Book excerpt: Turin: Italy's Most Underappreciated City When planning a trip to Italy, everyone always thinks of Rome, Venice, and Florence, of course. But, what if I told you there's a whole other side to Italy, beyond its crowded, tourist-filled metropolises, waiting to be discovered. One urban area that's been overlooked for far too long is Turin. Underappreciated Means Lower Prices and More Opportunity for You! I had the pleasure of spending over two years of my life in this magnificent Italian city, and consequently had plenty of opportunities to explore her narrow alleyways, well-known landmarks and discover secret spots. Turin, or Torino in Italian, is an excellent but under-explored Italian tourist destination that boasts clean, magnificent streets and provides an authentic feel for metropolitan Italian life. Plus, you'll never feel like you're elbow-to-elbow with other tourists as you may in Venice and parts of Rome. Shedding Its Industrial Reputation While Turin once had a reputation for being an industrial and gray city, there's much history and culture to be discovered - it was Italy's first capital, afterall, and recently hosted the Olympics in 2006. As you'll discover, Turin is a city full of color and vibrancy. From the picturesque cityscape dominated by the Mole, to the buzzing food scene (if you do make your way to Piemonte, your perception of pasta will be forever changed. A common dish in this region is pasta with butter - it may not be what you're used to, but believe me - it's a must-try!) and many cultural events that cater to its thriving student population. A Quick Connection From Milan, Genova and France While Turin may not have been on your Italian bucket list, it's my hope that after reading this guide, you make it a point to book a train ticket (only one-hour with Italo, and two hours by bus or the local commuter train from Milan and Genova) to see all that the "Paris of Italy" has to offer. Turin is truly a on-of-a-kind destination and has so much history, art and beauty hiding within her walls. In this Turin travel guide, you'll discover: Secret, Off-the-Radar Spots in Turin. Many of which are unknown to locals, Torinesi. You'll see a whole new side of Turin. Museums of All Types. Turin is a treasure trove of museums. From ancient to modern, there's an experience for everyone. Foodgasm-worthy Restaurants. Turin is renowned for its food scene, but some places are better than others. I've pointed out the top spot for you. Day Trips (All Reachable with Public Transport). Take advantage of Turin's strategic location. Explore the area with buses, trains and even BlaBla car. Beat the Crowds - Explore Turin While It Still Remains Secret! Enjoy your own unique Taste of Turin now while you still have the chance - this culturally rich, beautiful destination can't stay hidden forever. Whether spending a year or two for work or school, or passing through for just a few days or two, I hope I've given you plenty of interesting spots to transform your stay into Turin into one that's magical rather than ordinary. Download this ebook to enjoy an authentic Taste of Turin!

Download or read book Making Taste Public written by Carole Counihan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Taste Public takes an ethnographic approach to show how social relations shape - and are shaped by - the taste of food. Recognizing that different cultures have different taste preferences and flavour principles embedded in cuisine, editors Carole Counihan and Susanne Højlund ask how these differences are generated. The editors have compiled 14 chapters to show how specific influences become a part of our sensorial apparatus and identity through shared experiences of making, eating, and talking about food. Using case studies from Asia, Europe and America, the book presents a theory of how taste is made public through everyday practices. The authors are exploring how place, production methods and cooking techniques create tastes. They discuss the criteria determining good and bad tastes, and how tastes and memories evolve over time. Subjects such as how values can be embedded in taste, and the role of taste education in food movements, homes, and schools are explored. The different chapters examine definitions and mobilizations of taste in different institutions, public places, and regions around the world to reveal ethnographic understandings of how people learn, experience, and share taste. With contributions spanning the Solomon Islands, Denmark, Japan, Canada, France, the USA, and Italy, Making Taste Public is a fascinating account of how our sense of taste is continuously shaped and re-shaped in relation to social and cultural context, societal and environmental premises. The book will interest anyone studying anthropology, sociology, food studies, sensory studies and human geography.

Book Taste as Experience

  • Author : Nicola Perullo
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2016-04-05
  • ISBN : 0231541422
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book Taste as Experience written by Nicola Perullo and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taste as Experience puts the pleasure of food at the center of human experience. It shows how the sense of taste informs our preferences for and relationship to nature, pushes us toward ethical practices of consumption, and impresses upon us the importance of aesthetics. Eating is often dismissed as a necessary aspect of survival, and our personal enjoyment of food is considered a quirk. Nicola Perullo sees food as the only portion of the world we take in on a daily basis, constituting our first and most significant encounter with the earth. Perullo has long observed people's food practices and has listened to their food experiences. He draws on years of research to explain the complex meanings behind our food choices and the thinking that accompanies our gustatory actions. He also considers our indifference toward food as a force influencing us as much as engagement. For Perullo, taste is value and wisdom. It cannot be reduced to mere chemical or cultural factors but embodies the quality and quantity of our earthly experience.

Book Tasting Coffee

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kenneth Liberman
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2022-06-01
  • ISBN : 143848898X
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Tasting Coffee written by Kenneth Liberman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once ethnographic and phenomenological, Tasting Coffee investigates the global chain of coffee production "from seed to cup," stopping at every stage along the way to describe the tasting practices of each stakeholder purveying coffee. The ethnomethodological care of these descriptions derives from an attunement to just how these stakeholders discover and describe the flavors of coffee and how they convert subjective experience into objective knowledge. The methods and protocols of sensory science are also examined and assessed in their lived details, making this study also a contribution to the sociology of science. Based upon a decade of research in fourteen countries, author Kenneth Liberman provides a nonessentialist ontology of coffee, its history, and its production. The world of coffee becomes a microcosm in which many realities of postmodern humanity are exposed and clarified—with the thoughts of Edmund Husserl, Alfred Schutz, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Emmanuel Levinas, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jacques Derrida, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Aron Gurwitsch, and Harold Garfinkel—even as these naturally occurring case studies provide fresh specifications for these thinkers' ideas.

Book Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation

Download or read book Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation written by Josep M. Bayona and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 2998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation is a complete treatment of the theory and methodology of sampling in all physical phases and the theory of sample preparation for all major extraction techniques. It is the perfect starting point for researchers and students to design and implement their experiments and support those experiments with quality-reviewed background information. In its four volumes, fundamentals of sampling and sample preparation are reinforced through broad and detailed sections dealing with Biological and Medical, Environmental and Forensic, and Food and Beverage applications. The contributions are organized to reflect the way in which analytical chemists approach a problem. It is intended for a broad audience of analytical chemists, both educators and practitioners of the art and can assist in the preparation of courses as well in the selection of sampling and sample preparation techniques to address the challenges at hand. Above all, it is designed to be helpful in learning more about these topics, as well as to encourage an interest in sampling and sample preparation by outlining the present practice of the technology and by indicating research opportunities. Sampling and Sample preparation is a large and well-defined field in Analytical Chemistry, relevant for many application areas such as medicine, environmental science, biochemistry, pharmacology, geology, and food science. This work covers all these aspects and will be extremely useful to researchers and students, who can use it as a starting point to design and implement their experiments and for quality-reviewed background information There are limited resources that Educators can use to effectively teach the fundamental aspects of modern sample preparation technology. Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation addresses this need, but focuses on the common principles of new developments in extraction technologies rather than the differences between techniques thus facilitating a more thorough understanding Provides a complete overview of the field. Not only will help to save time, it will also help to make correct assessments and avoid costly mistakes in sampling in the process Sample and sample preparation are integral parts of the analytical process but are often less considered and sometimes even completely disregarded in the available literature. To fill this gap, leading scientists have contributed 130 chapters, organized in 4 volumes, covering all modern aspects of sampling and liquid, solid phase and membrane extractions, as well as the challenges associated with different types of matrices in relevant application areas

Book Tastes We Live By

Download or read book Tastes We Live By written by Marco Bagli and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taste is considered one of the lowest sensory modalities, and the most difficult to express in language. Recently, an increasing body of research in perception language and in Food Studies has been sparkling new interest and new perspectives on the importance of this sense. Merging anthropology, evolutionary physiology and philosophy, this book investigates the language of Taste in English, and its relationship with our embodied minds. In the first part of the book, the author explores the semantic dimensions of Taste terms with a usage-based approach. With the application of experimental protocols, Bagli enquires their possible organization in a radial network and calculates the Salience index of gustatory terms in both American and British English. The second part of the book is an overview of the metaphorical extensions that motivate the polysemy of Taste terms, with the aid of corpus analysis methods and various texts. This book is the first to review systematically and in a usage-based perspective the role of the sensory domain of Taste in English, showing a more complicated picture and suggesting that its under-representation and difficulty of encoding does not correspond to lack of importance.
