This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book-Taxation in Ghana: A Fiscal Policy Tool for Development- is the product of considerable tax research from 1943 to 2018, spanning a period of 75 years and grounded in knowledge and concepts; as well as, applications through an extended period of tax practice, teaching and learning; combined with international exposure. A lot of insights have been illuminated based on lessons learned and drawn from other countries, including the United States of America to enrich the contents. Against the backdrop of the dynamic nature of taxation and fiscal policy. Most of the existing taxation books in Ghana focused on tax practice. So, the purpose of this book is to bridge the taxation scholarship gap. In addition to traditionally-treated topics in most taxation books in Ghana, the novelty in this book is the inclusion of important topics on tax planning, tax reforms, and tax administration, and many more. As a result, specific recommendations have been proffered for the consideration of policy makers in developing countries. References and Acts of Parliament; supported by appendices have been provided for further studies on the subject. A true story of the first major oil discovery in Ghana by Mr. George Yaw Owusu with M. Rutledge McCall published 2017 in the United States of America: In Pursuit of JUBILEE was used to enrich the discussion on petroleum (Oil and Gas) in Chapter 48 of this textbook. Book The Orphaned Capital

Download or read book The Orphaned Capital written by Carol O'Cleireacain and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's capital is in a fiscal and political crisis. By 1995 the District of Columbia did not have the cash to pay its bills and faced a growing operating deficit. It was effectively shut out of the capital markets and at least three of its government agencies were in receivership. On any given day, 30 percent of the police vehicles were in the shop for repairs and 25 percent of the school buses were inoperable. Nor were adequate funds coming in: property assessors were making up the rules as they were undervaluing the tax base. In April 1995 Congress, beginning to come to grips with the situation, placed the fiscal control of the city in the hands of a presidentially appointed Control Board. The survival of the nation's capital is a matter of national concern. The Control Board and the chief financial officer have outlined the path to balancing the budget by 1999. Once the District government can deliver services efficiently, the issue of how they should be financed will need to be addressed. That is the focus of this book. Carol O'Cleireacain provides background for understanding the present situation, focusing on the revenue components and offering a realistic menu of revenue options for long-term, ongoing budget balance. She addresses such questions as: What is the "norm" for a city the size of Washington? What is the appropriate sharing among the federal government, District residents, and the region? How much compensation should be paid for the huge amount of tax-exempt property and the enormous number of nonprofit organizations in the capital? What taxes can the District impose fairly, collect efficiently without distorting decisions of individuals and businesses about where to locate? O'Cleireacain concludes that the District's fiscal crisis is the result, in part, of economic and demographic trends reflecting the dilemmas of central cities and their suburbs nationwide; in part, the historically flawed relationship between Congress and the local government. But at the heart of the District's fiscal crisis is its special status as the nation's capital. All other American cities benefit from state aid for welfare, Medicaid, prisons, higher education, juvenile justice, and a wide range of highway, infrastructure, and other capital investments. The District does not; it has to tax its residents in order to provide state-type services. Ongoing budget balance in D.C. will require a realignment of spending and revenue responsibilities by the federal government acting as the state parent to the nation's orphaned capital.

  • Publisher : Penn State Press

Book excerpt: How has the Internet been changing our lives, and how did these changes come about? Nathan Newman seeks the answers to these questions by studying the emergence of the Internet economy in Silicon Valley and the transformation of power relations it has brought about in our new information age. Net Loss is his effort to understand why technological innovation and growth have been accompanied by increasing economic inequality and a sense of political powerlessness among large sectors of the population. Newman first tells the story of the federal government’s crucial role in the early development of the Internet, with the promotion of open computer standards and collaborative business practices that became the driving force of the Silicon Valley model. He then examines the complex dynamic of the process whereby regional economies have been changing as business alliances built around industries like the Internet replace the broader public investments that fueled regional growth in the past. A radical restructuring of once regionally focused industries like banking, electric utilities, and telephone companies is under way, with changes in federal regulation helping to undermine regional planning and the power of local community actors. The rise of global Internet commerce itself contributes to weakening the tax base of local governments, even as these governments increasingly use networked technology to market themselves and their citizens to global business, usually at the expense of all but their most elite residents. More optimistically, Newman sees an emerging countertrend of global use of the Internet by grassroots organizations, such as those in the antiglobalization movements, that may help to transcend this local powerlessness.

Book The Politics of Bad Ideas

Download or read book The Politics of Bad Ideas written by Bryan Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-29 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly anticipated addition to the "Great Questions in Politics" series offers a provocative argument about the persistence of bad ideas in shaping American economic policy. The result of a collaboration between political scientist Bryan D. Jones and economist Walter Williams, The Politics of Bad Ideas is indispensable reading for any study of American government, public policy, or economic and budgetary analysis. The Politics of Bad Ideas examines why, over the last quarter century, bad economic ideas -- such as cutting taxes without cutting spending -- have become so influential in shaping government policies. Using in-depth research and trenchant political and economic analysis, the book explores why those bad ideas continue to survive despite overwhelming evidence that they in fact cause damage to the federal government's long-term fiscal stability and the American economy.
