Download or read book Taxonomic Studies of the Subgenus Amphora Cleve of the Genus Amphora Bacillariophyceae in Japan written by Tamotsu Nagumo and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Amphora is one of the larger genera belonging to the family Naviculaceae and includes about 350 taxa. It is a widespread genus with a few species occurring in freshwater and brackish water, and many species in marine habitats. Members of the genus are clearly distinguished from related genera. The characteristic, strongly dorsiventral frustule has raphe systems which lie close to the ventral margins of the valve. There is no taxonomic revision and clear definition of the genus Amphora based modern taxonomic criteria covering both freshwater to marine species. This study deal with the taxonomy the subgenus Amphora, for freshwater and marine species in Japan. In addition to the characters observable by light microscopy, characters revealed mainly by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, such as raphe system and the shape of dorsal marginal costa, were employed to establish the taxonomy of the taxa considerd herein. Eighteen taxa are recognized in this work. First, each taxon was observed in detail using SEM to expand current knowledge of its fine structure. Taxonomic identification was then confirmed with reference to type material or other historic collections. Among the taxa investigated here, four are new to science, one is a new combination and one is a new name. Ten of the taxa investigated here (Amphora barrowiana (Patr. et Freese) Nagumo comb. nov., A. copulata (Kützing) Schoeman et Archibald, A. hiromuii Nagumo sp. nov., A. inariensis Krammer, A. liriope Nagumo sp. nov., A. macedoniensis Nagumo sp. nov., A. ovalis Kützing., A. pediculus (Kützing) Grun., A. rotunda Skv., A. sibirica Skv. et Meyer) are from freshwaters habitats. Three (A. arenicola (Grun.) Cleve, A. javanica Schmidt, A. libyca Ehr.) are from brackish-water habitats and five (A. gigantea Grun., A. immarginata Nagumo sp. nov., A. marina W. Smith, A. plativalvata Nagumo nom. et stat. nov., A. schmidtii Grun.) are from marine habitats.

Download or read book Diatom Assemblages from Sphagnum Bogs of the World written by Maxim S. Kulikovskiy and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in the series of volumes that will be devoted to the Eurasian Sphagnum bog diatoms. Sphagnum bogs are unique ecosystems. The main ecological drivers in these systems are Sphagnum mosses. They originate under organic, acidic conditions with low content of available electrolytes. Diatomological studies of the Sphagnum bogs of Russia and adjacent countries began in the 1950s. However, these papers include the floristic information on only a few dozen smaller bogs. Large-scale floristic, taxonomic and biogeographic investigations have not been conducted so far, although this gap has been reduced by a few recent studies. Diatom assemblages from Sphagnum bog Nur, situated in the northern mountainous region of Mongolia, are subject of the study. Nur is a unique ecosystem in Mongolia because it is the only known large Sphagnum bog throughout this region. There are no earlier studies on the algal flora of this ecosystem. A total of 242 diatom taxa, belonging to 48 genera have been identified from samples taken from different habitats of this bog. Light and scanning electron microscope analyses resulted in the description of one new genus, Boreozonacola, and 18 new species from the genera Pinnularia, Stauroneis, Naviculadicta, Fragilaria, Eunotia, Boreozonacola, Caloneis, Chamaepinnularia, and Neidium. Additionally, 11 new taxonomic combinations are suggested. Species treatments include descriptions, synonymies, size dimensions, and relevant literature. For some species historical information is also provided.

Download or read book Diatoms written by F. E. Round and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-04 with total page 1208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a wide-ranging introduction to the diatoms together with an illustrated description of over 250 genera. Diatoms are important as perhaps the commonest group of autotrophic plants on earth and are abundant in all waters and on soils and moist surfaces. The introduction describes the diatom cell in detail, the structure of the wall (often extremely beautiful in design), the cell contents and aspects of life cycle and cell division. The generic atlas section is the first account of diatom systematics since 1928 (Karsten in Engler and Prantl: Die Nauturlichen Pflanzenfamilien) and each generic description is accompanied by scanning electron micrographs to show the characteristic structure. Most of the latter have been prepared specially for this work from the authors' own collections. The Diatoms will be the standard reference work on the group for years to come and is an essential reference volume.

This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this volume study and describe the valve morphology of 108 taxa, representing 75 distinct species, in the genera Amphora and Halamphora from aquatic environments in the United States and Japan. Amphora Ehrenberg ex Kützing and Halamphora (Cleve) Levkov are taxonomically diverse genera of raphid diatoms. In addition to being species rich, their ecology is equally diverse, with representatives of the genera present in coastal and inland waters from the tropics to the arctic. Of the 75 species, nearly one-half of them (33) are described as new, including 4 from the genus Amphora and 29 from the genus Halamphora. Eight species are transferred from Amphora to Halamphora and new combinations proposed. All taxa considered herein have been cultured, and 4 genes (the nuclear encoded 18S and 28S rDNA and the chloroplast encoded rbcL and psbC genes) have been sequenced for each. This combination of morphological and molecular data lays an important foundation for future research of the taxonomy, ecology and systematics of the Amphora and Halamphora floras of coastal and inland waters.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A fascinating look at how consumers perceive logos, ads, commercials, brands, and products.”—Time How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.
Download or read book Benthic Diatoms from Mediterranean Coasts written by Irene Álvarez-Blanco and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a taxonomic study of benthic diatoms collected from coastal rocks in seven northern Mediterranean sites (Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey) in spring of 2010. An iconographic catalogue of high-quality SEM and light microscopic images, plus detailed taxonomic, nomenclatural and bibliographic information, are provided as a practical reference for further taxonomic and floristic studies on 91 plates. 120 representative diatom taxa, among them several poorly known species, selected from 23 samples, are described in terms of their abundance. The authors provide detailed information on the type material of each diatom species, a list of synonyms, a comparison of morphometric data provided in the literature (in tables) and a series of iconographic SEM-images which illustrate the taxon’s morphological variability, plus an exhaustive list of references. Nomenclature, taxonomy and systematic position of the described taxa are updated. Eight taxa are described as new to science and another seven are nomenclaturally recombined. Eight taxa are new records for the Mediterranean Sea and for five taxa Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images are presented for the first time. An exhaustive reference list and indices of taxa conclude this volume and make it a valuable source of information for biologists working on benthic diatoms in general, not only of the Mediterranean region.
