Book The Ideologies of Taxation

Download or read book The Ideologies of Taxation written by Louis Eisenstein and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1961, The Ideologies of Taxation is a classic of taxationÑa long-unavailable volume that remains uniquely applicable today. Louis Eisenstein starts from the idea that the tax system in a democracy is shaped by competing factions, each seeking to minimize its burden. Because few people are convinced by appeals to self-interest, factions must give reasons, which are skillfully elaborated into systems of belief or ideologies. EisensteinÕs aim is to examine (and debunk) three major ideologies used to justify various reforms of the tax system. The ideology of ability holds that taxes should be apportioned based on ability to pay and that this is properly measured by income or wealth. The ideology of deterrents is concerned with high taxes on private enterpriseÑlow and flat taxes are desired lest the wealthy reduce their work efforts and savings. The ideology of equity is focused on equal treatment of similarly situated individuals. Eisenstein shows, with sharp wit and an instinct for the jugular, how each of these ideologies is plagued with contradictions, incompleteness, and, in some cases, self-serving claims.

Book American Taxation American Slavery

Download or read book American Taxation American Slavery written by Robin L. Einhorn and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-05-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all the recent attention to the slaveholding of the founding fathers, we still know remarkably little about the influence of slavery on American politics. American Taxation, American Slavery tackles this problem in a new way. Rather than parsing the ideological pronouncements of charismatic slaveholders, it examines the concrete policy decisions that slaveholders and non-slaveholders made in the critical realm of taxation. The result is surprising—that the enduring power of antigovernment rhetoric in the United States stems from the nation’s history of slavery rather than its history of liberty. We are all familiar with the states’ rights arguments of proslavery politicians who wanted to keep the federal government weak and decentralized. But here Robin Einhorn shows the deep, broad, and continuous influence of slavery on this idea in American politics. From the earliest colonial times right up to the Civil War, slaveholding elites feared strong democratic government as a threat to the institution of slavery. American Taxation, American Slavery shows how their heated battles over taxation, the power to tax, and the distribution of tax burdens were rooted not in debates over personal liberty but rather in the rights of slaveholders to hold human beings as property. Along the way, Einhorn exposes the antidemocratic origins of the popular Jeffersonian rhetoric about weak government by showing that governments were actually more democratic—and stronger—where most people were free. A strikingly original look at the role of slavery in the making of the United States, American Taxation, American Slavery will prove essential to anyone interested in the history of American government and politics.

Book Taxing the Rich

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kenneth Scheve
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2016-03-29
  • ISBN : 1400880378
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Taxing the Rich written by Kenneth Scheve and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking history of why governments do—and don't—tax the rich In today's social climate of acknowledged and growing inequality, why are there not greater efforts to tax the rich? In this wide-ranging and provocative book, Kenneth Scheve and David Stasavage ask when and why countries tax their wealthiest citizens—and their answers may surprise you. Taxing the Rich draws on unparalleled evidence from twenty countries over the last two centuries to provide the broadest and most in-depth history of progressive taxation available. Scheve and Stasavage explore the intellectual and political debates surrounding the taxation of the wealthy while also providing the most detailed examination to date of when taxes have been levied against the rich and when they haven't. Fairness in debates about taxing the rich has depended on different views of what it means to treat people as equals and whether taxing the rich advances or undermines this norm. Scheve and Stasavage argue that governments don't tax the rich just because inequality is high or rising—they do it when people believe that such taxes compensate for the state unfairly privileging the wealthy. Progressive taxation saw its heyday in the twentieth century, when compensatory arguments for taxing the rich focused on unequal sacrifice in mass warfare. Today, as technology gives rise to wars of more limited mobilization, such arguments are no longer persuasive. Taxing the Rich shows how the future of tax reform will depend on whether political and economic conditions allow for new compensatory arguments to be made.

Book Taxation in Crisis

Download or read book Taxation in Crisis written by Dimitrios D. Thomakos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive guide to modern day taxation issues. It presents a thorough overview of many of the crucial aspects of applied taxation and current tax systems, and presents evidence that supports taxation as an important policy issue requiring immediate address globally. Contributions seek to address the core question of how to design a tax policy mix that can serve primarily efficiency, growth and possibly equity goals at a time where fiscal spending, for many economies, is not a viable option. Chapters provide a historical perspective on taxation, then go on to cover aspects of the modern theory of optimal taxation and tax design and provide valuable international perspectives on current tax practices and much required tax reforms. Empirical analysis on taxation and related economic data help the readers to understand how data-based observations and results are linked to the theory of taxation, and more importantly economic growth, before offering appropriate policy prescriptions. This book will be of interest to scholars and practitioners interested in learning more about taxation and why it matters today in the global economy.

  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Taxation written by David A. Dieterle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging and accessible book is a must-read for every taxpayer, young and old. It explores the many forms of taxation; how taxes are created, collected, and spent; and why certain aspects of taxation are so controversial. "In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Benjamin Franklin wrote this now-famous quote more than 200 years ago, and taxation remains just as important (and inevitable) today as then. Taxes are a fact of life for almost everyone, and the public goods and services they pay for are enjoyed by all citizens. While taxes are undeniably necessary, the specifics of what should be taxed, who should pay taxes, and at what rate remain hotly debated by economists, government officials, and regular citizens. The first in Greenwood's new Student Guides to Business and Economics series, Taxation gives readers an in-depth yet reader-friendly look at one of economics' foundational concepts. Using simple language and relevant real-world examples, the book explores the different forms of taxation, the necessary components of any tax, how taxes are created and collected, and much more. It also highlights contemporary controversies related to taxation, including whether or not "sin taxes" actually discourage unwanted behaviors like smoking and how best to simplify the tax filing process.

Book Global Taxation

Download or read book Global Taxation written by Philipp Genschel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Taxation investigates the global transition to modern taxation from the 18th century to today. Modern taxation refers to the broad-based tax instruments that allowed for the emergence of big government as we know it today, including, most prominently, income taxes and general consumption taxes. The volume draws on a new historical dataset of tax introduction worldwide to map the global spread of modern taxes descriptively and to explore its correlates analytically. It makes four contributions to the literature. First, it corrects a pervasive Western bias in historical political economy and fiscal sociology. Most of this literature focuses heavily on the tax policy of advanced democracies in Europe. The chapters of this volume explore how far Western theories and insights travel to non-Western contexts. Second, the volume mitigates a recency bias in much of the macro-quantitative literature in comparative political economy and public finance. The chapters investigate whether insights travel across time from recent to more distant periods of observation. Third, the volume compensates for the substantive preoccupation of extant research with the personal income tax and the VAT by extending the analysis to other important tax instruments: the corporate income tax, the inheritance tax, non-VAT sales taxes, and social security contributions. Finally, the volume goes beyond the prevalent methodological nationalism in fiscal sociology and comparative political economy. It shows that non-sovereign tax introductions were common in colonial and imperial settings and compares analytically how the logic of these non-sovereign introductions differed from sovereign ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A professional businessman shows you how to avoid taxes the honest way in this self-help guide to building and keeping wealth. Wilfred Don observes that tax collectors from long ago were regarded as the lowest of the low as they charged and collected taxes from the poorest, who represented most of society. They kept large portions of taxes for themselves while contributing to the rulers. Today we call these lobbyists, who influence our lawmakers and leaders. The tax system in place today allows self-employed individuals to keep more of their money. By studying the tax code, you can: · lower your taxable income; · get tax breaks by investing in real estate; · make your money grow more than inflation. The author highlights how important it is to get corporate tax rates and realize capital gains instead of earning money and paying personal income tax rates. You must hold your wealth in corporations, equities, and real estate and avoid paying yourself ordinary income at all costs. Leverage the author’s decades of experience as a business owner to achieve your dreams with the insights in The Hole in the Code.

Download or read book Tax the Rich written by Morris Pearl and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerfully persuasive and thoroughly entertaining guide to the most effective way to un-rig the economy and fix inequality, from America's wealthiest “class traitors” The vast majority of Americans—71 percent—believe the economy is rigged in favor of the rich. Guess what? They’re right. How do you rig an economy? You start with the tax code. In Tax the Rich! former BlackRock executive Morris Pearl, the millionaire chair of the Patriotic Millionaires, and Erica Payne, the organization’s founder, take readers on an engaging and enlightening insider’s tour of the nation’s tax code, explaining exactly how “the rich”—and the politicians they control—manipulate the U.S. tax code to ensure the rich get richer, and everyone else is left holding the bag. Blunt and irreverent, Tax the Rich! unapologetically dismantles the “intellectual” justifications for a tax code that virtually guarantees destabilizing levels of inequality and consequent social unrest. Infographics, charts, cartoons, and lively characters including “the Werkhardts” and “the Slumps” make a complicated subject accessible (and, yes, sometimes even funny) and illuminate the practical reforms that can put America on the road to stability and shared prosperity before it’s too late. Never have the arguments in this book been more timely—or more important.

Book Fair Not Flat

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward J. McCaffery
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-09-15
  • ISBN : 0226555666
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Fair Not Flat written by Edward J. McCaffery and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows that the current tax system is unfair. Some of the richest people in America pay no tax, while a huge share of the tax burden falls on the rest of us. A mere glance at the tax code confirms that it is far too complex, with volumes of rules that no ordinary person could possibly comprehend. What is to be done? Some conservatives have called for a so-called flat tax. But a flat tax is not necessarily a simple tax, and "flat" means "more" for most taxpayers: a rise in middle-class taxes to finance tax cuts for the rich. Is there another choice? In clear, easy-to-understand language, Edward J. McCaffery proposes a straightforward and fair alternative. A "fair not flat" tax that is consistent and progressive would tax spending, not income and savings. And if it were collected at its lower levels through a national sales tax, most people would not have to file a return. A supplemental tax on spending for the wealthiest individuals would make the national sales tax progressive. Under McCaffery's system, a family of four would pay no tax on their first $20,000 in spending, and 15 percent on the next $60,000. Only the few families who spend more than $80,000 a year would be subject to the supplemental tax. Necessities would be taxed less than ordinary and luxury items. No one would be taxed directly on savings. The estate and gift or so-called death tax would be abolished, for the simple reason that dead people don't spend. The "fair not flat" tax would fall on heirs when and as they spend their good fortune. Perhaps best of all, most Americans would not have to fill out tax returns. Simpler, more efficient, fairer, and more reflective of America's current social values, McCaffery's "fair not flat" tax could help get us out of the tax mess that politicians and special interests have gotten us into, improving the whole country in the process. Read Fair Not Flat to find out how. “In Fair Not Flat, Mr. McCaffery lays out the case for a consumption tax. He does so in a reader-friendly way, presenting his argument with very few footnotes, equations or technical terms. The consumption of the book, so to speak, is not at all taxing. And its argument is well worth pondering.”—Bruce Bartlett, Wall Street Journal

Book Rendering Unto Caesar

Download or read book Rendering Unto Caesar written by Robert L. Savage and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, it seems that our system of government with all of its marvelous and major strengths does have at least a few areas where we citizens must take action. One such area is our tax system. It is simply too difficult to envision that under today's circumstances, enough of our politicians can ever find the necessary will and resolve to sacrifice even some of their acquired power and position. Can a better tax system that is more fair and effective be successfully executed? Will prices we pay remain at or very near current levels? Robert Savage introduces a new tax system for the United States of America that does just that and leaves prices we pay essentially unchanged. It's a system that would be the least intrusive on each citizen's freedom, as well as the fairest way for each of us to pay our own share of government's costs. Tired of complex tax forms and extensive disclosures of personal information? This proposed system would not require that. In fact, it would allow citizens to easily see in one place how much of our money our various government bodies are spending. It would promote large and small businesses to produce good jobs, not to mention the consumer products and services we need and want in our lives. In Rendering Unto Caesar: The Fairest Tax, the proposed plan is broken down in easy-to-understand terms, showing the transition that could be done over a four year time span. Whether you're a financial novice or guru, this book will reveal a fair tax system that is both understandable and acceptable to the great majority of our fellow citizens.
