Book excerpt: Excerpt from Table Talk: Opinions on Books, Men, and Things I have succeeded in the execution of it, must be left to others to decide. I am also afraid of having too frequently attempted to give a popular air and cfl'ect to subtle distinctions and trains Of thought; so that I shall be considered as too metaphysical by the careless reader, while by the more severe and scrupulous in quirer my style will be complained of as too light and desultory. To all this I can only answer that I have done not what I wished but the best I could do; and I heartily wish it had been better. A collection made in this manner for a foreign European market by the author himself, may also serve as the best intro duction (the one nearest the writer's wishes were he living) of a series of his works to the American public. The second part alluded to was never published at Paris, but it is not difficult to supply it on similar principles Of selection, from the various scat tored writings of the author. This will be attempted in the second part of the Table Talk, to be published immediately, with no fear of the result in the production of a brilliant volume of Essays. The volumes of the Round Table, and Sketches and Essays, published by the author's son, will be left untouched for. To the same person one is bound, more or less, to repeat oneself.”“Or from different lovers to the same correspondent,” suggested the Philosopher. “It would be interesting to observe the response of various temperaments exposed to an unvaried influence. It would throw light on the vexed question whether the qualities that adorn our beloved are her own, or ours lent to her for the occasion. Would the same woman be addressed as 'My Queen!' by one correspondent, and as 'Dear Popsy Wopsy!' by another, or would she to all her lovers be herself?”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Table Talk: Essays on Men and Manners Death, old age, are words without a meaning, a dream, a fiction, with which we have nothing to do. Others may have undergone, or may still undergo them - we bear a charmed life, which laughs to scorn all such idle fancies. As, in setting out on a de lightful journey, we strain our eager sight forward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Still Life of the Middle Temple: With Some of Its Table Talk During a long membership of the Middle Temple, I have been repeatedly asked to write 'A Book on the Inn' from its social point of view, a task apparently never before attempted. I had just this one qualification, that entering after many years passed in other pursuits, I at once grasped a certain continuity of Middle Temple life with old Cambridge days, and was able to realize to some extent college times over again. A regular attendant at hall and church, many points there-fore presented themselves to me as having a special interconnection and mutual self-dependence, which I have attempted to bring out in the following pages. Book Middle Temple Table Talk

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Middle Temple Table Talk: With Some Talk About the Table Itself Readers of my former book have invariably concluded their letters to me with "Give us some more." I hope they may find this practical reply equally amusing. But I trust no more of them will sit up all night to finish it: three tell me they did so in the case of the last volume - two of them married men, too. The greater part of this book is, of necessity, desultory and disconnected, but the first two chapters are framed differently. The first records the survival of Templar Knights' ceremonies in our Middle Temple Hall, due to the incoming Law Students taking over the staff and establishment, as well as the house, of the dissolved Order. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deliciae Literariae: A New Volume of Table-Talk Perhaps the title of this little volume may need some apology; and indeed it is rather the Publishers' choice than the Author's. He would have preferred the name of Nugae, as less likely to subject him to any charge of vanity, and for that, in Camden's words, the book cannot challenge any higher title either for matter or manner of handling, being only the rude rubble and out-cast rubbish of more serious wor But he was reminded, that Dcliciae bore nearly the same meaning, and that he might warn his readers that he uses it in its more modest signi fication of toys or phantasies. That was the time of day; but now youhave really the advantage of me, when had I the pleasure of seeing you? My memory really betrays me as to your name, (and well it is, if not betrayed for thee). I quite forget your face. This is the language of the almanack of other years, of the Angelo out of date; but it is more the altered features of the case than of the face which produce this species of oblivion, of friend remembering not.
