Download or read book Catastrophe Theory written by A. Okninski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-06-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide a straightforward introduction to chemical applications of the catastrophe theory. It is primarily intended for chemists interested in placing chemical reactions in the broader context of non-linear science, but it has a practical relevance for scientists in general. Catastrophe theory deals with those non-linear phenomena in which a continuous change in the control parameters results in a discontinuous alteration of a characteristic quantity of the system. The author discusses the origins of catastrophe theory, giving examples of occurrences in the areas of physics, chemistry and biology. Elementary theory and non-chemical applications are also described. The chemical kinetics and methods of analysis of chemical kinetic equations arising from elementary and generalized catastrophe theories are reviewed. Finally, the theory is applied to analyse and classify phenomena associated with the stability loss that may occur in chemical reactions. The book contains over 100 figures and an extensive subject index.

Book Mechanics Today

Download or read book Mechanics Today written by S. Nemat-Nasser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics Today, Volume 6 is part of a series of book that compiles various materials about mechanical engineering. The coverage of the title includes theoretical and applied mechanics and applied mathematics. The text first details the general framework within which macroscopic overall response parameters of continuous bodies. Next, the selection covers the integration of theory of singularities and the calculus of variations. The third chapter deals with the elastic-plastic response of a structure to cyclic loading. The title also talks about the mixed boundary-value problems in mechanics. The book will be of great use to both student and professional mechanical engineers.

Book Perspectives of Nonlinear Dynamics Volume 1

Download or read book Perspectives of Nonlinear Dynamics Volume 1 written by E. Atlee Jackson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of physical, chemical, biological, or fluid systems generally must be described by nonlinear models, whose detailed mathematical solutions are not obtainable. To understand some aspects of such dynamics, various complementary methods and viewpoints are of crucial importance. In this book the perspectives generated by analytical, topological and computational methods, and interplays between them, are developed in a variety of contexts. This book is a comprehensive introduction to this field, suited to a broad readership, and reflecting a wide range of applications. Some of the concepts considered are: topological equivalence; embeddings; dimensions and fractals; Poincaré maps and map-dynamics; empirical computational sciences vis-á-vis mathematics; Ulam's synergetics; Turing's instability and dissipative structures; chaos; dynamic entropies; Lorenz and Rossler models; predator-prey and replicator models; FPU and KAM phenomena; solitons and nonsolitons; coupled maps and pattern dynamics; cellular automata.

Book Overlapping Tendencies in Operations Research Systems Theory and Cybernetics

Download or read book Overlapping Tendencies in Operations Research Systems Theory and Cybernetics written by BILLETER and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 0.1 Gaps in Optimizing A comparison of the levels of development of Operations Research, Simulation Technique and Optimal Control Theory appears to gain increasing interest. Operations Research Sciences achieved very high mathematical standards and solved a great amount of important optimization problems, mainly at the level of management of private corporation and civil or military government tasks, however, these achievements are seldom incorporated in the mathematical curriculum of modern universities. Nevertheless, Operations Research seems to have failed in solving long range or strategical problems as they arise in any broader social, economical or political context (MUller-Merbach, 1976). Also for the weakest task, namely that of improving theory building, system simulation works as an optimization tool. Simulation models of large complex systems, like socio economical or political ones, failed until now to fit large empirical data bases. This was, in fact, one of the few serious objections against the form in which Forrester solved some problems modelling and simulating urban and world de velopments (Forrester, 1969; Forrester, 1971; IEEE-SCC October 197o; IEEE-SMC April 1972; Mass, 1974; Schroeder, 1975).

Book Catastrophe Theory and Bifurcation Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Catastrophe Theory and Bifurcation Routledge Revivals written by Alan Wilson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical models have long been used by geographers and regional scientists to explore the working of urban and regional systems, via a system where the equilibrium point changes slowly and smoothly as the parameters change slowly and smoothly. However, this all changed with the advent of catastrophe theory and bifurcation, which enabled the development of models where a quite sudden change in the position of the equilibrium point results from a slow, small, smooth change in one or more parameters. First published in 1981, this reissue of Professor Wilson’s classic study outlines the implications of these mathematical models for geography and regional science, by way of a survey of contemporary applications.

Book Coupled Instabilities In Metal Structures 2000 Cims 2000

Download or read book Coupled Instabilities In Metal Structures 2000 Cims 2000 written by Dinar Camotim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-08-21 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of coupled instabilities is a fascinating field of research with a wide range of practical applications, particularly in the analysis and design of metal structures. Despite the excellent body of existing results concerning coupled instability structural behaviour, this situation has not yet been adequately translated into design rules or specifications. In fact, only to a small extent do modern design codes for metal structures take advantage of the significant progress made in the field. This book, which contains all the invited general reports and selected papers presented at the Third International Conference on “Coupled Instabilities in Metal Structures” (CIMS '2000), should provide a meaningful contribution towards filling the gap between research and practice.

Book excerpt: Catastrophe Theory was introduced in the 1960s by the renowned Fields Medal mathematician René Thom as a part of the general theory of local singularities. Since then it has found applications across many areas, including biology, economics, and chemical kinetics. By investigating the phenomena of bifurcation and chaos, Catastrophe Theory proved to
