Book Blacks in Blackface

Download or read book Blacks in Blackface written by Henry T. Sampson and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 1573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1980, Blacks in Blackface was the first and most extensive book up to that time to deal exclusively with every aspect of all-African American musical comedies performed on the stage between 1900 and 1940. An invaluable resource for scholars and historians focused on African American culture, this new edition features significantly revised, expanded, and new material. In Blacks in Blackface: A Sourcebook on Early Black Musical Shows, Henry T. Sampson provides an unprecedented wealth of information on legitimate musical comedies, including show synopses, casts, songs, and production credits. Sampson also recounts the struggles of African American performers and producers to overcome the racial prejudice of white show owners, music publishers, theatre managers, and booking agents to achieve adequate financial compensation for their talents and managerial expertise. Black producers and artists competed with white managers who were producing all-Black shows and also with some white entertainers who were performing Black-developed music and dances, often in blackface. The chapters in this volume include: An overview of African American musical shows from the end of the Civil War through the golden years of the 1920s and ’30s New and expanded biographical sketches of performers Detailed information about the first producers and owners of Black minstrel and musical comedy shows Origins and backgrounds of several famous Black theatres Profiles of African American entrepreneurs and businessmen who provided financial resources to build and own many of the Black theatres where these shows were performed A chronicle of booking agencies and organized Black theatrical circuits, music publishing houses, and phonograph recording businesses Critical commentary from African American newspapers and show business publications More than 500 hundred rare photographs A comprehensive volume that covers all aspects of Black musical shows performed in theatres, nightclubs, circuses, and medicine shows, this edition of Blacks in Blackface can be used as a reference for serious scholars and researchers of Black show business in the United States before 1940. More than double the size of the previous edition, this useful resource will also appeal to the casual reader who is interested in learning more about early Black entertainment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid 1960s the city of Halifax decided to relocate the inhabitants of Africville--a black community that had been transformed by civil neglect, mismanagement, and poor planning into one of the worst city slums in Canadian history. Africville is a sociological account of the relocation that reveals how lack of resources and inadequate planning led to devastating consequences for Africville relocatees. Africville is a work of painstaking scholarship that reveals in detail the social injustice that marked both the life and the death of the community. It became a classic work in Canadian sociology after its original publication in 1974. The third edition contains new material that enriches the original analysis, updates the account, and highlights the continuing importance of Africville to black consciousness in Nova Scotia.

Book excerpt: THE REDEMPTION SERIES: 100 years after Margaret Anne transformed an American family, comes the profound 4-part finale to the Calhoun saga. BOOK THREE: Reckoning Sacrifice birthed the unsettled world of Margaret Anne. Now, only surrender can pave the way for closure. As Matthew’s harrowing and highly anticipated journey to deliver the Spanish Cross into the hands of his estranged son reaches its climactic conclusion, the one who has been ordained to fulfill the ancient promise of the often maligned and unjustly persecuted Miss Margaret Anne Basseterre is revealed. Reckoning portrays the troubled life of Matthew’s son, David Michaeal Sonneman. From his tragic and destitute beginnings, which are sparingly revealed in Angel Ascending, the story of David’s life, including the true nature of his trials and tribulations and his sacred mission, is brought into focus in this scintillating and thought provoking third book of the Redemption Series. When David ultimately discovers that his earthly salvation from that darkened basement in Baltimore was something far different than what he had always supposed, he is forced to reconsider his lifelong desire to avenge those wrongs that were served upon him, at least those wrongs that he understood as a young child. He must decide between his developing faith, which accompanies his hope for a better tomorrow, and those deeply entrenched desires to put an end to those responsible for the worst of his childhood afflictions when the true story of his life is made known to him. “Reckoning” is the fascinating continuation of the Redemption series, uncovering the next intricate layer to the Margaret Anne saga of fate, faith, reckoning, and mercy.
