Book excerpt: A communities creative response to natural disaster. The Wildfires that raged across our Scenic Rim and Lower Beechmont community during the Black Spring and Summer of 2019/2020 left homes, farmland, bushland, business, and spirits charred. After the fire, communities were firstly numb with shock and grief over what had been lost, but then this was transformed into a determination to both rebuild and honour resilience as a way to learn from the experience. The lived experience of fire ignited a deeper understanding of human connection and belonging to place. This sense of belonging and connection has been celebrated through community initiatives and projects such as the Regeneration - Bushfire Creative Recovery Project of which this book is but a part. It is our hope that this book shines a light on the important role art can play in supporting recovery, nurturing resilience, and celebrating regeneration.new life rises from the ashes that was once black and bare our experience connected us deeply as we gather around the fire to share we rise, we are strong we listen we belong We create We regenerateThe Regeneration - Creative Bushfire Recovery Project publication was compiled, designed, authored and edited by a publication team including Jessica Brown, Adi Brown, Tegan Carter- Mackenzie, Sarah Rose Gibson, Chryslyn Kennedy, Linda Munster, Katrina Walker.

Book World Disasters Report 2020 COME HEAT Or HIGH WATER

Download or read book World Disasters Report 2020 COME HEAT Or HIGH WATER written by IFRC and published by . This book was released on 2021-01-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how vulnerable the world was to a truly global catastrophe. But another, bigger, catastrophe has been building for many decades, and humanity is still lagging far behind in efforts to help communities and countries to adapt to the realities of it.The impacts of global warming are already killing people and devastating lives and livelihoods every year, and they will only get worse without immediate and determined action. The frequency and intensity of climatological events are increasing substantially, with more category 4 and 5 storms, more heatwaves breaking temperature records and more heavy rains, among many other extremes. Loss of natural resources, food insecurity, direct and indirect health impacts, and displacement are likewise on the rise. Many communities are being affected by concurrent and consecutive disasters, leaving them with little time to recover before the next shock arrives. But it doesn't have to be like this. The 2020 World Disasters Report argues that there has never been a better time to face up to climate disasters, because climate change won't wait for COVID-19 to be brought under control.

Book Political Leadership in Disaster and Crisis Communication and Management

Download or read book Political Leadership in Disaster and Crisis Communication and Management written by Hamish McLean and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of elected leaders in disaster management. Filling a significant gap in disaster literature, the authors take a pragmatic approach to the relationships between the public under threat, the operational response, and the interests and actions of elected officials. Key tactics are explored, from the ways operational managers strategically deal with unreasonable political demands to what disaster officials argue is the responsibility of elected officials at all levels of government – that is, to ensure vital life-saving information reaches the people who need it most. The book draws on case studies such as the mismanagement of public perceptions by President George W. Bush during Hurricane Katrina in the United States and the widely acclaimed, heartfelt messages delivered by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh during the 2010–11 South-East Queensland floods in Australia. Drawing on a series of interviews with senior disaster managers in ten countries, this book is highly relevant for students, scholars and practitioners interested in disaster communication.

Download or read book The Pyrocene written by Stephen J. Pyne and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative rethinking of how humans and fire have evolved together over time—and our responsibility to reorient this relationship before it's too late. The Pyrocene tells the story of what happened when a fire-wielding species, humanity, met an especially fire-receptive time in Earth's history. Since terrestrial life first appeared, flames have flourished. Over the past two million years, however, one genus gained the ability to manipulate fire, swiftly remaking both itself and eventually the world. We developed small guts and big heads by cooking food; we climbed the food chain by cooking landscapes; and now we have become a geologic force by cooking the planet. Some fire uses have been direct: fire applied to convert living landscapes into hunting grounds, forage fields, farms, and pastures. Others have been indirect, through pyrotechnologies that expanded humanity's reach beyond flame's grasp. Still, preindustrial and Indigenous societies largely operated within broad ecological constraints that determined how, and when, living landscapes could be burned. These ancient relationships between humans and fire broke down when people began to burn fossil biomass—lithic landscapes—and humanity's firepower became unbounded. Fire-catalyzed climate change globalized the impacts into a new geologic epoch. The Pleistocene yielded to the Pyrocene. Around fires, across millennia, we have told stories that explained the world and negotiated our place within it. The Pyrocene continues that tradition, describing how we have remade the Earth and how we might recover our responsibilities as keepers of the planetary flame.

Book excerpt: "Australia has recently experienced a number of large scale and devastating natural disasters, including catastrophic bushfires, far reaching floods, and damaging storms. Natural disasters are a feature of the Australian climate and landscape and this threat will continue, not least because climate change is making weather patterns less predictable and more extreme. Such events can have personal, social, economic and environmental impacts that take many years to dissipate"-Introduction.
