Book excerpt: Libraries are full of travel books on Africa, but Malachite Lion is a narrative of an unplanned adventure, a modern odyssey that recounts the mysteries and paradoxes of East Africa. The book describes a journey through the crowded, bustling streets of Nairobi, into the wilds of Masai Mara and Amboseli, to ancient, mystifying Mombasa, electrifying Malindi and the sensuous Seychelles. Much of our experience with today’s East Africa is limited by what we see in edited natural history documentaries and sensational news stories. For most of us the place is a fantasy, as unreal as Sindbad's Baghdad. Richard Modlin’s exciting account of his travels through Kenya and the Seychelles will dispel some of the apprehensions that cloak this strange land and its people. His experiences as a scientist and academic have provided him with the skills to interestingly record his provocative observations, interactions, experiences, feelings and thoughts, and transport the reader beyond the confines of a tour bus. Descriptions of his encounters with the variety of indigenous people and wildlife are poignant, humorous and heartwarming. Malachite Lion is a definite read for anyone who has ever dreamed of traveling to East Africa realistically and vicariously.

Book The Federal Design Dilemma

Download or read book The Federal Design Dilemma written by Pamela J. Clouser McCann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The level of government responsible for implementing policies affects intent, services provided, and ultimate outcomes. The decision about where to locate such responsibility is the federal design dilemma faced by Congress. Taking a new approach to this delegation and decentralization, The Federal Design Dilemma focuses on individual members of Congress. Not only are these legislators elected by constituents from their states, they also consider the outcomes that will result from state-level versus national executive branch implementation of policies. Here, Pamela J. Clouser McCann documents congressional intergovernmental delegation between 1973 and 2010, and how individual legislators voted on decentralization and centralization choices. Clouser McCann traces the path of the Affordable Care Act from legislative proposals in each chamber to its final enactment, focusing on how legislators wrestled with their own intergovernmental context and the federal design of health insurance reform in the face of political challenges.

Book Developer s Dilemma

Download or read book Developer s Dilemma written by Casey O'Donnell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of work—including the organization of work and the market forces that surround it—through the lens of the collaborative practice of game development. Rank-and-file game developers bring videogames from concept to product, and yet their work is almost invisible, hidden behind the famous names of publishers, executives, or console manufacturers. In this book, Casey O’Donnell examines the creative collaborative practice of typical game developers. His investigation of why game developers work the way they do sheds light on our understanding of work, the organization of work, and the market forces that shape (and are shaped by) media industries. O’Donnell shows that the ability to play with the underlying systems—technical, conceptual, and social—is at the core of creative and collaborative practice, which is central to the New Economy. When access to underlying systems is undermined, so too is creative collaborative process. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in game studios in the United States and India, O’Donnell stakes out new territory empirically, conceptually, and methodologically. Mimicking the structure of videogames, the book is divided into worlds, within which are levels; and each world ends with a boss fight, a “rant” about lessons learned and tools mastered. O’Donnell describes the process of videogame development from pre-production through production, considering such aspects as experimental systems, “socially mandatory” overtime, and the perpetual startup machine that exhausts young, initially enthusiastic workers. He links work practice to broader systems of publishing, manufacturing, and distribution; introduces the concept of a privileged “actor-intra-internetwork”; and describes patent and copyright enforcement by industry and the state.

Book The Great Health Dilemma

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Dye
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2021-05-27
  • ISBN : 0192595466
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book The Great Health Dilemma written by Christopher Dye and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proverbial benefits of prevention over cure are self-evident and yet we are reluctant to invest in staying healthy. Resolution of this age-old dilemma begins with a timeless truth: the benefits of good health come at a cost; prevention is not better than cure at any price. That logic leads to the testable hypothesis that prevention should be favoured when an imminent, high-risk, high-impact hazard can be averted at relatively low cost. Application of this idea helps to explain why cigarette smoking is still common place, why the world was not ready for the COVID-19 pandemic, why billions still do not have access to safe sanitation, and why the response to climate change has been so slow. Much more money and effort are invested in health promotion and prevention today than is commonly thought, but the enormous avoidable burden of illness is reason to seek ways of investing further. The Great Health Dilemma: Is Prevention Better than Cure? provides a framework for investigating prevention and illustrates the application of principles with practical examples. Chapter 1 discusses the history of prevention and draws on examples over a 5000-year period from neolithic times to the present day. Chapter 2 considers the principles of prevention and the societal conditions that affect how individuals, governments, and countries react to issues linked to public health. Chapters 3 to 8 explore the efficiency of prevention in a variety of settings including financing health services, pandemic preparedness, tuberculosis and hiv/aids control, non-communicable diseases, sanitation and climate change. Drawing together the evidence, chapter 9 provides suggestions for promoting good health and preventing disease in the future.

Book The Dilemma of Sustainability in the Age of Globalization

Download or read book The Dilemma of Sustainability in the Age of Globalization written by Mohamed El-Kamel Bakari and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dilemma of Sustainability in the Age of Globalization: A Quest for a Paradigm of Development offers an exhaustive overview of the different political, social, economic, and cultural circumstances that paved the way for the inception of sustainable development. It particularly traces the evolution of this project in an unpropitious context of neo-liberal capitalism and globalization. By means of an in-depth critical comparative analysis of the two phenomena of sustainable development and globalization, this book highlights aspects of both their divergence and convergence on issues such as development, man-nature relationship, and society. This distinctive approach pinpoints the theoretical and factual aspects of clash and affinity between globalization and sustainability and spotlights some potential harmonization between the two on different levels. On the whole, this book covers a few gaps in the contemporary literature that heightened the need for analysis of the viability of implementing the project of sustainable development in a context of neoliberal capitalism. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of its topic, a holistic approach is utilized throughout this book, integrating historical, literary, economic, political, and scientific material. The first part of this book is largely based on a critical comparative analysis of the two vying paradigms of development by means of a thorough juxtaposition of their theoretical and ideological underpinnings and backed up by lucid examples, statistics, and case-studies. In later sections, this book provides an analysis and discussion of both the extrinsic and intrinsic obstacles to promoting sustainability in the current socio-economic paradigm of development, and closes by offering glimpses of hope for the future of humankind by underlining the potential of new initiatives to revive sustainable development in the 21st century.

Book The Prostate Cancer Dilemma

Download or read book The Prostate Cancer Dilemma written by Nelson N. Stone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of this field, and will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians, surgeons and researchers with an interest in early prostate cancer. The book reviews new data about genetic markers, transperineal mapping biopsy and mpMRI, how to apply each of these technologies in patients with elevated PSA, when a prior prostate biopsy performed by the standard TRUS method is negative and in cases where low risk disease is already diagnosed, how to differentiate those men who might harbor more aggressive disease from those who do not. Over 75% of newly diagnosed prostate cancer meets the criteria for low risk disease which has created a dilemma for both patients and clinicians. Active surveillance programs have been initiated and are reviewed. How the new technologies impact surveillance programs is addressed. Clinical stage designation is updated and a new intra-prostatic staging system is discussed. Prostate biopsy techniques utilizing transrectal ultrasound, transperineal mapping, elastography and mpMRI are compared. Finally, utilization of this new technology in the application of focal therapy is reviewed. The Prostate Cancer Dilemma will serve as a very useful resource for physicians and researchers dealing with, and interested in this challenging malignancy. Chapters are written by experts in their fields and include the most up to date scientific and clinical information as well as links to procedural video content.

Book China s Struggle for Status

Download or read book China s Struggle for Status written by Yong Deng and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the Cold War the People's Republic of China found itself in an international crisis, facing severe problems in both domestic politics and foreign policy. Nearly two decades later, Yong Deng provides an original account of China's remarkable rise from the periphery to the center stage of the post-Cold War world. Deng examines how the once beleaguered country has adapted to, and proactively realigned, the international hierarchy, great-power politics, and its regional and global environment in order to carve out an international path within the globalized world. Creatively engaging with mainstream international relations theories and drawing extensively from original Chinese material, this is a well-grounded assessment of the promises and challenges of China's struggle to manage the interlacing of its domestic and international transitions and the interactive process between its rise and evolving world politics.
