Dans notre étude, nous avons voulu caractériser les connaissances des parents d'enfants jumeaux sur ce risque majoré de trouble développemental du langage oral. Nous avons spécifiquement étudié le développement langagier des enfants jumeaux, puis nous nous sommes intéressés au rôle des professionnels de santé dans la transmission des informations aux parents. Nous avons pour cela, diffusé un questionnaire à destination des parents d'enfants jumeaux, âgés de 6 mois à 3 ans ; ce questionnaire avait pour but d'évaluer leurs connaissances. Nous avons ensuite diffusé un deuxième questionnaire à destination des professionnels de santé afin d'évaluer leurs connaissances sur le sujet ainsi que leurs pratiques utilisées pour évaluer le langage oral des enfants. Notre étude a mis en évidence une bonne connaissance parentale sur le développement langagier des enfants jumeaux mais les parents déplorent le manque d'informations qui leur ont été données quant aux difficultés inhérentes à la relation gémellaire. De plus, le sentiment de compétence parentale des parents est en lien avec la qualité et la quantité des échanges entre parents et enfants ; ce sentiment est bon chez les parents d'enfants jumeaux mais s'avère plus fragile que chez les parents d'enfants célibataires. Notre étude a mis en évidence l'importance de la guidance parentale et du partenariat parental afin que le dépistage ainsi que les prises en soin orthophoniques soient les plus précoces possibles.

Book excerpt: Although speech-language pathologists are expected to be able to administer and interpret oral examinations, there are currently no screening tests available that provide careful administration instructions and data for intra-examiner and inter-examiner reliability. The Oral Speech Mechanism Screening Examination (OSMSE) is designed primarily for use by clinical speech-language pathologists. The examination could also serve, however, as a useful tool for oral myofunctional therapists, as well as physical therapists, dentists, and orthodontists interested specifically in speech. It is reliable, relatively easy and quick to administer, and appropriate for children and adults in either diagnostic or therapy settings. The OSMSE is intended to assess those anatomical structures and physiological functions that are most often considered to be potentially related to speech or language disorders. Structural and/or functional judgments included are organized on the OSMSE test form under categories of: lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, hard palate, soft palate, pharynx, breathing, and diadochokinesis. Results of a preliminary study with normal speaking subjects indicated that the OSMSE had satisfactory intra- and inter-examiner reliability after minimal training. The time required to administer the examination typically ranged from 5 to 10 minutes. (Author/GK)

The protagonist, who shares the author’s name, Driss, comes from a Moroccan family of means, his father a self-made tea merchant, the most devout of Muslims, quick to be provoked and ready to lash out verbally or physically, continually bent on subduing his timid wife and many children to his iron and ever-righteous will. He is known, simply, as the Lord, and Driss, who is in high school, is in full revolt against both him and the French colonial authorities, for whom, as much as for his father, he is no one. Driss Chraïbi’s classic coming-of-age story is about colonialism, Islam, the subjection of women, and finding, as his novel does, a voice that is as cutting and coruscating as it is original and free.
