Because of the risk associated with progression from insulin resistance to diabetes and cardiovascular complications increases along a continuum, we included several chapters on the damage of endothelial cells in type 2 diabetes and genetic influences on endothelial cell dysfunction. Cardiovascular complications occur at a much lower glucose levels, thus a review on the oral glucose tolerance test compared to other methods was included. The medical conditions associated with type 2 diabetes such as pancreatic cancer, sarcopenia and sleep disordered breathing with diabetes were also discussed. The book concludes with several chapters on the treatments for this disease offering us hope in prevention and successful alleviation of the co-morbidities associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Book excerpt: Introduction : en France, la prévalence du diabète en 2016 était de 5%, dont 90% représentés par le diabète de type 2. Le diabète représente la première cause de cécité à 65 ans, de dialyse et d'amputation en France. Les complications cardiovasculaires sont la première cause de mortalité chez les patients diabétiques de type 2. Objectifs : évaluer les connaissances des patients diabétiques de type 2 à propos des complications du diabète. Les objectifs secondaires cherchaient à identifier un lien entre caractéristiques épidémiologiques et diabétologiques et niveau de connaissances des patients. Matériel et méthodes : étude descriptive quantitative réalisée grâce à des auto-questionnaires distribués dans les cabinets de médecine générale et au sein du service de l'hôpital de jour de l'hôpital de la Conception. Résultats : au total, 200 questionnaires ont été recueillis. Dans l'ensemble, les patients avaient un assez bon niveau de connaissances. 60% des patients savaient la définition de l'hémoglobine glyquée, 50% des patients n'avaient pas la notion que le diabète pouvait être responsable d'une impuissance. Pour 46% des patients, les complications du diabète sont inévitables. Notre étude a mis en évidence un lien entre ancienneté du diabète et niveau de connaissances. Ce dernier était également influencé par la catégorie socio-professionnelle. Enfin, les patients suivis uniquement par le médecin traitant avaient un niveau de connaissances plus faible que ceux suivis par l'endocrinologue. Conclusion : il semble nécessaire de développer l'éducation thérapeutique des patients en renforçant la formation des médecins généralistes, en valorisant cette pratique financièrement et en favorisant l'exercice coordonné multidisciplinaire.
