. Participants also noted a steady increase in students struggling to stay focused on tasks, which has led to increased behaviors in the classrooms. Participants shared that parental involvement was a significant factor linked to student success in the classroom. The participants described an overall concern of increased complexities in their roles as preschool or kindergarten teachers and the correlation with student achievement. Recommendations include suggestions for further research in the area of connecting local preschool programs with local kindergarten programs, developing ways to enhance parental involvement, exploring the perceptions of the building administrators, and promoting collaboration between preschool programs and school districts.

Book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Kindergarten Students Literacy Preparation in Early Childhood

Download or read book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Kindergarten Students Literacy Preparation in Early Childhood written by Tammy M. Chrin and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of both parents and teachers concerning how well prepared students were when they entered their first year of formal schooling in kindergarten, as well as the efforts taken by parents when preparing their children for entrance to kindergarten. Information was also gathered to determine if any of the kindergarten children took part in any formal preschool programming prior to entering kindergarten. Study participants included parents and teachers of kindergarten students. Participants completed an electronic survey concerning the effectiveness of kindergarten students' literacy preparation in early childhood. The parent survey measured parental understanding of how to promote literacy skills during early childhood, as well as parental practices for introducing their children to print literacy and oral language in early childhood. The teacher survey measured the perception of the effectiveness of parental practices utilized when preparing children for kindergarten. A follow-up parent focus group and teacher interviews were also conducted to gather more information regarding perceptions of kindergarten students' literacy preparation in early childhood. Results from the data showed that there was strong agreement among all participants that early exposure to print literacy and oral language assisted in preparing children for kindergarten. However, responses indicated that the everyday practices of some parents did not support adequate development of print literacy and oral language during early childhood. There appeared to be a disconnect present between parents' understanding and practice. Additionally, teachers reported experiencing kindergarten classrooms that included children who possessed a wide range of abilities and skills.

Book Effects of Increased Class Size on Kindergarten Literacy Achievement and Teacher Perception

Download or read book Effects of Increased Class Size on Kindergarten Literacy Achievement and Teacher Perception written by Kristina Hoffman-Brown and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the difference between class size on student literacy achievement utilizing district-wide kindergarten student theme assessment scores at the end of first, second, and third trimester. Student achievement was measured by the district's theme assessment scores on four areas of literacy skills. The specific literacy skills examined in this study included 1) uppercase letter identification, 2) lowercase letter identification, 3) high-frequency word identification, and 4) rhyming skills. Teacher perceptions were also explored though the use of teacher surveys and interviews to determine how teachers perceived the increase in class size and its effect on their instructional practices, student-teacher interaction, and teaching behavior with their classroom. This study revealed statistically significant differences in student achievement and class size. The study's quantitative and qualitative data found that students who were taught during class size increase performed just as well, if not better, on literacy theme assessments than students who were taught during class size reduction. The study's data, however, found that when class sizes increased other important aspects of instruction were greatly impacted. The findings of this study also indicated that there was a strong need for reduced class size to increase teachers' job satisfaction and performance. The quantitative data were represented in a comparison study with the use of a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Book Teachers Perceptions of Full day Kindergarten and the Impact on Student Achievement

Download or read book Teachers Perceptions of Full day Kindergarten and the Impact on Student Achievement written by Suzanne Theresa Magee and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine teacher perceptions of full-day kindergarten and its impact on student achievement. A total of 59 teachers from three suburban school districts in Pennsylvania completed surveys containing both Likert scale and open-ended questions. Moreover, three regular education teachers and one special education teacher partook in semi-structured interviews in order to gain more insight into teacher perspectives. This study specifically focused on the long-term academic achievement in reading when comparing a full-day kindergarten program to a half-day kindergarten program. Additionally, the research focused on the advantages and disadvantages of both programs including emotional, behavioral, and social growth. Instructional practices were also studied to determine if they differed within each program. An overwhelming majority of participants agreed that full-day kindergarten provided the support needed to be successful students throughout their school career considering the increased demands placed on children. Participants also indicated that although there should not be a difference in instructional practices between either program, a full-day provides students the opportunity to practice these skills. Participants also noted that when teachers are given a full-day there is a significant amount of time that can be devoted to differentiated instruction which leads to academic gains . Most teachers indicated that it was not the longer day that made the difference academically, but how the teacher used that additional time that resulted in sustained success.
