Book excerpt: This is the first collection of records the researcher should turn to in any genealogical investigation in the Buckeye State. Taking the place of pre-1820 census records, this work presents a county-by-county list of Ohio settlers and residents from about 1800 to 1825. Along with the 1801 tax list of the Virginia Military District, it contains the names of taxpayers listed in various county tax rolls, and it also contains lists of original proprietors and settlers (taken from other sources), names of holders of military warrants, voters' lists, householders' lists, occasional lists of Revolutionary soldiers, and lists of resident proprietors. The work is arranged by county, with multiple tax lists arranged chronologically thereunder. There is at least one tax list given for each of the seventy-five counties covered, the combined lists naming about 50,000 taxpayers. Each county tax list is accompanied by a brief history of the county's formation. Researchers should note that tax lists were not available for the following counties: Auglaize, Carroll, Erie, Fulton, Lake, Lucas, Noble, Ottawa, Paulding, Summit, Vinton, and Wyandot. Our reprint combines the original 1971 publication and the 1973 index, both first published by the Ohio Genealogical Society.

Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth volume in a series of land tax records, which offer a wealth of valuable genealogical data presented in a convenient table format with entries listed alphabetically by surname within each section. This volume covers the period 1875 to 1895. It includes four complete years: 1875, 1880, 1885 and 1895, including the tax for public school and county purposes. Taxes for county purposes were collected for eight years between 1852 and 1861 and began again in 1880. The 1890 Land Tax has been published in a separate book, Northampton County, Virginia "1890" Land Tax. Between 1875 and 1880 the author noticed several inconsistencies such as in 1875 a James T. Ashby Est. 167 1/3 acres and in 1880 a John T. Ashby Est. with the same acreage. There are also discrepancies in number of acres in several areas as well. It is interesting to note the sale of Cape Charles lots between 1885 and 1895. A facsimile reprint of an original map that shows the 644 Cape Charles lots is included. Tables include: 1875 Land Tax by John C. Darby, Assessor (Capeville District); 1875 Land Tax by G. R. Jacob, Assessor (Eastville District); 1875 Land Tax by Geo. H. Thomas, Assessor (Franktown District); 1880 Land Tax by John T. W. Custis, Com: Rev: 1885 Land Tax by Geo. R. Jacob, Com: Rev: 1895 Land Tax by Zoro. Book Confessions of a Tax Collector

Download or read book Confessions of a Tax Collector written by Richard Yancey and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve years ago, Richard Yancey answered a blind ad in the newspaper offering a salary higher than what he’d made over the three previous years combined. It turned out that the job was for the Internal Revenue Service -- the most hated and feared organization in the federal government. So Yancey became the man who got in his car, drove to your house, knocked on your door, and made you pay. Never mind that his car was littered with candy wrappers, his palms were sweaty, and he couldn’t remember where he stashed his own tax records. He was there on the authority of the United States government. With "a rich mix of humor, horror, and angst [and] better than most novels on the bestseller lists" (Boston Sunday Globe), Confessions of a Tax Collector contains an astonishing cast of too-strange-for-fiction characters. But the most intriguing character of all is Yancey himself who -- in detailing how the job changed him and how he managed to pull himself back from the brink of moral, ethical, and spiritual bankruptcy -- reveals what really lies beneath those dark suits and mirrored sunglasses. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Book Virginia Tax Records

Download or read book Virginia Tax Records written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is primarily a compilation of articles pertaining to tax records--a term used rather freely to permit inclusion of such records as personal property tax lists, tithables, poll lists, land tax lists, and rent rolls. Like census records, tax records have the distinction of placing people in a particular location at a definite time and identifying them in relation to their households and property, thus providing irrefutable evidence of their existence and places of habitation. These records probably represent only a fraction of the early tax records of Virginia, but they do constitute a large proportion of the surviving records and refer to some 20,000 individuals in all. Their consolidation in this volume, with an extensive index, will certainly facilitate research in this field. The mass of "tax records" assembled for this volume relate to the following Virginia counties (or Episcopal parishes): Accomac, Amelia, Brunswick, Caroline, Charles City, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Elizabeth City, Essex, Frederick, Gloucester, Henrico, Isle of Wight, James City, King William, (King William Parish), King & Queen, Lancaster, Lunenburg, Middlesex, Nansemond, New Kent, Norfolk, Northampton, Orange, Pittsylvania, Prince George Princess Anne, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Surry, Warwick, Westmoreland, Williamsburg (city), York, (York-Hampton Parish).
