Book excerpt: "Law cannot be treated as a discrete set of principles without a context ... we seek to examine and evaluate the context of Australian law."So the authors write of their book. This second edition is divided up into 3 parts:Part A of the book - Law in a Political Context - contains separate chapters on Liberalism and Formalism and the Rule of Law, plus a new chapter on Power.Part B - Law, Justice and Inequality - contains material on access to justice, litigation and the lawyers. The text has been revised to take into account the considerable changes in these areas in the past five years. Each chapter relates the material to the tension between the provision of justice and the creation and maintenance of inequality in our legal system. These themes are continued in the chapters that deal with gender, race and with the processes which influence the production of legislation.Part C -Law and Efficiency- introduces students to the economic analysis of law and to the relationship between justice and efficiency. As with the first edition, material and examples are selected which have relevance for first year students. All other chapters have been revised and updated to reflect current trends and issues. The Law Institute Journal (Vic) called the first edition:"A new and intellectually fertile way of introducing students to the study of law."Other reviewers saw it as "fascinating", "instructive", "thoroughly recommended" and "representing the new wave of thought about law and law teaching".

Book excerpt: Nina Reilly takes on the most dangerous and difficult case of her career in New York Times bestselling author Perri O’Shaughnessy’s latest thriller. An ingenious blend of forensic science, history, and gripping suspense, Unlucky in Law pits the tough but compassionate attorney against the most unbeatable adversary of all: the law. Nina has just received a last-minute call from her old boss and mentor in Monterey County, California, where she is enjoying the breathtaking scenery and spending time with her boyfriend, P.I. Paul van Wagoner. Klaus Pohlmann is in desperate straits and begs Nina to take over a seemingly unwinnable case: A luckless two-time felon named Stefan Wyatt has robbed a grave and made off with the long-buried bones of a Russian émigré. When he is caught and arrested, further devastating evidence found in the grave suggests that Stefan is guilty of a far more deadly crime. A young woman, a classmate of Stefan’s, has been killed, and he is accused of her murder. Now, as a result of California’s Third Strike law, Wyatt is looking at twenty-five years to life whether he’s convicted of grand theft or murder. Either way, he’s in big trouble. With her client’s blood DNA found in the dead woman’s apartment, Nina faces an uphill battle. Suspecting that her hapless client has been set up, Nina brings in a brilliant forensic pathologist who comes up with a startling theory about the case that could rewrite a crucial page of European history. As the evidence mounts against Nina’s client, Paul launches his own investigation into the shadowy past of the two-decades-old skeleton. But long-held secrets nearly get him killed and reveal a more insidious evil at work—and an extraordinary story dating back to tsarist Russia and the Romanov court. As Wyatt edges closer to the unluckiest verdict of his young life, Nina makes an astounding discovery that just might save her client—or expose a killer who could bury them all. Brilliantly imagined and compulsively readable, Unlucky in Law is a beguiling mix of wrenching drama and gripping action. And it is Perri O’Shaughnessy’s most accomplished novel to date.

Book The Law of the Rhythmic Breath

Download or read book The Law of the Rhythmic Breath written by Ella Adelia Fletcher and published by E-Kitap Projesi & Cheapest Books. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "BREATH IS LIFE." IS it wontedness and use, or perhaps, that unspeakably deadening factor thoughtlessness, that has robbed the pregnant aphorism " BREATH IS LIFE " of every atom of its profound significance? None has ever gainsaid it, yet to the mass of mankind it means no more than if one were to write omicron muf And to that suicidal mania, fear of fresh air and draughts, and its accompanying folly, flagrant neglect of the primal function of breathing, the world pays an annual tribute of at the lowest estimate a quarter million lives; all sacrificed to -preventable disease! Even without a regret for those sent thus prematurely through the " Gates Ajar," think of the crushing weight of sorrow this entails upon the world! Though not our loss, the sorrow affects all within its environment. But not alone the mass of humanity have been thus apathetic. Until the beneficial cult of deep breathing, a growth in rational doing and thinking of the present generation only, the man of science whose life work is to relieve human suffering equally ignored this flaring torch "BREATH IS LIFE," pointing unerringly to fundamental truths of being, but which throughout the centuries of Western civilization might as well have been a dark lantern. It is my grateful task nay, happy opportunity to prove to you that it is a torch of such wonderful illuminating power that man's electric searchlights should pale before it. It was a gain, a stalwart stride in the right direction, to call attention to the error of commonly fixed habits; but all that has yet been accomplished is little more than one drop of purity in a swamp of miasma. Busy people think they have too much to do to give attention to a function they have always supposed automatic, never dreaming of the subtle sources of disorder affecting its normal activity, and as subtly feeding and sowing disease. Also, to make a bad matter worse, in all the so-called " systems " of breathing taught, good, bad, and indifferent, the fundamental principle of rhythmic harmony has attracted little attention, and is rarely understood.
