Download or read book Ghostwalker written by Leslie Patten and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2024-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leslie Patten had seen grizzly bears, wolves, coyotes, deer, elk, and many other species in her years living next to Yellowstone National Park. Yet, like most visitors, she had never seen a mountain lion—the charismatic yet enigmatic predator also known as a cougar, panther, or puma. She had only detected their ethereal presence on the landscape, which left her pondering where they were and what they were up to. After five years, through her serendipitous encounters with their tracks and scat, the burning question remained: What is the essence of the mountain lion? To understand an animal no one sees, Patten conducted more than one hundred interviews with biologists, conservation groups, state wildlife managers, houndsmen, and professional trackers. Slowly, a picture of the lion’s elusive nature emerged. Ghostwalker presents a complete picture of mountain lions in the West today, uncovering the intimacies of their secretive lifestyle as well as the issues they face in our changing world.

Download or read book Saga Tales written by Charles E. Miller and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that Miller classifies his tales as “historical” requires an explanation. One of them, his accounts of the first murder recorded in Scripture, is historically accurate in its spirit and its conscription of evil. His second “historical” tale narrates the story of Noah and the construction of his ark, precedent to the global flood. That Noah, by faith alone, constructed his massive ark in the middle of a rainless desert marked him for “strange” and for the ridicule of his village. The balance of the tales deal with the histories of their central characters, and for that reason, the author includes them in his parameter of “historical”. This collection marks his fourth volume of short stories.

Book excerpt: WHEN GOD IS FORSAKEN IDOLATRY WILL REIGN SUPREME WHEN IDOLATRY REIGNS SUPREME EVIL WILL FLOURISH WHEN EVIL FLOURISHES THE END IS NEAR Mike Hayden, writer and an avid outdoorsman, spent four weeks in the wilderness of the Bitterroot Mountains in Idaho, searching for a 209 year old Nez Perce Indian reported to be living there. When approached, the Indian, along with an Appaloosa horse and a mountain lion, would disappear. Hayden, a Native American historian, was there to glean historical information from the man. After one week the Indian materialized, along with his horse and a tawny mountain lion He said, My name is Cougar. While spending time together the duo discovered they were Kindred Spirits and held lengthy discussions about the dilemmas in paleface society. Over the years, the author spent time on Indian reservations in Canada, Dakotas and the Pacifi c Northwest. He lived for a month on the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho where he powwowed with Elders and fished for steelhead salmon on the Clearwater River at the precise shoals where Lewis & Clark first encountered the Nez Perce in 1805.
Download or read book Butterfly Chronicles written by Helen Lewison and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-03-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Butterflies are fragile and almost defenseless creatures but rely on a variety of strategy to protect them, blending into their environment so well it is almost impossible to detect them. I learned about pain and loss but my ability to take wing became my major defense. My father, an intellectual, arrived as a young man from Austria with a portfolio of plays, poetry and short stories. He spent his life in search of a dream to become a great writer that did not materialize. My quiet small mother was born in a small village in Hungary and she gave me the freedom to explore the world. Her warmth was my mainstay. In her eyes I could do no wrong. My silent melancholy father rarely talked. I grew up in h a home where conversation was restrained and I found myself doing all the talking. It became norm but I desperately needed to hear a sound even if it was only coming from my own lips. My brother, Morton, was an intelligent, composed gray eyed boy who also had a dream but death at the age of fourteen killed the dream and left me to grow up alone and lonely. I remember visiting Morton in the hospital as he lay foaming at the mouth in a coma. My life was never again the same. I was ten years old. I was friendly but had no real friends. I was lonely but did not spend much time alone. The beginning of my life was with no road map, no directions only following the scent of excitement, adventure and love. Watching a butterfly zigzag aimlessly across the meadow on a sunny morning, it could easily be taken for natures most carefree vagabond unhurried, unburdened, and even a little ditzy. But butterflies are purposeful, aggressive, sexually driven and smarter that most people think. When I was very little somebody asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up. I answered quiet emphatically; I want to be a dancing girl. Where it was luck, chance or karma, one way or the other I did become a dancing girl, dancing literally and metaphorically through life. Oh, how love played an extraordinary role in my life. I will always remember love, the highs, the lows, the pleasure, the pain, and ultimately the wonderment. Like the butterflies that use their sense of sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste to survive in the world. Flying is a major defense of butterflies. I soon stretched out my wings and my journey began.

Book excerpt: Winter has finally broken its hold over the Kingdom — but as the snows melt, trouble springs up in its place. A dark cloud hangs over Midlan: the army has retreated behind its high walls, not a word slips out from between its gates. And rumors swirl that the King has gone mad. Kael knows nothing of this: his sights are on the plains. But with his horrible luck following him wherever he goes, it doesn’t take long for his plan to unravel. He finds himself trapped in Gilderick's clutches and forced to work as a slave, laboring alongside the giants — who don’t exactly welcome him. In fact, he begins to suspect that some would rather see him dead. If Kael is going to have any chance to survive, he’ll have to come up with a new plan — and quickly. Meanwhile, Kyleigh finds herself locked in a sprint across the desert. Time presses against her: there is a force gathered in Whitebone that threatens to undo everything, should it reach the plains. But her pride blinds her to the dangers, and it isn't long before she and her companions are lost among the towering dunes. The strange magic of the sun drains their strength, misfortune nips at their heels, but they are determined to save their friends. And so they'll brave the desert's every peril — be it storms or cave trolls … or flesh-eating worms.
