Book Inside Your Calculator

Download or read book Inside Your Calculator written by Gerald R. Rising and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-08-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncover the mysteries that lie within your calculator This remarkable book explores the simple internal calculatorprocesses—algorithms and programs—that tell us, forexample, that the cosine of 56? is 0.5591929035. Using carefullyconstructed diagrams and figures, the author effectivelydemonstrates how calculator keys compute powers, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry functions, while also providing insights intosimple programming, the conversion between decimal and binarynumeration, and perhaps most importantly, the structure of ournumeration systems. Many people believe that the processes thatdrive calculators demand advanced mathematical concepts; however, this book proves that a minimal understanding of algebra andgeometry is all that is needed to follow the step-by-stepexplanations of how scientific calculators work. Inside Your Calculator: From Simple Programs to SignificantInsights is a complete and multifaceted exercise in criticalthinking. This book features: A detailed explanation of how to use a graphics calculator andprogram basic functions A discussion of the history of mathematics when appropriate, which provides a foundation for further learning Fundamental mathematical lessons and interesting applications ofpre-calculus mathematics A thorough review of the fundamentals of programming, algebra, and geometry needed to gain insight into why the algorithms workand how the results are meaningful in our lives While the simultaneous use of a calculator is not needed to gaininsight into how the algorithms work, those who do have aprogrammable graphics calculator can experiment with the programspresented in the book. These programs may be used on TI-84 andTI-83 calculators, and additional information for other TexasInstruments calculators as well as the Casio FX series is availableon the book's related web site. As a result of over fifty years of award-winning teachingexperience in both high school and college classrooms, Dr. Risinganticipates and answers potential questions from readers, and hesuccessfully brings this subject alive in an illuminating andentertaining way. This book is therefore not only ideal forundergraduate mathematics majors as either a primary orsupplemental text, but it also appeals to anyone with an interestin mathematics and its ideas. Book The Brown Center Report on American Education

Download or read book The Brown Center Report on American Education written by Paul Diperna and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brown Center on Education Policy conducts research on topics in American education, with a special focus on efforts to improve academic achievement in elementary and secondary schools. The center seeks to inform policymakers at all levels of government, to influence the course of future educational research, and to produce a body of work not only valuable to policymakers and scholars, but also parents, teachers, administrators, taxpayers, school board members, and the general public. This annual report card analyzes the state of American education using the latest measures of student learning, uncovers and explains important trends in achievement test scores, and identifies promising and disappointing educational reforms. Unlike similar reports intended solely for government use, the Brown Center annual report card is written for an audience of parents, teachers, and policymakers.

Book Calculator in Upper Primary Mathematics

Download or read book Calculator in Upper Primary Mathematics written by Dr Yeap Ban Har and published by Shing Lee Publishers Pte Ltd. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly technological world, mathematics curricula around the world have responded accordingly. Tedious computation, which is efficiently and accurately done using a simple calculator as well as more powerful software programmes, can no longer be the focus of any mathematics curriculum. In Singapore, the curriculum was recently revised to focus on the development and improvement of students’ intellectual competence (Singapore Ministry of Education 2006). The ability to visualize and to look for connections are given more emphasis than the ability to do tedious computation. Research in the use of calculators in mathematics teaching and learning has generally concentrated on two areas. First, there have been metaanalyses of the effects of calculator use on student achievement. Second, there are several studies on teachers’ beliefs on calculator use in the classroom. The metaanalyses of the effects of calculator use have found that there were improvements in computational, conceptual and problem-solving skills as well as in attitudes towards mathematics (Ellington, 2003; Hembree & Dessart, 1992). A study on instructional leaders showed that the majority of them agree with the research findings (Yeo, 2008). A study on practising teachers found that a majority of them did not believe that calculator use lowers students’ achievement (Carter, Ferrucci & Yeap, 2008). In a press release to explain the move to introduce the use of calculators in examination in upper primary levels, it was announced that calculator use can facilitate exploration to discover patterns and to make generalizations as well as make the use of authentic data possible (Singapore Ministry of Education, 2007). Without calculator use, the repetitive computations needed for students to discover patterns make this important aspect of mathematics learning tedious. Authentic data often involve numbers which may be difficult for students to deal with without calculators.

Book How did the use of calculator affect the students attitude towards learning mathematics

Download or read book How did the use of calculator affect the students attitude towards learning mathematics written by Kwan Lung Chan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, grade: 2.7, Education University of Hong Kong (Department of Asian and Policy Studies - Education University of Hong Kong), course: CUM3002 Comparative Curriculum and Pedagogy Studies, language: English, abstract: The implementation of using calculators in the Irish Junior Certificate Mathematics curriculum and examinations brought about discussions about its impact on students’ performance and learning attitudes. To compare the difference before and after implementation, we adopted experimental-type studies to find out the influence. There are two groups of Grade 9 students: the pre-intervention group and the post-intervention group. The research discovered that phase II students (using the calculators) got better Mathematics results and they thought using calculators can reduce the frequency of making mistakes. Despite such contribution, phase I students thought using calculators make students lazy. Based on our research, compulsory use of calculator in Mathematics education is a good decision, as it improved students’ Mathematics performance and students became more motivated to learn. The most important reason of this is because students think using calculator can help them save more time.
