Book excerpt: A uniquely powerful marker of ethnic, gender, and class identities, scent can also overwhelm previously constructed boundaries and transform social-sensory realities within contexts of environmental degradation, pathogen outbreaks, and racial politics. This innovative multidisciplinary volume critically examines olfaction in Asian societies with the goal of unlocking its full potential as an analytical frame and lived phenomenon. Featuring contributions from international scholars with deep knowledge of the region, this volume conceptualizes Asia and its borders as a dynamic, transnationally connected space of olfactory exchange. Using examples such as trade along the Silk Road; the diffusion of dharmic religious traditions out of South Asia; the waves of invasion, colonization, and forced relocation that shaped the history of the continent; and other “sensory highways” of contact, the contributors break down essentializing olfactory tropes and reveal how scent functions as a category of social and moral boundary-marking and boundary-breaching within, between, and beyond Asian societies. Smell shapes individual, collective, and state-based memory, as well as discourses about heritage and power. As such, it suggests a pervasive and powerful intimacy that contributes to our understanding of the human condition, mobility, and interconnection. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume include Khoo Gaik Cheng, Jean Duruz, Qian Jia, Shivani Kapoor, Adam Liebman, Lorenzo Marinucci, Peter Romaskiewicz, Saki Tanada, Aubrey Tang, and Ruth E. Toulson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AND YOU THOUGHT IT WAS ALL OVER Roger Crutchley’s book The Long Winding Road to Nakhon Nowhere wasn’t the ‘end of the road’ for the author. After many years working at the Bangkok Post, even after retirement readers still look forward to his musings in the Sunday edition. His column makes them smile, laugh out loud or get angry and write letters to the editor. In his new book, Beyond Nowhere, Roger has come up with more amusing reflections of his five decades in Thailand and even his early years in England. In it he also recalls experiences in China, the Philippines, the Soviet Union and other countries he visited. Read about hilarious police raids, the orangutan who tried to board a Bangkok bus, the art of how not to bargain, the singing taxi driver and the Thai food that sparked a dramatic London police raid. Then there are the ghosts that struck terror in the Northeast, the day Sir Alec Guinness spoke fluent Thai and the infamous raid on a Pattaya bridge club. And of course there are terrific tales from where it all began, his fascinating experiences at the Bangkok Post dating back to 1969. (Includes color photographs)

Book Real Food Fake Food

Download or read book Real Food Fake Food written by Larry Olmsted and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Olmsted makes you insanely hungry and steaming mad--a must-read for anyone who cares deeply about the safety of our food and the welfare of our planet.” —Steven Raichlen, author of the Barbecue! Bible series “The world is full of delicious, lovingly crafted foods that embody the terrain, weather, and culture of their origins. Unfortunately, it’s also full of brazen impostors. In this entertaining and important book, Olmsted helps us fall in love with the real stuff and steer clear of the fraudsters.” —Kirk Kardashian, author of Milk Money: Cash, Cows, and the Death of the American Dairy Farm You’ve seen the headlines: Parmesan cheese made from wood pulp. Lobster rolls containing no lobster at all. Extra-virgin olive oil that isn’t. So many fake foods are in our supermarkets, our restaurants, and our kitchen cabinets that it’s hard to know what we’re eating anymore. In Real Food / Fake Food, award-winning journalist Larry Olmsted convinces us why real food matters and empowers consumers to make smarter choices. Olmsted brings readers into the unregulated food industry, revealing the shocking deception that extends from high-end foods like olive oil, wine, and Kobe beef to everyday staples such as coffee, honey, juice, and cheese. It’s a massive bait and switch in which counterfeiting is rampant and in which the consumer ultimately pays the price. But Olmsted does more than show us what foods to avoid. A bona fide gourmand, he travels to the sources of the real stuff to help us recognize what to look for, eat, and savor: genuine Parmigiano-Reggiano from Italy, fresh-caught grouper from Florida, authentic port from Portugal. Real foods that are grown, raised, produced, and prepared with care by masters of their craft. Part cautionary tale, part culinary crusade, Real Food / Fake Food is addictively readable, mouthwateringly enjoyable, and utterly relevant.

Book Taste of Macau

  • Author : Annabel Jackson
  • Publisher : Hong Kong University Press
  • Release : 2003-09-01

Download or read book Taste of Macau written by Annabel Jackson and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 450 years ago, the Portuguese landed in what was to be the first European colony in Asia, Macau, bringing their culture and their cuisine. This lavishly illustrated cookbook is the first to introduce to the English-speaking world one of the oldest ‘fusion’ cuisines in Asia. It includes 62 recipes, most of which are straight from the source — old family recipe collections or the files of influential Macanese chefs. This book comes at an important time — just after the handover in 1999 of Macau from Portuguese to Chinese rule — a time when most of the Portuguese community is leaving Macau and authentic Macanese culture and way of life seems doomed to rapidly disappear. Thus, this book is much more than a cookbook — it is a project to preserve and share, for the first time, a very important aspect of the Macanese world. The author has spent almost ten years collecting and testing these heritage recipes, getting in touch with the Macanese diaspora, and asking them to reflect back and write about food in Macau. Taste of Macau can be used as a complete reference guide to Macanese cuisine, as it includes information on ingredients and where to buy them, stories and information about the few remaining authentic restaurants in Macau, and a fascinating discussion on the relationship between food and culture through literary excerpts and personal testimonies from important figures in the Macanese community.
