Book Te piti Manawat Gorge

Download or read book Te piti Manawat Gorge written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Te Apiti Manawatu Gorge Te Au-rere-a-te-tonga is a celebration of the natural, physical and spiritual elements of one of New Zealand's special places. The Manawatu Gorge lies between the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges of the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, linking the Manawatu to its west with the Hawke's Bay region to its east. Through Te Apiti runs the Manawatu River. This book explores all dimensions of Te Apiti, from the way it formed naturally, to its occupants - past and present, and including non-human organisms and humans alike - to how it has been modified over time for the benefit of the people of the region and wider New Zealand. Detailed maps, historic photographs and reproductions of documents as well as a host of contemporary images complement a rich text woven by the threads of more than 15 contributors. The journey of producing this book has been long and required huge commitment over the past seven years to get the book to the presses. During that time, much has been revealed and is now documented here in this beautiful publication and we can rest comfortably knowing that the information can be cherished by future generations. It is a true testament to all those who have played a role in its production. Coinciding with the completion of this book, and arguably in perfect sequence, a major storm event in 2017 resulted in the permanent closure of the road in 2018, drawing an end to an era for transport through Te Apiti as we have known it for just over 100 years.

Book Palmerston North

  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Palmerston North written by George Conrad Petersen and published by Raupo. This book was released on 1973 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Palmerston North is known to New Zealanders today and to its increasingly numerous overseas visitors as the urban focus of the prosperous and beautiful Manawatu farmlands; and as a university city of 52,000 inhabitants; and as a model of farsighted planning by enterprising pioneers. Visitors and even residents seldom pause to consider that the bustling city, the orderly countryside, have been carved out from the great primeval forests that reigned the land until a bare one hundred years ago. How all this was done, and through what dogged persistence, and by what concerted efforts by the pioneers, is here recounted by Dr George Petersen, himself a citizen of Palmerston North for fifty-two years and an historian of the Scandinavian pioneers who played so vital a part in establishing the city and its surrounding pastures of the Manawatu. This is the proud record of a century of development. It deserved to be written, as it has been written, as a tribute to a city's Maori and Pakeha progenitors and a challenge to their descendants."-Dust jacket.
