Book A Teacher s Guide to Working with Paraeducators and Other Classroom Aides

Download or read book A Teacher s Guide to Working with Paraeducators and Other Classroom Aides written by Jill Morgan and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2001-02-15 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paraeducators--also known as teacher aides, teaching assistants, and instructional assistants--are playing an increasingly important role in schools. Most teachers, however, have never been trained to work effectively with other adults in their classrooms. In A Teacher's Guide to Working with Paraeducators and Other Classroom Aides, Jill Morgan and Betty Y. Ashbaker provide straightforward advice and focused activities that can help forge a productive working relationship between teachers and paraeducators. The authors cover key topics related to working with and supervising paraeducators, including how to assign responsibilities, communicate, monitor quality of work, provide on-the-job training, and create a feedback loop. Tips from practicing teachers explain ways to find the time to effectively supervise paraeducators. The authors discuss how the supervisory techniques involved in working with paraeducators are similar to--and different from--those that teachers use with students. The authors give concise suggestions for translating the information to the your classroom; fill-in-the-blank forms outline self-directed steps for improving in select areas. As both a practical workbook and a thoughtful reflection of the authors' experiences in working with teachers and paraeducators, this book is an indispensable resource for any teacher who wants to create a successful instructional team. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A groundbreaking history of 175 years of American education that brings the lessons of the past to bear on the dilemmas we face today—and brilliantly illuminates the path forward for public schools. “[A] lively account." —New York Times Book Review In The Teacher Wars, a rich, lively, and unprecedented history of public school teaching, Dana Goldstein reveals that teachers have been embattled for nearly two centuries. She uncovers the surprising roots of hot button issues, from teacher tenure to charter schools, and finds that recent popular ideas to improve schools—instituting merit pay, evaluating teachers by student test scores, ranking and firing veteran teachers, and recruiting “elite” graduates to teach—are all approaches that have been tried in the past without producing widespread change.

  • Author : James C. Garland

Download or read book Saving Alma Mater written by James C. Garland and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s public universities educate 80% of our nation’s college students. But in the wake of rising demands on state treasuries, changing demographics, growing income inequality, and legislative indifference, many of these institutions have fallen into decline. Tuition costs have skyrocketed, class sizes have gone up, the number of courses offered has gone down, and the overall quality of education has decreased significantly. Here James C. Garland draws on more than thirty years of experience as a professor, administrator, and university president to argue that a new compact between state government and public universities is needed to make these schools more affordable and financially secure. Saving Alma Mater challenges a change-resistant culture in academia that places too low a premium on efficiency and productivity. Seeing a crisis of campus leadership, Garland takes state legislators to task for perpetuating the decay of their public university systems and calls for reforms in the way university presidents and governing boards are selected. He concludes that the era is long past when state appropriations can enable public universities to keep their fees low and affordable. Saving Alma Mater thus calls for the partial deregulation of public universities and a phase-out of their state appropriations. Garland’s plan would tie university revenues to their performance and exploit the competitive pressures of the academic marketplace to control costs, rein in tuition, and make schools more responsive to student needs. A much-needed blueprint for reform based on Garland’s real-life successes as the head of Miami University of Ohio, Saving Alma Mater will be essential for anyone concerned with the costs and quality of higher education in America today.
