Book excerpt: Virtually everyone in this country is directly affected by the material in this chapter. Whether you are single, married, cohabitating with someone of the opposite or same sex, a child, an elderly person, someone going through a divorce or separation, rich or poor, there are numerous tax issues and tax disparities that impact your daily lives. Over the past 90 or so years, the taxation of the family unit has undergone numerous changes, resulting in unequal treatment of significant numbers of citizens. The evolution of the tax law of the family unit provides us with an opportunity to view the constant interplay and conflict between federal and state laws. Keeping with the theme of this book, this chapter will focus on some of these major inequalities, many of which have received only sparse public attention and are generally unknown to the ordinary taxpayer.

Download or read book Tax Policy Women and the Law written by Ann Mumford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tax policy frequently targets the choices that women face in many aspects of their lives. Decisions regarding working away from home, having children, marrying, registering a partnership or cohabiting with a partner all entail tax consequences. The end of the twentieth century saw progress in women's legal and social equality, but many governments began to increase their reliance on the tax system as a means of influencing the choices that women make. The juxtaposition of this instrumentalist deployment of tax with persisting economic inequality for women is the starting point for this book. Employing a range of theoretical approaches, and grounding its investigations in sociological theory and cultural philosophy, it provides the foundation for a comparative, contextual consideration of the issues that arise at the intersection of women, tax policy and the law.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hearing, chaired by Representative Patricia Schroeder, was held to examine historical trends in family structure and family values in light of the recent political debate over family values and their effect on poverty. Testimony and prepared statements were given by Representative Schroeder; Representative Gerry Sikorski; Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan; Dr. Allan Carlson of the Rockford Institute, Rockford, Illinois; and Professor Stephanie Coontz of Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington. Participants maintained that historical shifts in family composition challenge conventional wisdom, in that family disruption was common in colonial times and that family size has continually decreased. It was also maintained that government assistance has failed to keep up with changing needs, in that the federal government in the past provided more effective assistance to facilitate home ownership and support health care, education, and improved working conditions. Government programs that once reduced poverty have fallen short in the 1990s, due to the fact that the federal government has dedicated an increasingly smaller percentage of the budget to child and family programs.
