Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help the children in your life protect themselves with these groundbreaking age-appropriate mindfulness techniques. Mindful awareness works by enabling you to pay closer attention to what is happening within you—your thoughts, feelings, and emotions—so you can better understand what is happening to you. The Mindful Child extends the vast benefits of mindfulness training to children from four to eighteen years old with age-appropriate exercises, songs, games, and fables that Susan Kaiser Greenland has developed over more than a decade of teaching mindful awareness to kids. These fun and friendly techniques build kids’ inner and outer awareness and attention, which positively affects their academic performance as well as their social and emotional skills, such as making friends, being compassionate and kind to others, and playing sports, while also providing tools to manage stress and to overcome specific challenges like insomnia, overeating, ADHD, hyper-perfectionism, anxiety, and chronic pain. When children take a few moments before responding to stressful situations, they allow their own healthy inner compasses to click in and guide them to become more thoughtful, resilient, and empathetic. The step-by-step process of mental training presented in The Mindful Child provides tools from which all children—and all families—will benefit.

This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meditation is one of the best tools we can offer children to help them cope with the intensity of their feelings and ease the pressures in their lives - among family, with friends and at school. It gives even very young children power over their thinking and emotions through enhanced self-understanding and is perhaps even more valuable in helping adolescents to navigate the emotional peaks and valleys of the transition from childhood to adulthood. This book explains the varying techniques for working with children in different age groups (from five to eighteen) and shows how the benefits of meditation can help in a range of ways: from relieving shyness, anxiety and tension to reducing hyperactivity, aggression and impatience. Meditation has also proved helpful when treating asthma, insomnia and depression, and in improving concentration, establishing emotional balance and enhancing imagination and creativity.

Download or read book Teach the Children Meditation written by Saly L. Harper and published by 1st World Publishing. This book was released on 2003-03-31 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people dream of a world filled with peace andkindness. I believe that a key that will unlock the door tothat dream is teaching children, ours and others, tomeditate. Wouldn?t it be wonderful to see children not inany particular religious or cultural setting, meditating justto be peaceful? What a gift it would be to our children, ourselves and our communities to open this magic doorof the inner self to our children. Some religions and spiritual communities in thiscountry teach meditation as a way to know God andourselves. Yet, the children are not taught to meditate, atleast not in any systematic way. (Yoga or TM ?Transcendental Meditation ? are two exceptions.)In the following chapters you will find a planneddesign to entice a child to open the magic door of selfthrough the practice of meditation. This book is like aseries of lesson plans designed to teach meditation toindividuals and groups of children of all ages. Theseinstructions can be used by parents, teachers and caregivers even if they have never meditated. There are many types and styles of meditations discussedin this book. You may find you want to use others withwhich you are more familiar. If you choose to vary or addto the methods presented, be willing to take the time touse a framework and follow the steps leading through the process. The plans described here will make it easier foryou to create a successful routine for developing an effec-tivemeditation process with children and teens. You may ask: Why do I need to teach meditation orneed a plan to follow? If you have meditated on a regularschedule from before your child?s birth and not let thebirth interfere with that meditation schedule; and if yourchild has watched you do so; and if that child has joinedyou from time to time by imitation, or invitation, orboth; and if you?ve encouraged the child, with discussionand invitation to join you; then, you don?t need a plan.Your life style is the plan.People from some eastern cultures grow up in this typeof environment. Their lifestyle and culture support themeditation process. In these countries, adults oftenmeditate regularly, and children observe, and imitate thispractice. Few people in western cultures experience thatkind of example. However, with a bit of patience, prepa-ration,and a willingness to accept meditation as a dailypriority, we can enjoy this practice and the accompanyingpeace it brings to our lives and those of our families. This may sound like a lot of work, following a plan andmaking all the preparations, to sit quietly for just a fewminutes a day. But stop and ask yourself, do you neces-sarilyfollow the practices that could provide you with abetter lifestyle just because you believe in them? If youbelieve it is wise and good for you to meditate and thatyou will probably benefit from doing so, will you do it?Will you teach your children to do it? If the answer is yes, then wonderful, you probably don?t need this book. But if you are like most of us and you need the external disci-plineof a plan, some steps to follow to lead you whereyou want to go, then this book is for you!Having a plan and using organization and structure areonly means to an end. This book offers a plan within astructure that works for me and for those I have taught. It takes very little time to learn this plan. Give it a chanceand you?ll soon be meditating with your sons and daugh-ters.The benefits are nothing short of claiming a spacefor your soul, and the soul of your child, to grow in. Hereis where giving and receiving become one. When teaching meditation, parents come as bearers ofpeace and gentleness to their children. You will beteaching and learning how to make a space in your livesfor something very precious. There is no doubt in my mind that you can do it. Don?tbe afraid to try it. Do not be impatient with yourself. Ifyou skip a day or get side tracked, take a deep breath andstart again.Peace begins within each individual heart and spreads outto encompass all the world. The ?Peace Song? song says,?Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.?It is always true as a parent, that as we teach ourchildren we teach ourselves. It is the child?s gift to us. Letthe fact that you picked up this book be a special sign toyourself. A sign of willingness, of desire for peace and ofyour love of a child.

Download or read book Teacher Under a Microscope written by Robert Rose and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-09-20 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though the incidents occurred in 1978, TEACHER UNDER A MICROSCOPE examines ongoing issues in education through the eyes and ears of trained observers and evaluators. They observe, comment, and critique everything I say and do. The intake and exit interviews explore my philosophy of education as well as my comments and responses to their questions about what I actually did and why I did it. The conflicts between a disturbed principal (who was backed by the District) and me demonstrate the lack of balance of power in the schools. One of my main contentions is about the necessity of teacher autonomy. You see how I fight for it, not for me, but to better serve and teach my students. There are some basic questions asked and answered through the Observers interviews and protocol and the daily and weekly journals or commentaries I was asked to make. A few times I give you some overlapping of the same incidents as seen by the Observer and then in my journal so you can see them in greater depth. First. What should life in the schools be like for the children and their caretakers teachers and support personnel? Second. What are the basic goals of public education and how should they be accomplished? Third. How much freedom or autonomy should a teacher have or needs to properly achieve these goals? With the accountability movement gaining strength coupled with powerful back-to-basics and safe schools components, it appears the public believes schools should emphasize basic skills. To assure this happening testing is the rage to demonstrate that the students are achieving higher standards of skills and as a way to evaluate the effectiveness of each teacher. Testing is reasonable and necessary as one way to determine what a student has learned and a teacher has taught. It is one way. It does not take the place of all the complex and useful things a teacher has learned about a student during the year. Often, because a student is learning English or is enduring serious emotional distress or has some type of learning handicap, the teacher is in the best position to know whether a test assesses accurately his skill levels, knowledge, or progress. When a single test is the only determiner of whether a child passes or fails, injustices occur. The same is true when the test results of the class are the only determiners of the teachers ability or success. The threat of being fired for the poor performance of a class will discourage even good teachers from taking classes or individual children who have academic or behavior problems. I have already read about and seen instances of teachers trying to insure they have more than their share of good and capable students. This stacking of a class will most affect new teachers (and their students) who have always suffered trial by fire. It makes good sense for the experienced teachers not to jeopardize their career, but is it ethical or good educational practice? The positive aspect of mass testing and accountability is that more students are being exposed to a much wider variety of useful academic skills In many poverty areas the students, because of alleged or believed weak academic abilities, were limited in what was taught to them. Asking teachers to carefully examine what they teach and expecting them to know why as well as what they are teaching is a positive step for the profession... It didnt just happen. Through years of trial and plenty of errors, I gradually found my teaching style. Through eclectic reading I brought into my classroom ideas and concepts from many disciplines. I found I was not an original thinker, but I was very good at taking the ideas of more gifted people and applying them in classroom situations. I took many concepts and techniques used for adults in the Human Potential M
