Book Classical Masterpieces for Banjo

Download or read book Classical Masterpieces for Banjo written by Claudio Parravicini and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’ve ever felt compelled to play Flight of the Bumblebee on the 5-string banjo, this is the book for you! Challenging banjo transcriptions of classical masterpieces may seem like a humorous anachronism to some, but not for Italian master Claudio Parravicini, a conservatory graduate who, while majoring in French horn, always believed that the banjo was “a virtuoso instrument capable of enriching any musical genre.” In the author’s words, “I chose the classical pieces in this book on the basis of how they might advance right and left-hand banjo technique and even refine the player’s musical sensibility… Some pieces, like Flight of the Bumblebee will challenge your ability to play rapidly, while others like Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, are much slower, but will test your musical abilities in other ways.” The other pieces in the book are: Prelude No. 2 in C minor and Inventions No. 4 and No. 6 by J. S. Bach, Flight of the Bumblebee by Korsakov, Perpetual Motion and Carnival of Venice by Paganini, and Toccata for Piano or Harpsichord by Paradisi. Classical Masterpieces for Banjo is written in tablature only in standard G tuning [gDGBD] using three- finger banjo technique in the traditional, melodic and single-string style. Each selection is guaranteed to further your technique and delight your audience, or simply expand your vision of what is possible on the 5-string banjo.

Book The Banjoist s Budget

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rob MacKillop
  • Publisher : Mel Bay Publications
  • Release : 2020-10-21
  • ISBN : 1513455729
  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book The Banjoist s Budget written by Rob MacKillop and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the 50 late 19th century tunes in Albert Baur’s 1883 anthology, The Banjoist’s Budget. The collection has roots in four main sources: minstrel songs, Irish popular and folk traditions, clog dancing tunes, and Gilbert and Sullivan favorites- all expertly played by Rob MacKillop on the accompanying online audio recording. The music is clearly typeset in standard notation and tablature for the 5-string banjo in Baur’s original eAEG#B tuning; observing the tablature, however, this music can be played in modern-day concert C tuning, gCGBD. While Baur provided no technique instructions, the music can be played in the old minstrel stroke technique, the modern melodic clawhammer style, or fingerstyle. By contrast, MacKillop provides ample performance notes and a few tips within the notation. These melodies constitute an authentic audio window to a past century, when the five-string banjo was a classical instrument studied and played by serious students and expert musicians who read standard notation rather than tablature. In any case, here they are in notation and modern banjo tablature, together with a delightful online recording. Includes access to online audio.

Book The Banjo on Record

    Book Details:
  • Author : Uli Heier
  • Publisher : Greenwood
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 670 pages

Download or read book The Banjo on Record written by Uli Heier and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1993 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appeal of the banjo has been shown to be timeless and universal---adaptable to almost any form of popular music. It was one of just a few instruments that could be faithfully reproduced in the early days of sound recording, and its recording history dates back to 1889. Heier documents that history on cylinders and 78-rpm disks in the pre-LP era ending in the mid-1950s. The book offers a comprehensive compilation of all such recordings on which the banjo plays a solo role or dominant part. Organized by performer or performing group, the recordings are listed chronologically with location, date, matrix number, and take-digit as available, as well as manufacturer and catalog number. Biographical information on the banjoist is provided wherever possible, and all performers anywhere in the world known to have recorded any type of music on banjo are included even if no data on the actual disks is available. Introduced in a foreword by British discographer Brian Rust, the discography also includes a narrative account of the banjo in phonograph recording history by Lowell Schreyer and an essay on the history of the banjo itself by Robert Lloyd Webb. In addition to the discography proper, the editors have provided a preface, A Quick Look at the Banjo Family, identifying the instruments; an extensive bibliography of sources; an index of all tune titles; and reproductions of 92 recording labels. These elements all combine to make this volume a true discopedia of the banjo.

Book Banjo Method

  • Author : Frank Bradbury
  • Publisher : Mel Bay Publications
  • Release : 2010-10-07

  • Pages : 129 pages

Download or read book Banjo Method written by Frank Bradbury and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written for those with no prior musical experience, is the definitive text for learning C-tuning concert, or classic-style 5-string banjo. Written by the late Frank Bradbury, Banjo Method provides a thorough grounding in music theory and note reading, along with a complete presentation of Mr. Bradbury's unique 5-string concert banjo technique and outstanding solo and duet arrangements by various artists. the technique described here is radically different from that found in other books about the 5-string banjo, and no tablature is used. No plastic or metal picks are used on the right-hand fingers, nor are the fingernails used, but rather the bare fingertips. the hand positions recommended by Mr. Bradbury are not unlike those of a classical guitarist. All in all, this is an uncommon, but valid approach to solo banjo technique. Online audio of select pieces and exercises featuring Rob MacKillop now available.
