While away in Europe fighting for England, Tarzan is unaware of the evil descending upon his plantation in British East Africa. When he returns, it is too late. German colonial forces have ransacked and destroyed his entire home, leaving nothing but disaster behind. In the wreckage, Tarzan finds the charred, blackened corpse of his beloved wife Jane. Consumed with grief and thoughts of vengeance, he sets out to wage a bloody guerilla war against all Germans troops that stand in his way on his path to ultimate revenge on German officer Captain Fritz Schneider. Will Tarzan succeed through harsh desert and wasteland with the help of his untraditional army of gorillas and lions? Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American author, best known for his book series about Tarzan, an English infant abandoned in the African jungle and brought up by apes. The first novel, "Tarzan of the Apes", was published in 1914 and was succeeded by a total of 24 books about the ape-man. The Tarzan stories have been translated into more than 56 languages and gained popularity in both film, television and radio. During World War II, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Burroughs, aged 66, became one of the oldest U.S war correspondents to cover the South Pacific theatre.

In this new episode, Tarzan has given up his jungle ways and is living contentedly on a farm with his beloved wife Jane, as a wealthy member of British nobility. But when he returns one day from a trip to Nairobi, he finds his farm has been laid to waste by German troops, with no one left alive. In grief and rage, he casts off the veneer of civilization to become once again the primitive ape-man, ranging the country in search of those who killers his mate to mete out to them the vengeance of the jungle. Never has master storyteller Edgar Rice Burroughs so skillfully shown the struggles within the breast of his ape-man hero, who through dozens of adventures and hair-breadth escapes, tracks down his enemies and triumphs in a crashing, action-packed climax.

Book State of Failure

Download or read book State of Failure written by Jonathan Schanzer and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biggest obstacle to Palestinian statehood may not be Israel In September 2011, president Mahmoud Abbas stood before the United Nations General Assembly and dramatically announced his intention to achieve recognition of Palestinian statehood. The United States roundly opposed the move then, but two years later, Washington revived dreams for Palestinian statehood through bilateral diplomacy with Israel. But are the Palestinians prepared for the next step? In State of Failure, Middle East expert Jonathan Schanzer argues that the reasons behind Palestine's inertia are far more complex than we realize. Despite broad international support, Palestinian independence is stalling because of internal mismanagement, not necessarily because of Israeli intransigence. Drawing on exclusive sources, the author shows how the PLO under Yasser Arafat was ill prepared for the task of statebuilding. Arafat's successor, Mahmoud Abbas, used President George W. Bush's support to catapult himself into the presidency. But the aging leader, now four years past the end of his elected term, has not only failed to implement much needed reforms but huge sums of international aid continue to be squandered, and the Palestinian people stand to lose everything as a result. Supporters of Palestine and Israel alike will find Schanzer's narrative compelling at this critical juncture in Middle Eastern politics.

Book excerpt: An extraordinarily haunting novel of identity and remembrance, love and forgiveness. Emet Conn is an old man on the verge of senility, a feisty World War 1 veteran who suffered amnesia during the war. Now at the end of his life, he suddenly finds himself beset by vivid dreams of a march across a foreign land, of appalling acts of cruelty, and the anguish of a lost love. But these are no dreams and he is no prisoner. As the memories come flooding back and his grasp on the past and present begins to break down, he sets out on one final journey to find the love of his life and beg her forgiveness. With a multi-layered plot and deft characterisation, Mustian explores how love can transcend nationalities and politics, how racism creates divisions where none truly exist, and how the human spirit fights to survive even in the face of hopelessness.
