Book Folk Literati Contested Tradition and Heritage in Contemporary China

Download or read book Folk Literati Contested Tradition and Heritage in Contemporary China written by Ziying You and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important ethnography Ziying You explores the role of the "folk literati" in negotiating, defining, and maintaining local cultural heritage. Expanding on the idea of the elite literati—a widely studied pre-modern Chinese social group, influential in cultural production—the folk literati are defined as those who are skilled in classical Chinese, knowledgeable about local traditions, and capable of representing them in writing. The folk literati work to maintain cultural continuity, a concept that is expressed locally through the vernacular phrase: "incense is kept burning." You's research focuses on a few small villages in Hongtong County, Shanxi Province in contemporary China. Through a careful synthesis of oral interviews, participant observation, and textual analysis, You presents the important role the folk literati play in reproducing local traditions and continuing stigmatized beliefs in a community context. She demonstrates how eight folk literati have reconstructed, shifted, and negotiated local worship traditions around the ancient sage-Kings Yao and Shun as well as Ehuang and Nüying, Yao's two daughters and Shun's two wives. You highlights how these individuals' conflictive relationships have shaped and reflected different local beliefs, myths, legends, and history in the course of tradition preservation. She concludes her study by placing these local traditions in the broader context of Chinese cultural policy and UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage program, documenting how national and international discourses impact actual traditions, and the conversations about them, on the ground.

Book Between Regulation and Freedom

Download or read book Between Regulation and Freedom written by Andrea Caracausi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected essays which together re-frame the roles of guilds in medieval and early modern European cities. They focus on the different ways in which we can understand the interfaces between regulatory frameworks, represented by guild and civic regulations, and the wider world of labour and production. Through case studies of single cities, economic sectors, and of territories, they address a range of questions about the operation of labour markets, the nature of guild regulation within and outside guild jurisdictions, and the interaction between ‘regulation’ and ‘freedom’ as expressed in legislation and in the organization of production and distribution. In doing so, they offer a means to compare and contrast experiences across Europe and the circumstances which determined and altered economic structures and, in turn, political and social structures in cities.

Book Oral Traditions and the Verbal Arts

Download or read book Oral Traditions and the Verbal Arts written by Ruth Finnegan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of oral traditions and verbal arts leads into an area of human culture to which anthropologists are increasingly turning their attention. Oral Traditions and the Verbal Arts provides up-to-date guidance on how to approach the study of oral form and their performances, treating both the practicalities of fieldwork and the methods by which oral texts and performances can be observed, collected or analysed. It also relates to those current controversies about the nature of performance and of 'text'. Designed as a practical and systematic introduction to the processes and problems of researching in this area, this is an invaluable guide for students, and lecturers of anthropology and cultural studies and also for general readers who are interested in enjoying oral literature for its own sake.

Book Heritage Cuisines

Download or read book Heritage Cuisines written by Dallen J. Timothy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food is one of the most fundamental elements of culture and a significant marker of regional and ethnic identity. It encompasses many other elements of cultural heritage beyond the physical ingredients required for its production. These include folklore, religion, language, familial bonds, social structures, environmental determinism, celebrations and ceremonies, landscapes, culinary routes, smells, and tastes, to name but a few. However, despite all that is known about foodways and cuisine from hospitality, gastronomical, supply chain and agricultural perspectives, there still remains a dearth of consolidated research on the wide diversity of food and its heritage attributes and contexts. This edited volume aims to fill this void by consolidating into a single volume what is known about cuisines and foodways from a heritage perspective and to examine and challenge the existing paradigms, concepts and practices related to gastronomic practices, intergenerational traditions, sustainable agriculture, indigenous rituals, immigrant stories and many more heritage elements as they pertain to comestible cuisines and practices. The book takes a global and thematic approach in examining heritage cuisines from a wide range of perspectives, including agriculture, hunting and gathering, migration, ethnic identity and place, nationalism, sustainability, colonialism, food diversity, religion, place making, festivals, and contemporary movements and trends. All chapters are rich in empirical examples but steady and sound in conceptual depth. This book offers new insight and understanding of the heritage implications of cuisines and foodways. The multidisciplinary nature of the content will appeal to a broad academic audience in the fields of tourism, gastronomy, geography, cultural studies, anthropology and sociology.
